OUR AI FUTURE: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Writing stories. Chatting with customers. Creating illustrations. It seems like computers powered by artificial intelligence are doing everything these days. Cartoonist Rick McKee even turned to A.I. to help him create a cartoon critical of the creeping abilities of computers. https://wp.me/p4wCIX-2Kwu

Other popular cartoons this week touched on the continued high cost of food, turmoil in the banking industry, and an awkward moment when a conservative pundit couldn’t define the term “woke.”

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#2. Dick Wright

Tucker Carlson Cartoons

You can learn more about this cool Ed Wexler, Tucker Carlson cartoon and thirty more on our new Caglecast podcast!

Watch the video! We’ve got cartoons about tanned testicles, Swanson TV dinners, Tucker’s lies from the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit discovery, snuggling up to Putin and denying the violence at the January 6th insurrection –we’ve got a Cartoon Tuckerfest!

Cartoons are a great insight into the news, distilling complex issues into images. We have the best cartoonists to explain what’s behind the cartoons, giving their witty insights on the Fox News and Tucker, who we now know were lying the whole time. This is a great Caglecast –don’t miss it!

Our three great cartoonist guests on the video podcast are:

GARY McCOY, who draws two newspaper comics strips, The Flying McCoys and the Duplex in addition to drawing editorial cartoons for our CagleCartoons.com syndicate and lots of other stuff. ED WEXLER, who is a brilliant caricaturist who worked for 30 years as a creative director at Disney. For 12 years he was a regular cartoonist for US News & World Report magazine. Ed is known for his caricature cover art for The Hollywood Reporter’s Academy Awards and Emmy Awards issues also for 12 years. And ADAM ZYGLIS, who is the Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist for The Buffalo News in New York.

The discussion turns into an argument with our conservative cartoonist friend, Gary, about whether the January 6th insurrection was even an insurrection at all, or just a pleasant day for tourists in Washington. We also have a close examination of Tucker’s testicles and Tucker’s relationship with Vladimir Putin.

Support Monte Wolverton – Don’t Lose Liberal Cartoons in the Public Debate

We’ve put up a crowd funding campaign for our beloved and brilliant, progressive cartoonist, Monte Wolverton at Cagle.com/Wolverton –come take a look!

The problem we have is that, with the continuing decline of newspapers, we’ve reached a point where many editorial cartoonists, like Monte, simply can’t afford to keep drawing for the pittance that newspapers pay. I hate seeing our profession slowly die, and I would hate to see Monte leave the public debate.

So we’re putting up a crowd funding campaign and hoping that support from fans can keep Monte in the game. Our Cagle.com Heroes have been very generous in keeping Cagle.com operating, perhaps editorial cartoon fans would want to support keeping one of their favorite cartoonists drawing.

Here’s Monte’s message to his fans on Cagle.com.

I did a Caglecast podcast with Monte showing some of his recent work and talking about his famous, cartoonist father, Basil Wolverton. See the video below!

See Monte’s archive and read our pitch for your support. We think Monte has an important voice and we really appreciate your support for Monte.

It was really a mixed bag for editors this week, as our most popular cartoons featured a number of different topics, ranging from artificial intelligence to President Biden’s lackluster support.

Our most popular cartoon this week was an exercise-related gag by Jeff Koterba, riffing off studies that show walking just 11 minutes a day is beneficial to your health. It’s probably best to avoid the drive thru, though.

Conservatives Gary McCoy and Rivers – Drawing Amongst Liberals

On this week’s Caglecast we’re joined by two of our most conservative cartoonists, Gary McCoy who also draws two comic strips, “The Duplex” and “The Flying McCoys”; and Rivers, who draws anonymously and joins us with a disguise and an altered voice.

The vast majority of editorial cartoonists are liberal so the few, conservative cartoonists stand out as unusual, and often stand alone voicing ideas that seldom find their way into general circulation newspapers; Gary and Rivers are among the best among the few conservative cartoonists, and they talk about living in a world of liberal editors which includes their liberal editor who is hosting the podcast, me, Daryl Cagle.

Gary and Rivers show lots of their favorite cartoons, they enjoy denigrating Dr. Anthony Fauci; they deny the efficacy of COVID vaccines; they complain about the ignorance of liberals who watch MSNBC; they let us know that we wouldn’t have this war in Ukraine now if Trump was in office; they tell us about how the insurrection wasn’t an insurrection at all, and how most of the MAGA folks on January 6th were out for a peaceful stroll.

We could have titled this “Cartoons from the Bizarro Dimension.”  …but we love Gary and Rivers. Really, we do.  Here are a few of the images that are discussed in the video.

HOT AND COLD –TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

It was an interesting week, as no single news story (outside of “Dilbert” being dropped by its syndicate) seemed to dominate the headlines. As a result, this week’s most reprinted cartoons span across multiple topics and ideas.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Jeff Koterba

#2. Rick McKee

#3. Dave Granlund

The First Syndicated Political Cartoon Drawn by Artificial Intelligence

Rick McKee, who “created” the first syndicated political cartoon, drawn by artificial intelligence, has amassed an impressive collection of art he made through A.I. and he shares the images with us and talks about how it all works and the threat A.I. poses to to illustrators and editorial cartoonists. In case you were listening to the audio podcast and missed the art, these are the images we discussed on our podcast, Episode 6, and watch the video below!

Just want to listen? Try the audio version below:

Here are Rick’s A.I. created images that he talks about on the podcast:

The Top Ten Cartoons of the Week –Bagley and Matson

What a difference an hour makes. Our Top Ten cartoons of the week changes from minute to minute as editors make new picks, and cartoons drop off when they get to be a week old –so it happened this week when I grabbed the Top Ten cartoons for our podcast earlier than my editor, Rob Tornoe, grabbed them for this column, and RJ Matson’s then #1 Social Security cartoon (that you can see in last week’s post at #8) dropped off of the list.

No matter, all the cartoons are great, and you can see a lot of great conversation about editorial cartoons, newspapers, and our crazy, troubled profession from our brilliant CagleCartoonists, Pat Bagley and RJ Matson.

With the news former President Jimmy Carter has been placed on hospice care, Dave Granlund tribute to the former peanut farmer and Navy veteran turned commander-in-chief was easily this week’s most popular cartoon among editors.

Otherwise, it was a mixed bag as far as topics go. Cartoons about inflation, the Ohio train derailment, and the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were all popular with editors this week. I particularly liked Pat Bagley‘s riff on Little Red Riding Hood, facing a dark forest of social media sites.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Granlund

#2. Jeff Koterba

#3. Pat Bagley

#4. Jeff Koterba

#5. Rick McKee

#6. Adam Zyglis

#7. R.J. Matson

#8. John Darkow

#9. Rivers

#10. Dave Granlund

Chinese Spy Balloon -Top Ten Cartoons

Check out our new Caglecast, Top Ten podcast — it is brand new and we haven’t gotten it set up on the podcast platforms yet, so this is a sneak peek. Or watch the video:

This week, it was all about balloons.

The Chinese spy balloon shot down by the U.S. after floating across the country was the perfect metaphor for cartoonists. So it’s no surprise that balloon cartoons made up a majority of our most-reprinted toons this week.

Editors also reprinted a lot of cartoons about President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech, where he went back and forth with disapproving Republicans in real time. It’s been a wild week.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Whamond

#2. Jeff Koterba

#3. John Darkow

#4. Guy Parsons
