LIV IT UP: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

LIV Golf’s surprise merger with the PGA Tour continues to shock the sports world. Dave Whamond’s cartoon about new partnership – forged with Saudi money – was our most reprinted cartoon this week.

Other cartoons popular with editors this week riffed on a number of news topics ranging from orange skies in the Northeast to the pressure on teachers.

DEBT DEAL: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

After months of brinksmanship, House Republicans and President Joe Biden came together raise the debt ceiling and avert an economic calamity. Republicans got some of the cuts they wanted, Biden kept most of his economic policies intact, and editors got a flood of debt ceiling cartoons.

The bad news? Cartoonists will be back drawing more debt ceiling cartoons in 2025… unless we’re all replaced by AI.

MEMORIAL DAY: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

Dave Granlund’s simple, poignant Memorial Day cartoon was our most-reprinted cartoon this week, as we had into a weekend of remembrance and barbecues.

Editors also liked several of our cartoons on the looming debt ceiling crisis, as lawmakers leave Washington, D.C. to enjoy their holiday weekend without a resolution in place. Nice work if you can get it.

A.I. INSANITY: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

You can barely open a newspaper or flip through an article on your phone without reading about the growth of artificial intelligence.

Cartoonists are watching the images created by A.I. systems – fed with a catalogue of artists’ work – with a wary eye. Maybe if we feed these computers enough cartoons critical of their creeping abilities, maybe it’ll teach them not to take all our jobs.

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! TOP 10 CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

The dreaded rub of holiday cartoons – editors love them, and cartoonists hate to draw them. But it’s undeniable that Mother’s Day cartoons were popular with editors this week, as our two most-reprinted cartoons were celebrations of mothers everywhere.

Editors also ran cartoons covering a smorgasbord of topics, ranging from federal charges against Rep. George Santos to Vladimir Putin’s paltry “one-tank” military parade.

BIDEN’S AGE: Top Ten Cartoons!

The drumbeat about President Joe Biden’s age continued to bang this week, with critics pointing to the fact he’ll be 82 on inauguration day if re-elected. Editor’s are certainly interested, with many of our most-reprinted cartoons this week revolving around the nation’s oldest president.

Editors were also interested in cartoons about the writers’ strike in Hollywood and the potential for a debt ceiling debacle, as Republicans appear ready to take us to the brink of default.
