Holiday Season – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Last week the Christmas spiritinvaded the cartoon world, with Santa and his elves predictably dominating our most-popular toons this week.

Gary McCoy topped out list with his cartoon about a father asking Santa for a peaceful world, which any parent can relate to. Chris Weyant also drew a popular cartoon along similar lines.

There were some pokes and prods as well. Dave Granlund draw a funny cartoon featuring politicians running to an airplane leaving Washington, D.C., the only time you see them hurrying to do anything. And I enjoyed Randall Enos’ jab at the release of the Epstein Files, with two guys at the bar having a redacted conversation.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Gary McCoy

#2. Jeff Koterba

A.I. Anxieties: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

This week, critics pounced on Time magazine for naming the architects of artificial intelligence its person (people?) of the year.

Our most-reprinted cartoon of the week, drawn by Dave Whamond, mocks the cover as something A.I. itself would come up with. Jeff Koterba also contributed to the anti-robot vibe with a funny cartoon about life with an A.I. chatbot.

Elsewhere on our top ten list, John Darkow drew a popular cartoon about Republicans not extending ObamaCare tax credits before leaving town and heading home for the holidays. Must be nice to have stable, inexpensive congressional healthcare watching over them.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Whamond

#2. Jeff Koterba

Shutdown Drags On: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

The government shutdown grinds forward, with no end in sight and no deal on the horizon to bring together Republicans and Democrats. In other words, it’s a mess, which isn’t exactly new for Washington.

Gary McCoy’s shutdown cartoon, featuring a student complaining about schools not being closed, was our most-reprinted cartoon this week. Bruce Plante’s boxing-themed cartoon – with both Republicans and Democrats bruised and battered – was also popular among editors.

I laughed at Pat Byrnes’ funny cartoon about Republicans and Democrats finally finding something to agree on – the full release of the Epstein files. Now if they can only find something to agree on to reopen the government.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Gary McCoy

#2. Bruce Plante

I recently went to Italy for the World Humor Awards exhibition and awards. I made new friends and had a great time, so I made a podcast discussing all the winning cartoons with our new, Italian Cagle Cartoonist Marco de Angelis and ISCA (the caricaturist organization) president, Robin Schwartzman, who were jurors for the exhibition and great cartoonists.  Come look!#3. John Cole

#4. Dave Granlund

#5. Bob Englehart

#7. Pat Byrnes

Tariff time: Top ten cartoons of the week

Trump’s tariffs are back on, with dozens of key trading partners being slapped this week with so-called “reciprocal” tariffs Trump may or may not walk back.

I liked John Darkow’s cartoon, which mixed the furor of tariffs with wildfire smoke from Canada clouding our economic future. John Koterba also had a funny tariff cartoon involving a mom rushing to buy back to school supplies before prices go up.

But our most popular cartoon of the week, drawn by Chris Weyant, tackled the looming presence of AI by quoting philosopher René Descartes. I recall he also had another famous line about doubt being the origin of wisdom, something all these tech cheerleaders seem to be lacking.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

#2. John Darkow

Summer and AI: Top ten cartoons of the week

While it’s never really quiet with Trump in office, the summer does provide some relief from the relentless pace of news.

Without politics in the forefront, two topics dominated our list of the most-reprinted cartoons this week – the continued expansion of AI and the overwhelming heat.

I enjoyed John Darkow’s popular cartoon about AI, which featured classic robots from Lost in Space and The Twilight Zone. John’s funny cartoon about the scorching temperatures also topped our list, focused on a man who asked about the heat one too many times.

But our most-reprinted cartoon of the week by far, drawn by Dave Granlund, focused on the increasing cost of health care in the U.S. Can’t we get AI to fix that?

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Granlund

#2. John Darkow

DEBATE DREAD: Top Ten Cartoons

Our list of the most-reprinted cartoons was a real smorgasbord this week, with topics ranging from the increasing role of artificial intelligence to the collapse of Red Lobster. I particularly enjoyed Bob Englehart’s cartoon about the tough needle cartoonists need to thread these days to make it onto the opinion page.

Editors loved Chris Weyant’s cartoon about next month’s presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Though I don’t think CNN will be promoting it as “The Geezer vs. The Sleazer.”

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

Angry A.I. Celebrities!

We have a great new Caglecast (video podcast) with our brilliant CagleCartoonist, Rick McKee, who created a bunch of angry celebrities with Artificial Intelligence. Take a look!  It is funny.

And it is disturbing, because A.I. is generating stuff that is good, and it threatens witty, talented people in fields from editorial cartooning to the writers who are on strike in Hollywood.

Just for now, it makes me laugh to see people who we have never seen get angry, getting very angry.  Here are some examples.  And watch the video where we discuss all things A..I. with Rick, and later with Rivers and Andy Singer.

Abraham Lincoln usually has no expression at all.

And Mr. Rogers –it would take a lot to make him angry.

We never saw Stan Lee angry, but maybe we weren’t looking hard enough.

Lots of folks were mad at Jimmy Carter, but we never saw him get mad back at us –even when we got a ticket for driving over 55 on the freeway.

Watch the Caglecast, and like and SUBSCRIBE on YouTube –or visit our archives and watch on Caglecast.com.

TRUMP IN TROUBLE: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

Donald Trump was indicted this week on federal charges linked to his handling of classified documents, a first for a former U.S. president. Naturally, the news became a launching platform for cartoonists to weigh in on a number of related topics, including Republican whataboutism and Trump’s difficulty finding new lawyers.

We also had a lot of great cartoons this week about artificial intelligence, including a funny one by Jeff Koterba that was extremely popular with editors.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Jeff Koterba

#2. Dick Wright

A.I. INSANITY: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

You can barely open a newspaper or flip through an article on your phone without reading about the growth of artificial intelligence.

Cartoonists are watching the images created by A.I. systems – fed with a catalogue of artists’ work – with a wary eye. Maybe if we feed these computers enough cartoons critical of their creeping abilities, maybe it’ll teach them not to take all our jobs.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

#2. John Darkow

OUR AI FUTURE: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Writing stories. Chatting with customers. Creating illustrations. It seems like computers powered by artificial intelligence are doing everything these days. Cartoonist Rick McKee even turned to A.I. to help him create a cartoon critical of the creeping abilities of computers. https://wp.me/p4wCIX-2Kwu

Other popular cartoons this week touched on the continued high cost of food, turmoil in the banking industry, and an awkward moment when a conservative pundit couldn’t define the term “woke.”
