SALUTE THE TROOPS: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

If there’s one truth about cartooning, it’s that editors and readers love holiday cartoons, but most cartoonists hate drawing them.

This week was no exception. Cartoons celebrating Veterans Day dominated out list of the most-reprinted cartoons this week. Congratulations to Dave Granlund, who had four cartoons on this week’s top ten list, including the first three.

Two of Granlund’s most-reprinted cartoons were focused on Veterans Day, while the third touched on reports that credit card debt in the U.S. has exceeded $1 trillion for the first time, a fact most readers (and cartoonists) can relate to.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – November 13th, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  November 13th, 2021.  Chris Weyant had the most reprinted cartoon of the week, which appeared in about 118 newspapers.

Kudos to Jeff Koterba who has three cartoons in the Top Ten! And congratulations to Dave Whamond who was our most reprinted cartoonist again this week, overall.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – November 14, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (November 7th through November 14th 2020). This week the editors flocked to the same cartoons, as usual, with the few, most popular cartoons far outpacing the rest.

This week’s #1 cartoon by Jeff Koterba is the second most reprinted editorial cartoon of the year, and it may yet overtake Dave Granlund’s #1 cartoon of the year so far, from three weeks ago. The #2 cartoon by Dave Whamond would have been a strong #1 in a typical week where the usage curve wasn’t quite so steep.

Dave Whamond and Dave Granlund both impress with two cartoons each on the Top Ten. Hearty congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week, Dave Fitzsimmons, Pat Byrnes, Monte Wolverton, Randy Enos and Gary McCoy. 

The most popular topic this week was Alex Trebek. Only two cartoons referencing the pandemic made the Top Ten list.  Cartoonists drew scores of cartoons about Trump’s refusal to accept the election results this week, but only three were popular with editors who ignored most of these cartoons.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Veterans Day Cartoons to Give a Patriotic Glow to Even the Dimmest Editor

I run a syndicate, Caglecartoons.com, that distributes political cartoons to newspapers, and every year at this time we hear from editors complaining that there are few or no Veterans Day cartoons.

Some editors think of editorial cartoons as nothing more than little, topical jokes — this is troubling to political cartoonists who want to draw cartoons about solemn topics and bring a tear to the reader’s eye.

Unfortunately, editors for some of the biggest, most influential publications treat editorial cartoons as trivial jokes; a good example is Newsweek magazine, which likes to reprint cartoons that are like Jay Leno jokes, about a topic in the news but conveying no opinion that anyone would disagree with. Jay Leno jokes about the news all the time, and I have no idea what his personal opinions are.

Another wretched publication that diminishes editorial cartoons is The New York Times, which prints a weekly round-up of insipid cartoons under the title “Laugh Lines.” Don’t expect to see any thoughtful Veterans Day cartoons under the title “Laugh Lines.”

So, if a cartoonist wants to get his cartoons reprinted in The New York Times, Newsweek or some other big, national publication that likes funny, trivial jokes, he won’t be drawing any Veterans Day cartoons.

I have gathered a batch of some of my favorite Veterans Day cartoons from cartoonists who don’t care what New York Times and Newsweek editors think. These cartoons will bring a patriotic glow to even the dimmest editor as the cartoonists express their appreciation to our veterans.
