Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 15, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 8th through August 15th, 2020). As usual, cartoonists drew president Trump in many cartoons, but no drawings of Trump were among the most popular with newspaper editors.

Dave Granlund is on top this week with the #1 and #6 cartoons! Dave Whamond also has an impressive showing with two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Kudos to the other six CagleCartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week: John Darkow, Rick McKee, Ed Wexler, Randy Enos, Jeff Koterba and Chris Weyant!

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

#1

Congratulations to Dave Granlund who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week, the first of two cartoons in the Top Ten!

#2

Chris Weyant takes second place with one of the early Kamala Harris cartoons that editors were looking for.

#3

Jeff Koterba, who is on vacation, takes 3rd place with this cartoon that he drew and submitted in advance.

#4

Congratulations to John Darkow who snags 4th place.

#5

Dave Whamond claims 4th place with his first of two cartoons in the Top Ten this week.

#6

Congratulations yet again to Dave Granlund  for his second of two cartoons in the Top Ten. This was the first, new Kamala Harris cartoon posted after see selection as Biden’s VP nominee, something that editors were eager to see.

#6

Kudos to Ed Wexler who is tied for #6 with his first “couple watching TV” cartoon. I warned Ed that “couples watching TV” cartoons are addictive and may consume him (as happened to me).

#8

I’m happy to see my buddy Randy Enos on the Top Ten this week!

#9

Dave Whamond takes the #9 spot with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#10

Rick McKee and Vladimir Putin take the ten spot!

Can’t Get Away From Coronavirus

We had cartoons about nothing but the coronavirus for months and this week the cartoons abruptly changed to the George Floyd protests. Today I went back to the coronavirus with a silly cartoon that expresses no opinion, like newspaper editors prefer.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do the editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

I drew a sad couple at the TV yesterday. A goofy TV couple is more typical for me. This nice gag came from a comment on my wife’s Facebook page, so, thanks to whoever wrote that.

Even with the protests, some cartoonists managed to sneak the coronavirus in. Here are five nice ones from our Cagle Cartoonists …

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – April 18, 2020

Rick McKee

Dave Granlund

Cagle.com needs your support!
I’d like to urge all of our fans to contribute to Cagle.com at this difficult time. We don’t run advertising in our newsletters or on Cagle.com  –we depend on our readers for support. Now our small business (CagleCartoons.com) and the editorial cartooning profession as a whole, are facing possible extinction as our newspaper clients are suddenly failing. Newspapers are simply not paying their bills as their advertisers have been shut down during the pandemic. Please take a look at our Cagle.com/Heroes page, take a look at my video below, and consider making a contribution. If enough fans make a small, monthly contribution, we can save Cagle.com and keep our cartoonists drawing, at a time when the cartoons are more important than ever. We need you.

Please visit Cagle.com/Heroes and be a Cagle.com Hero!

Here are the rest of the top ten most popular cartoons from last week! Steve Sack has THREE cartoons in the top ten this week!

Jeff Koterba has TWO cartoons in the top ten this week.

Dave Granlund, who had a cartoon that tied for most popular of the week (above), has a SECOND cartoon in the top ten.

This popular cartoon is by John Cole.

This popular cartoon by John Darkow rounds out the top ten.

Tomorrow we’ll have part two of the BLAME CHINA cartoons (see Blame China! Part One in case you missed it), and then we’ll have a new remembrance by my cartoonist buddy, the legendary Randy Enos.

Thanks everyone – we love you all and appreciate your support!

Corona Virus Quarantine Blues in China

UPDATED March 6, 2020, with a new cartoon – scroll to the bottom of the post to see it, along with another explanation from Benedick.

I got some interesting emails from Chinese cartoonist and freelance photographer, Benedick Bowen, with some cartoons about his experiences with China’s extreme quarantine measures to restrict the spread of the Corona Virus, COVID-19.

At first, Chinese authorities tried to downplay the threat and punished a few whistleblowers who sounded the alarm –we had the same experience his with Preisdent Trump’s comments minimizing the virus threat. Benedick writes:

“… I heard about the ‘unexplained virus’ was was told it could be controlled and not contracted from human to human, many times on the the Chinese domestic media.

When I heard the news, I heard many people were rushing to buy face masks and medical alcohol and food. Some pessimistic friends thought that the material supply shortage would keep long and may wreak famine. My father asked me to buy rice, wheat flour and oil for months use. I didn’t agree with them … but I did buy much more food than before.

Finally Beijing was quarantined. People were not allowed to go on the street at will. Employees have to ask their companies to write out a “testimony” to get a pass for an employee to leave his home for work.  I am not an employee so I can not leave my house.  I can only go out within 3 hours per day to buy food.  My son’s kindergarten delayed the opening time few times.  By now we have bought 60 kilograms rice and 50 kilograms wheat flour and many bottles of oil. “

Benedick has been suffering from the quarantine, and from not being able to ply his trade as a freelance photographer while he’s stuck in his house, because he has no employer to write a note to the authorities, he is stuck at home. (We might face Corona Virus quarantines in California too, where freelance photographers are banned under the new law AB 5, so there will be no employer excuses in the USA either.)

Here are more of Benedick’s cartoons …

UPDATED March 6, 2020
Benedick writes: “This cartoon is about the quarantine in China’s rural areas. The security guards who wear red armbands supervise the people to wear face masks and stay home. The security guards have no enforcement power so they always make violence when people don’t obey them.”

Chris Christie and “The Walking Dead”

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has been eager to be the “take action guy” with Ebola. He sometimes gets the facts wrong, accusing a nurse of having ebola symptoms when she didn’t have ebola symptoms – and that’s great for me; as a cartoonist, I gotta love Chris Christie.

I get requests to show my rough pencil sketches – here’s the sketch for this one …

Christie600wideSketch

I draw these on tab sized paper, 11×17. I almost had Christie with multi-hand-motion-chip-eating-action, but that was too complicated. Simple is better.

It is rare that I draw governors; most readers don’t know the governors of other states, let along their own states. Christy stands above the other governors as a great character. Here he is bouncing back from this “bridge-gate” scandal.

The guy is fun.  Here’s Christie on running for president – I’d like to see him run.

For a while, Christie’s “Bridge-gate” traffic-jam scandal looked like it would sink Christie and I drew this umbrella cartoon.

I need to keep drawing this guy.
