Top Cartoons! Russia and Embryos as Children

Another week, another mixed bag of news topics that found their way onto the drawing boards of the nation’s top cartoonists.

Several of our most-reprinted cartoons this week centered on Russia, which included former Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s widely-mocked softball interview with Vladimir Putin. There was also a vague warning of a Russian space super weapon that caught the attention of a couple of cartoonists.

This week’s most popular cartoon was Dave Granlund’s riff on a court in Alabama ruling that frozen embryos are children. While the ruling has been highly controversial, impacting doctors, hospitals, and families trying to have a child, Granlund chose to focus on a family attempting to claim tax credits for the “kids” they have in the lab.

WAR AND CHAOS – TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

A week ago, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing more than 1,200 Israelis and igniting a new conflict in a region long torn by war and bloodshed. Meanwhile, back here in the U.S., Republicans remain unable to elect a Speaker of the House, which could impact our country’s ability to aid Israel, among other things.

All that to say it was a busy week for cartoonists, who also targeted their pens on the over-inflated price of housing and President Joe Biden’s sudden change of heart on Trump’s border wall.

Pumpkin Spice – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

It’s the middle of September, or as it’s become known across the U.S. – pumpkin spice season.

That’s when everything from coffee to Oreos to scented candles roll out pumpkin spice-flavored versions of their favorite products. At the top of the list is the Pumpkin Spice Latte, which turns 20 this year after being introduced by Starbucks in 2003.

Computer Drivers: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

With all the talk of automation and A.I., it’s funny to think that driverless cars have been zipping around San Francisco for the last few years.

Last week, the California Public Utilities Commission voted to give the two companies who run the automated cars permission to offer rides throughout San Francisco anytime during the day.

That doesn’t mean the technology is perfect. Just this week, an autonomous vehicles drove into wet cement at a city paving project, making Dave Whamond’s cartoon about driverless cars and traffic lights oddly prophetic.

The Top Ten Week I Missed! So Hot!

Here’s the Top Ten of the week that I was away at the San Diego Comic Con.

It’s always hot in the summer, but this year nature has taken things up a notch. Cities across the country are breaking their own heat records. Not surprisingly, a good amount of our most-reprinted cartoons this week focused on the weather, and when we might get some relief from his latest heat wave.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 31, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 24th, through October 31st, 2020). Newspaper editors flocked to the same, few cartoons and most of the cartoons got little or no exposure. Cartoons mentioning Trump or Biden were unpopular with editors again this week.

Editors’ collective preference for a handful of cartoons was never clearer to see as the #1 and #2 cartoons this week were also the #1 and #2 cartoons of the year, since we started keeping comparative usage statistics last January. Congratulations to Dave Granlund for his runaway #1 cartoon and to Dave Whamond for his #2 of the week and year.

Special congratulations to John Darkow who has two cartoons in the Top Ten this week, and kudos to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons: Gary McCoy, Jeff Koterba, Chris Weyant, Pat Bagley, Bob Englehart and Dave Fitzsimmons.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 8, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 1st through August 8th, 2020). For the first time since March, a drawing of Trump has made the Top Ten in John Darkow’s #8 cartoon showing Trump as a dog biting a postman. Trump’s attacks on the Post Office are a very popular topic right now (but usually without showing Trump). Seven of the Top Ten cartoons reference the pandemic, two are about the Post Office, and one is about Joe Biden.

Jeff Koterba dominates the week with three cartoons in the Top Ten, taking the #1, #4 and #6 spots! Steve Sack has an impressive showing with #2 and #3.

Kudos to our other five cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week: RJ Matson, Dave Whamond, John Darkow, Rick McKee and Kevin Siers!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – May 30, 2020

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (May 23 -May 30).

The stats this week were unusual. The beginning of the week followed a familiar pattern of editors choosing light cartoons about the mature coronavirus story, with my own, light virus cartoon from last Sunday claiming the week’s top spot. Later in the week the news turned to Trump’s Twitter distraction and the murder of George Floyd. Few cartoons stood out in the stats this week as usage was flattened among a larger number of topics. The international cartoonists were virtually shut out and not reprinted at all. There is a disconnect between what cartoonists want to draw, what editors want to print and what readers want to see; this week that divide was plain to see as cartoons that were popular on social media were ignored by editors.

Congratulations to Nate Beeler for coming in at #2, and Kudos to Randy Enos who makes his first appearance in the Top Ten at #3. Hearty congrats to the rest of the artists with cartoons that were the most reprinted in newspapers this week: Steve Sack, Adam Zyglis, Dave Whamond, Bruce Plante, Jeff Koterba, John Cole and Bob Englehart.

Our top ten is a measure of how many of our subscribing newspaper editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. 20% of the cartoonists get 80% of the sales and reprints, and most of the cartoonists never make it into the Top Ten.
