Trump and the Swamp

Donald Trump promised to “drain the swamp” in Washington, implying that he would be bringing new faces into the administration that were not “politics as usual.” So far, Trump’s picks look like standard politicians Republican fare, straight from the swamp.

Swamp
I love the look of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Swamp Thing? Not so much.

There have also been reports about Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, nixing choices that are close to New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie, who put Kushner’s father in jail back when Christie was a prosecutor.

I was thinking of the typical swamp cabinet candidate and I thought of the “Swamp Thing” – but when I looked, I realized that what I really had in mind was the “Creature from the Black Lagoon” which has a classic 1950’s B-movie look. The Swamp Thing just didn’t make the cut. That’s the Creature from the Black Lagoon in the photo at the right. And my cartoon is below.

I think the cartoonists will find their Trump-sea-legs soon. If not, we’re in for four (or eight) years of lousy Trump-Monster cartoons – that is, Trump as the monster, which has grown tiresome. One bright spot is Jared Kushner and Trump’s kids, who look like they will be cartoon characters on my palette in coming years. They are wonderful characters!

Mike Pence in Trump’s Shadow

There is a great tradition of drawing politicians as doggies in political cartoons. Last night the new Republican VP nominee, Mike Pence, gave his acceptance speech at the GOP convention, and here is the cartoon I drew yesterday. trumpPence750

See me draw this one in real time in the video below …

And see me color this one in Photoshop, in real time. I suggest you choose the option to watch these YouTube videos at double speed.

My brilliant cartoonist buddy. Taylor Jones, has been drawing some nice Pence doggies. Here are three I enjoyed!

Here Taylor has Pence as a little doggie. I’m not quite sure why Trump is drooling, or why Eric Trump is goose-stepping, but, whatever.

182112_600That’s Taylor’s Ivanka and puppy Pence at the right. Maybe little Pence doggies will be the political cartooning norm going forward. I look forward to that.

North Carolina Bathroom Bill Lawsuit

As ugly as the North Carolina Bathroom bill is, I welcome the departure from Trump/Hillary cartoons. I worried a bit that showing the Statue of Liberty’s butt would be too rude for editors to stomach, but there is something about her being entirely green that seems to make her statuesque butt not seem to stand out as quite so rude. I know editors don’t like bare butts, and cartoons with butts don’t get printed much – still, as a cartoonist it is my responsibility to draw bare butts when the news compels me to do so. Here’s today’s cartoon …

You can watch me draw this one in real time in the video below. There were thunderstorms in Nashville that played havoc with my Twitch feed, so I wasn’t getting many comments from fans and I didn’t have much to say. Perhaps this is a good one to watch at double speed with no sound.

The next YouTube video shows me coloring the cartoon in Photoshop …

Who is to Blame for Flint’s Poisoned Water?

I enjoyed drawing this Flint Michigan cartoon on Twitch. Take a look at the video below where I explain about the cartoon and answer plenty of questions.

Who is to blame? The Republican, Rick Snyder administration in Michigan wants to shift the blame to the EPA and Obama administration, and it looks like the EPA fell plenty short on this one, but I lay the blame on the Michigan governor and the lousy, unelected administrator he appointed to make all of the bad decisions in Flint.

Sit back and spend the afternoon watching me draw this in real time in the videos below!

And here’s part two …

Marco Rubio Bites his Mentor in the Bush Butt

Florida Senator Marco Rubio announced that he is in the presidential race a couple of days ago. He’ll be running against his old mentor, Jeb Bush, so, here is Marco as a doggie, biting Bush in the butt.

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that almost everyone running for president this time around is really easy to draw. A couple are duds, Scott Walker and Martin O’Malley have lousy faces, but hopefully I won’t need to draw them.

I like the line art better, and I send it out to newspapers as the black and white version, but I’ve notices that papers are more often printing a grayscale version of the color cartoon. Frustrating. Editors like the tone and color, even though simple lines are more elegant.

“Gotcha” Questions for Scott Walker

I get lots of e-mails with the same message, like this one from little Johnny in Nashville, who writes, “Dear Mr. Cagle, Please explain your cartoon to me. My paper is due tomorrow.”

I hate having to explain myself. So does Wisconsin Governor, Scott Walker.

Walker doesn’t like “gotcha” questions from the media. When a reporter asks a politician a question, and knows that an honest answer would be an answer that many people won’t like hearing, that is a “gotcha” question. Walker has been clumsy while learning to avoid “gotcha” questions.

I drew a cartoon showing a reporter interviewing Walker.

Reporter asks, “Gays?”

Walker says, “I don’t wanna answer that.” Walker thinks, “Homos are so nasty.”

Reporter then asks, “Evolution?”

Walker says, “I won’t answer.” Walker thinks, “This liberal ape doesn’t know that evolution is only a ‘theory’.”

Reporter asks, “Do you think Obama is a Christian?”

Walker says, “I never asked him.” Walker thinks, “I never asked that liberal, Muslim, Kenyan atheist.”

Journalists must be accurate and report the exact words a politician says. My job is better. As an editorial cartoonist, I have the freedom to put any words into the mouths of politicians that I want; I can even choose to put any thoughts into their brains.

Republican candidates must pander to the basest of their conservative base, especially in the presidential primaries. My worry is that politicians really believe the blather that they spew. I would like to hear honest answers to the “gotcha” questions.

The problem with avoiding “gotcha” questions is that I’m left with the impression that Walker really believes the knuckle-dragging nonsense that I write into his thought bubbles.

An even bigger problem is that cartoons are not so funny when they are explained.

Sorry, Johnny.
