Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 24, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 17th, through October 24th, 2020). As usual, drawings of President Trump were not popular with newspaper editors, but a tiny Trump sneaked into the Top Ten in John Cole‘s #4 debate cartoon.  Again this week the Top Ten cartoons dominated newspaper reprints as less popular cartoons got little or no ink and editors flocked to the same cartoons.

Dave Whamond had a fantastic week with three cartoons in the Top Ten – Dave’s #1 cartoon was a hit that ranks in the top five of the year.  John Cole also had an impressive week with two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Congratulations to the other CagleCartoonists with Top Ten cartoons this week: Gary McCoy,  John Darkow,  Jeff Koterba, Randy Enos and Chris Weyant.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 3, 2020

Correction 10/14/20: I have to apologize for making an error in the Top Ten for this week, and it was a big error. John Darkow actually had both the #1 and #2 cartoons of the week, and both by a large margin – those darn stats! I have added the missing top cartoon as a second #1 cartoon, with a special congratulations to John for the incredible feat of capping the list with two mega-popular cartoons!

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (September 23rd through October 3rd, 2020). The news about President Trump contracting COVID generated a lot of cartoons on Friday, but none of them made the Top Ten. There was a lot of criticism of Trump’s overly aggressive debate performance, but not in the cartoons that editors chose to publish about the debate.

Congratulations to John Darkow for his #1 cartoon that outpaced the pack by a wide margin this week. Dave Granlund also had a great week with two cartoons on the list. Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba continued their long streaks of Top Ten appearances. We had an unusual three way tie for ninth place so there are eleven cartoons on the list this week.

Kudos to the other cartoonists who made our list of the cartoons most published in newspapers this week, Steve Sack, Rick McKee, Gary McCoy, Randy Enos – and me.

Debate Favorites

Here’s my cartoon about the crazy presidential debate …

We have a great collection of cartoons about the debate on Cagle.com.  Most of the cartoons are bashing Trump for his bulling performance, but a number of cartoons surprised me by taking an even handed approach. Here’s one from Mexican cartoonist Dario Castillejos.

 

Here’s another debate cartoon that  manages not to bash Trump, by Peter Kuper. Editors like cartoons about everyday folks reacting to the topics of the day, and editors like cartoons that avoid bashing Trump, so I’m guessing that this one will be popular.

 

Here’s one by Austrian cartoonist Petar Pismetrovic that puts Trump and Biden on equal footing.

 

Here’s Pat Bagley with a rare, even handed cartoon.

 

Here’s a similar, even handed cartoon from Jeff Koterba, who is usually even handed.

 

This rare, even handed cartoon comes from conservative cartoonist Gary McCoy.

Who would have thought that this crazy debate would lead to even handed cartoons?

Republican Frontrunners Tongue-Tied

I was inspired by the latest Republican debate to draw this nasty cartoon, with Trump, Cruz and Rubio tongue-tied, although it looks like Rubio was the most tongue tied.

Donald Trump Skips the Fox News/GOP/Iowa Debate!

Frankly, I think it is smart of Trump to skip the Fox News/GOP/Iowa debate tonight.  Fox News seems to be on an all-out anti-Trump blitz today. What happened to the good old days when news networks were fair and balanced?

I drew this one as a live stream on Twitch – please come and follow me at Twitch.tv/darylcagle. This one took about four hours to draw, so it is broken into two parts. Here’s part one, where I start with a blank sheet of paper and figure out what to draw.

Carly Fiorina – Look at my face!

This is my first Carly Fiorina cartoon. It looks like I may be doing more over the next year. She’s actually pretty easy to draw, with her eyes that tip up at the edges of her face, the long nose, pointy chin and skinny neck. It is fascinating to me how objectively bad her business record was, and still she runs on her business record as her qualification to be president. When she launches into a moralistic screed it makes my skin crawl – I think she is my least favorite Republican, but this cartoon goes easy on her.

Of-course, the cartoon refers to her spat with Trump about her “face” – as long as people look at her face – or look at anything but her record, she’s on her way up in the polls.

This Fiorina cartoon by David Fitzsimmons is my favorite. It conveys some information, something I usually try to avoid doing in cartoons (it takes too many words), but it works here …

In the Trump Shadow

Donald Trump casts a big shadow over the Republican field as we approach the first debate. I drew little caricatures of all the candidates – can you name them all? (I would have missed Jim Gilmore – he declared late and I stuck him behind the crowd, behind Ben Carson, as an afterthought.)

I started off drawing this one with Donald Trump as a storm cloud raining on the other Republicans.

When I posted this we started getting calls from editors who wanted a color version, and I haven’t done that yet. I suppose I still should, but I think the shadow version is better.

I’m guessing that the Fox News debate will be either storm or shadow, with Trump on top. We’ll see.

Cartoon Yahtzee: Empty Debate Chairs

Ever since Clint Eastward wandered onto the stage of the Republican National Convention with an empty chair, cartoonists have co-opted the visual imagery as a tool in their election cartoons. So it comes as no surprise that after last week’s Presidential debate, the empty chair would rear it’s ugly head again to represent President Obama, this time as an aloof participant in a debate performance with his challenger, Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

So when five or more cartoonists draw the same gag, we refer to it as a “Cartoon Yahtzee,” and as always, there is a basic rule of thumb to go by: if one other guy drew it, he’s a plagiarist; if five other guys drew it, they’re hacks; if a dozen other guys drew it, they are honoring a tradition.

Cartoonists Weigh In On The First Presidential Debate

Viewers turning in to see a firey, zinger-filled debate were treated to an event columnist Peter Funt said “was such bad television that many Americans, including the prized “undecided voters,” probably gave up and changed the channel.”

One of the most talked-about nuggets to come out of the debate was Romney’s renewed call to cut funding to PBS, despite the fact it only accounts for 0.012 percent of the budget (check out all our Defunding PBS cartoons). Here’s the cartoon I drew at the time Republicans proposed defunding PBS as a way to help balance the budget:
