Here are the editorial cartoons that editors chose to print in the past week! Congratulations to Dave Whamond for drawing the most popular cartoon; and to Jeff Koterba for having three cartoons in the Top Ten; and to John Darkow for having two cartoons in the Top Ten!
Smoke from Canadian wildfires one again drifted across the border this week, impacting air quality from Chicago to Philadelphia. John Darkow’s cartoon summing up all the weather-related dread Americans have faced this summer was our most popular cartoon among editors.
Darkow also drew the second-most reprinted cartoon, which commented on the terrible math scores among kids following COVID lockdowns.

Artificial intelligence once again seemed to dominate the news this week, as Congress considers regulations on the rapidly-evolving technology that can write stories, draw cartoons, and will eventually put us all out of work.
Other topics that were popular among editors this week include climate change, U.S.-China relations, and Hunter Biden.
Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of last week (Thursday to Thursday):
This is our second video podcast on Putin cartoons –Putin is a great topic because the cartoonists have all drawn so many brilliant Putin cartoons. And don’t miss our Putin Cartoons podcast, Part One (below) –collect them all!
Donald Trump was indicted this week on federal charges linked to his handling of classified documents, a first for a former U.S. president. Naturally, the news became a launching platform for cartoonists to weigh in on a number of related topics, including Republican whataboutism and Trump’s difficulty finding new lawyers.
We also had a lot of great cartoons this week about artificial intelligence, including a funny one by Jeff Koterba that was extremely popular with editors.

We have a great new Caglecast video podcast with four great Putin-bashing cartoonists: Rick McKee and Bill Day from Florida; Emad Hajjaj from Amman, Jordan; and Vladimir Kazanevsky, Ukraine’s best known cartoonist who is living now as a refugee in Slovakia. This Caglecast is a must-see!
Our new Caglecast about Justice Clarence Thomas includes a deep cartoon dive into Clarence’s wife, Ginni Thomas. Here are some of the cartoons that the cartoonists discuss on the podcast. Here is the video and please subscribe to our Caglecast onYouTube.

Ethics issues swirl around Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas –and great editorial cartoons swirl around him too! On our latest Caglecast we discuss cartoons about Clarence Thomas and his sketchy ethics! Here is the video and please subscribe to our Caglecast onYouTube.
We have a great new Caglecast about Justice Clarence Thomas with FOUR great CagleCartoonists: RJ Matson, Taylor Jones, Monte Wolverton and Ed Wexler!
The first cartoon (at the top), and this one are by John Darkow. On the podcast we have in in-depth discussion about Justice Thomas’ outie belly button.
The next three are by RJ Matson, who talks about each of these on our Caglecast podcast. The cartoon below is a rough sketch that RJ submitted to his editor and it was rejected. I think it would have been a great cartoon! It made me laugh out loud.
What a difference an hour makes. Our Top Ten cartoons of the week changes from minute to minute as editors make new picks, and cartoons drop off when they get to be a week old –so it happened this week when I grabbed the Top Ten cartoons for our podcast earlier than my editor, Rob Tornoe, grabbed them for this column, and RJ Matson’s then #1 Social Security cartoon (that you can see in last week’s post at #8) dropped off of the list.
No matter, all the cartoons are great, and you can see a lot of great conversation about editorial cartoons, newspapers, and our crazy, troubled profession from our brilliant CagleCartoonists, Pat Bagley and RJ Matson.
With the news former President Jimmy Carter has been placed on hospice care, Dave Granlund tribute to the former peanut farmer and Navy veteran turned commander-in-chief was easily this week’s most popular cartoon among editors.
Otherwise, it was a mixed bag as far as topics go. Cartoons about inflation, the Ohio train derailment, and the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine were all popular with editors this week. I particularly liked Pat Bagley‘s riff on Little Red Riding Hood, facing a dark forest of social media sites.

Jeff Koterba’s “Big Lie Bat Cave” cartoon in the Donkeys and Elephants exhibition at the Salon in St Just le Martel, France
We had two lovely exhibitions at the “International Center“, Press Cartoons museum in St Just le Martel, France this year. One of the shows was about Donkeys and Elephants.
Some people talk about cartooning being an international language, but it isn’t, a great example of cartoons that don’t cross borders are American donkey and elephant cartoons, which make no sense to foreign audiences. Our exhibit in France was curated by cartoons historian Olivier Auvray, who invited six cartoonists in our group to show their best donkey/elephant cartoons, which were presented with explanations –even with the explanations, the cartoons seemed seemed pretty difficult for the French fans to comprehend.
Here’s a video that Olivier took, of our cartoonist, Jeff Koterba, explaining his GOP Elephant Batcave cartoon to some French fans at the exhibition.
Our weekly Top Ten is now a newspaper column! Subscribing editors can find it at CagleCartoons.com with download links to grab the cartoons in high resolution.
