Top Ten Cartoons of the Year!

Happy New Year! Here are our Top Ten most reprinted cartoons of the year. All of these cartoons were reprinted in over 200 newspapers, and they give us an insight into what editors want most as they continue to shy away from cartoons that depict partisan politics that readers might disagree with –there is nothing to disagree with here; no donkeys and elephants, no congress, no Supreme Court, nothing on Russia’s war on Ukraine, nothing about international issues at all.

Also, it is noteworthy that some cartoonists excel in giving editors what they want: Congratulations to Chris Weyant who has the #1 and #2 cartoon; Dave Granlund has three cartoons on the list; Jeff Koterba has two and our anonymous cartoonist, Rivers, also has two on the list. This is interesting because these cartoonists also draw many hard hitting cartoons that take strong positions that readers could disagree with.  For most cartoonists, who want to bludgeon readers with their strong opinions, the editors’ choices are frustrating – that said, these are all great cartoons.

A Mixed Bag – Top Ten Cartoons

This week, editors chose a mixed bag of topics for their op-ed pages, everything from NASA’s moon mission to Brittney Griner’s release to Kyrsten Sinema leaving the Democratic Party.

Yet despite everything going on in the news, this week’s most-reprinted cartoon was about a universal subject everyone hates – high gas prices. Though not enough to go out and buy electric cars, apparently.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Whamond

#2. Jeff Koterba

#3. Rivers

Christmas Crunch – Top Ten of the Week

It’s the most wonderful time of year, until you check out the price of gifts for Christmas.

Inflation might be slowing down, but prices are still high and a number of our most popular cartoons this week touched on the expensive costs of gifts this holiday season.

Another popular subject was former President Donald Trump suggesting we rip up the Constitution and redo the 2020 election. I’d go into the reasons he cited, but they’re just as fictional as Santa himself.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

With the midterms over, all eyes are on the 2024 election, which as of now will feature a rematch between current President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump. Rick McKee’s cartoon about political leftovers was hit with editors this week, nailing the sweet spot between Thanksgiving and topical.

Inflation continues to be a popular topic for cartoonists. At least gas prices have started to drop.

Twitter Trouble: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

There’s been a lot of talk about people being disengaged from politics this election cycle, and this week’s most popular cartoons seems to back that up.

Despite midterm elections that saw Republicans struggle and Donald Trump put himself back into the spotlight, editors seemed more interested in Elon Musk and the chaos he’s created at Twitter. Between the issues at Twitter and layoffs at Amazon, it wasn’t the best week for some of the world’s top tech giants.

I also enjoyed Dave Whamond’s cartoon about a changing of the guard at Starbucks, from pumpkin spike lattes to eggnog lattes, which is probably a lot more relevant to people than how large the Republican majority will be in the House.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

ELECTION’S END: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

You might have heard; there was an election this week. While there is a good deal that remains uncertain (Georgia’s Senate race won’t be settled until next month), one thing that seems universal is our exhaustion over election ads and petty bickering from candidates.

Fortunately, we can all now safely turn on our TVs and not be afraid of eerie music playing behind black and white images of craven politicians attacking one another. We’ll just have to wait a bit longer for those lawn signs to be removed.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Election Burnout: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

If you haven’t noticed by all the political attack ads on television, it’s nearly Election Day! In just a couple of days Americans will be heading down to their local polling place to cast that vote in the 2022 midterms.

Elections are always a long slog for both voters and cartoonists, who just feel fatigued by the whole thing at this point. But at least they give us plenty to draw about.

Midterms Approach: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

We’re a little more than a week out from Election Day, and inflation remains one of the biggest issues of the midterms. Everything just seems to keep getting more and more expensive.

Of course, the election itself is a great topic for cartoons. Election deniers, unfit candidates, polarization – unfortunately there’s a lot of material for cartoonists to work with.

Top Ten Cartoons!

Happy Halloween! As we creep closer to the spookiest day of the year, it’s not surprising a chunk of this week’s most-reprinted cartoons were riffs off the holiday.
