Ed Wexler Explains his Cartoon at our Exhibition

Read on to see a video of our cartoonist, Ed Wexler, explaining his “All Votes Must be Counted” cartoon to some French fans at the exhibition.

We had two lovely exhibitions at the “International Center“, Press Cartoons museum in St Just le Martel, France this year. One of the shows was about Donkeys and Elephants.

American donkey and elephant cartoons make no sense to foreign audiences. Our exhibit in France was curated by cartoons historian Olivier Auvray, who invited six cartoonists in our group to show their best donkey/elephant cartoons, which were presented with explanations –even with the explanations, the cartoons seemed seemed pretty difficult for the French fans to comprehend.

Here’s Ed.

See CagleCartoonist Jeff Koterba explaining his cartoon at the exhibition in France.

Peter Kuper INterSECTs on May 25th

Our CagleCartoonist Peter Kuper, sends me this announcement of a cool event, in New York City and online, about his fantastic “insects in the library” exhibition “INterSECTS”. I wrote about this exhibition when it first started back in January. I encourage everyone to join Peter online. And enjoy Peter’s new masterpieces below.

Having spent a lifetime fascinated by flying, crawling creatures and nearly a year working inside the New York Public Library as a 2020-21 Cullman Fellow, I not only had the opportunity to explore my grant subject– the history of insects– but also the remarkable building itself.

I’m (insanely) working towards a 200+ page graphic novel INterSECTS  that will take me years, but in the meantime had the great fortune to be given an exhibition in the library’s Stokes Gallery that includes excerpts of this project and my earlier graphic novel Ruins. I’ll also be bugging out with some experts on the subject, May 25th.”

The event will be streaming (and later on YouTube, so people don’t have to be in NYC to attend) Inspired by The New York Public Library’s current exhibition INterSECTS, curator and cartoonist Peter Kuper gathers his friends from the insect world to bring the exhibition to life for a special one-night-only  with visual presentations and talks at the 42nd Street Library, May 25th 6:30-7:30 EST

Koterba COVID Exhibit

My CagleCartoonist pal, Jeff Koterba, just put together a cool exhibition of his cartoons about the pandemic.  Here’s some pix as Jeff tells us about the show …

From Jeff Koterba:

“When art imitates…art.

Recently I drew a cartoon inspired by my own exhibit of cartoons. On display at Pottawattamie Arts, Culture and Entertainment in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  The exhibit consists of nearly 100 cartoons specifically about the pandemic (as far as I can tell, it’s the first cartoon exhibit on Covid in the world). Some are funny, while others are poingant and even inspirational—that’s my hope, anyway! The cartoons are displayed in concentric circles—in the manner of a European maze and take you on a timeline, from the start of the pandemic until today. Along the way viewers can not only see how my approach to drawing about Covid evolved but also how I made the switch to drawing digitally during those early days of lockdown.

As we were putting the finishing touches on the exhibit, an idea came to me that I should draw a cartoon about covid as a maze—in concentric circles. After I drew it, we printed it up and added it to the exhibit…
Now I can’t imagine the exhibit without it. Sort of a full circle kind of thing, you might say.   —Jeff Koterba

Want to see all of Jeff’s COVID cartoons? They are here. Take a look. I went to our PoliticalCartoons.com store, searched for Jeff Koterba and COVID, and all the cartoons popped up – more cool to see it in the round in Iowa, though.

Where Arthropods and Homo Sapiens Meet

Our brilliant CagleCartoonist, Peter Kuper, has a great exhibition that is up now at the New York Public Library in Manhattan.  Here are some images and comments from Peter …

Here are some comments from Peter:

INterSECTS is a combination of my two passions —comics and insects (actually I have more passions than those, but these are two big ones).

I got a fellowship at the New York public library last year, and since it landed in the middle of Covid the library was completely closed to the public. That inspired me to use the empty space as a backdrop and populate it with the insects I was drawing as I studied their history and where they intersected with humans. This exhibition transpired rather suddenly after my fellowship ended. They needed some kind of exhibition in the space, but with the pandemic didn’t know what they could pull off and my work happen to fit perfectly. Installing the show has been like threading a needle during this pandemic but now it’s up and will be for the next 7 months.

Some images from the show …

Congratulations, Peter. Great fun.

My Exhibition in Belgium

I’ll be having an exhibition of my work in Ville de Virton, Belgium. If you’ll be around – come and meet me! The exhibition opening is May 18th at 6:30pm at the Caves de l’Hotel de Ville de Virton.

I’m a guest of the excellent Festival International de la Caricature de la BD du Dessin de Press et d’Humour in Rouvroy-Virton Belgium, near Luxembourg, May 19, 20 and 21. I’ll be sitting around doing drawings for folks and I’ll probably give a couple of lectures. This festival is organized by France-Cartoons, the association of French cartoonists that I got to know from the editorial cartoonists Salon in St Just le Martel, so it is my old buddies I travel to hang with. It is cool, and it looks like they have a Trump theme this year! heir poster is funny.
