No Jail for Zehra! Our Cartoonist from Turkey is Acquitted!

Our CagleCartoonist from Turkey, Zehra Ömeroglu, was just acquitted! Zehra has been on trial for “obscenity” in Turkey, facing a possible sentence of three years in prison; she fled to Germany while the trial continued in her absence. You can see Zehra’s cartoons and bio on Cagle.com here: https://cagle.com/zehra

See Zehra tell her story and show her cartoon that got her arrested at 4:09 in the video below.
Also on the podcast are CagleCartoonist Emad Hajjaj, who was jailed in Jordan for a cartoon, and now lives in Virginia, along with Terry Anderson from CartoonistsRights.org.

This podcast is called “Jailed Cartoonists and the Cartoons that put them in JAIL.” I’ll do a followup podcast with Zehra soon and she’ll tell us about her last few months, about how she’s doing after the acquittal, and she’ll tell us about the new graphic novel she’s working on, about her five years on trial, threatened with years in prison in Turkey.  Scary stuff!

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

TRUE Stupid Stuff 2!

Here’s another new batch of my old TRUE cartoons from the 1990’s – at least the ones that look like they could still be true. This is from a batch about government.

New Suit for Manafort

Paul Manafort has lots of fancy, $15,000 suits from the House of Bijan, which seems to be the most expensive men’s clothing store around. Customers shop at this store by appointment only, but I suspect that Manafort had the fancy tailor come to him. Manafort paid clothing bills of hundreds of thousands of dollars by bank wire transfers, from his secret bank accounts on the island of Cyprus. These bank accounts were so secret that Manafort claims to have known nothing about them – at least that’s what he claims to the IRS, not to his tailor.

Cosby Convicted!

Bill Cosby was convicted today and faces up to 30 years in prison for sexual assault. We dusted off my old Cosby cartoon from his first trial and it looks just as appropriate now as ever!

And, as far as I know, I’m the only cartoonist so far to draw Cosby in Hell – but somehow I think there will be many more.

Here are three of my favorite Cosby cartoons …

This one is by Taylor Jones

This one is by Rick McKee
