Tariff turmoil: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump’s certainly left his mark on the global economy, with his global tariffs continuing to wreak havoc on markets across the world. Here in the U.S., Wall Street has become something of a rollercoaster ride, jumping and falling on every Truth Social post from the president

The interest in everything tariffs was evident this week, as nearly all of our most-reprinted cartoons were about Trump’s tax hike on imported goods. Our most popular cartoon, drawn by Ed Wexler, focused on the poor penguins in Antarctica unexpectedly hit by Trump’s tariffs.

Dave Whamond also drew a pair of popular tariff cartoons – a funny one featuring a keyboard warrior turned tax expert, and another mocking our dwindling 401(k)s. If you haven’t logged into your retirement account lately, don’t start now. I’d wait for all of Trump’s “winning” to kick in.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Ed Wexler

#2. Dave Whamond

#3. Dave Whamond

#4. Dave Granlund

#5. Harley Schwadron

#6. John Darkow

Recession Rumblings – Top 10, August 4th, 2022

Are we in a recession or not? Experts have been debating what’s going on after figures released last week showed that while the U.S. economy shrank for the second straight quarter, job growth continues to be strong.

Of course, things are falling along political lines – Republicans say we are, Democrats say we’re not. Does everything have to be about politics?

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Top Ten Cartoons, July 1, 2022

Things are hot right now across the United States, and I’m not just talking about the weather.

Cartoonists responded to a host of issues this week, from the explosive January 6 committee hearings to the continued high prices we’re paying for just about everything. If that weren’t enough, there’s the looming threat of a recession off in the horizon, just in time for the midterm elections.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1

Chris Weyant took the #1 most reprinted spot.

#2

Dave Whamond took second place, also his first of two in the list!

#3

Jeff Koterba took third place!

#4

Rick McKee nabbed 4th place.

#5

John Darkow claims the five-spot.

#6

Dave Granlund landed in sixth.

#7

Randall Enos nabs seventh place.

#8

RJ Matson took 8th place.

#9

Dick Wright takes 9th place!

#10

Guy Parson’s number ten cartoon bridges the gap between weeks, coming in at number five last week. This cartoon was reprinted more than the other nine cartoons on the list this week.

Top Ten Cartoons, May 27, 2022

Another week has gone by, and the nation’s cartoonists remain locked in on the baby formula shortage impacting the country. The U.S. airlifted 70,000 pounds of baby formula from Europe over the weekend, and another flight is expected this week.

Inflation and the economy also remain ripe topics for cartoonists, with costs continuing to skyrocket and the price of gas surpassing record levels.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1

Pat Byrnes took the #1 most reprinted spot.

#2

John Darkow took second place.

#3

Daryl Cagle (that’s me) took third place!

#4

RJ Matson nabbed 4th place too.

#5

Dick Wright claims the five-spot.

#6

Dave Whamond came in sixth.

#7

Christopher Weyant also nabs seventh place.

#8

Guy Parsons took 8th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#9

John Darkow takes 9th place!

#10

RJ Matson wraps it up at number ten with his second cartoon on the list.

EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Easter was certainly on the minds of editors across the country this week, with four of our top ten most reprinted cartoons giving a nod to the religious holiday. Generally, editors and readers seem to enjoy holiday cartoons, while cartoonists typically hate drawing them.

Inflation was also a big story last week, with prices on just about everything continuing to rise. And editors remain uninterested in running cartoons about the war in Ukraine.

And here are the Top Ten …

#1

Bruce Plante took the #1 most reprinted spot, by a wide margin.

#2

John Darkow took second place with his first of two in the Top Ten.

#3

Dave Granlund took third place.

#4

Dave Granlund took 4th place too!

#5

Dick Wright claims the five-spot.

#6

Dave Whamond came in sixth.

#7

John Darkow nabs seventh place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#8

Rick McKee took 8th place.

#9

Jeff Koterba takes 9th place.

#10

Dave Granlund wraps it up at number ten with his third cartoon in the Top Ten.

Wrecked Retirement Cartoons

With the ups-and-downs of the stock market over the last couple of weeks, and the threat of a double-dip recession looming, those close to retirement have been getting queasy every time they look at their 401(k) statements.

Check out what cartoonists think of the whole mess with our new Wrecked Retirement cartoon collection.

Cartoon Week in Review

The weak job market and Wall Street’s ups and downs dominated the news this week. People watched their 401k’s with nervous despair as the market responded to problems in Europe and signs that the U.S. might be headed towards another recession. Oh, and there was some guy named Perry who entered the race for President. It would have be treasonous not to mention him.

Catch-up on all the week’s top news stories through the eyes of the nation’s best cartoonists with our Cartoon Week in Review cartoon slideshow

My New Years Cartoon

Here is my New Years cartoon.  First, I do a rough pencil sketch …

Then I do finished line art, also in pencil, but scanned as high contrast to look like I use ink.  This is the image most people will see in the newspaper.  My drawings are on 11″x17″ paper.  I work bigger than most editorial cartoonists.

And then I color it in Photoshop for the few newspapers that print cartoons in color, and for the Web.
