Here is my New Years cartoon. Â First, I do a rough pencil sketch …
Then I do finished line art, also in pencil, but scanned as high contrast to look like I use ink. Â This is the image most people will see in the newspaper. Â My drawings are on 11″x17″ paper. Â I work bigger than most editorial cartoonists.
And then I color it in Photoshop for the few newspapers that print cartoons in color, and for the Web.

Way cool. Thanks for showing that process. Crunchy message. too!
Wondering if the final is hand lettering or a font.
Jerry: check out repeated letters: all those "OOO"s… or compare "Y"s
Daryl, today you have at least three cartoons talking about the end of the decade. I suggest you hang onto those cartoons–you can use them a year from now when the decade actually ends.
Uh, I thought the decade started in 2000 and ends on 12/31/2009.
What are you talking about, Tom Rott?
Estato–When the current calendar was made there was no year zero. It went from 1 BC to 1 AD. Therefore the millennium didn't start in the year 2000 but in 2001 so the decade doesn't technically end until Dec. 31, 2010–Jan 1, 2011. Since most people see zeros instead of ones it's a matter of purity rather than popular opinion.
Daryl—Just wondering, on the original rough drawing, what are the straight lines at an angle for? I am guessing the vertical line is the middle of the page, but am wondering why the other lines.
