Democrats cave: Top ten cartoons of the week

The government is reopened and Democrats are being mocked for caving. Looks like everything is back to normal in Washington.

Our most-reprinted cartoon of the week was John Darkow’s perfect shutdown metaphor, comparing Democrats trusting Republicans to extend Obamacare subsidies to Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown. I think we all know how this will end.

Our cartoonists covered a lot of ground this week, with popular cartoons about Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, and even the northern lights. I personally liked Rick McKee’s cartoon about the old woman who lives in a shoe, a lucky recipient of one of Trump’s 50-year mortgages. I wonder if she’s still making payments.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. John Darkow

#2. Dave Granlund

We have a great new Caglecast podcast about Trump’s impending attack on Venezuela and it’s crooked president, Nicolas Maduro – with two great cartoonists, Taylor Jones and Arcadio Esquivel. The conversation gets into to how-to-draw and A.I., like most conversations around here do. Its fun!  Come watch!

DOGE CUTS: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

IRS agents. VA workers. Park rangers. Air traffic controllers. Social Security administrators. No one employed by the federal government appears safe with Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency waiving a chainsaw across Washington.

Our top two most-reprinted cartoons of the week come from Chris Weyant, and both mock Musk’s blunt and mistake-prone process of trimming the size of the federal workforce. I also enjoyed Jeff Koterba’s cartoon about astronauts returning home after being stuck on the International Space Station, only to find a “Planet of the Apes” scenario playing out in the U.S.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

My Newsletter to Our Cartoonists

Today I thought I would share today’s email newsletter that I sent to our cartoonists. Every week I send them a graph of the most reprinted cartoons of the week, and news about their royalty payments and other syndicate stuff that only cartoonists should be worried about.  –Daryl

Hi Cartoonists,

Payments
The last royalty payments to the USA cartoonists went in the mail on December 31st; you should be receiving them now. Payments for the 4th quarter of 2024 will go out to the international cartoonists soon. We’ll do the 1099s in about two weeks.

New Podcast: Most Popular/Most Reprinted Cartoons of 2024
Our new podcast is a master class in what editors want. I discuss the 35 most reprinted cartoons of the year with our two cartoonists who dominated reprints in syndication last year, Jeff Koterba and Chris Weyant. See it here: https://youtu.be/SZ42XoU6eUQ

Supply isn’t a good match for demand in editorial cartoons. Think of our syndicate like a store that contains thousands of products for sale, of which almost all the customers select only the same twenty products to buy. This podcast isn’t a judgement on which cartoons are good; it is only a judgement on which cartoons the editors wanted.

You’ll notice some commonalities in the cartoons that the demand side is looking for – funny cartoons that everyone can agree with that express commonly and widely held feelings about the news. Notice that there are no cartoons depicting Trump in the top 35, and no cartoons about news from outside the USA, aside from the Olympics and a couple of space aliens. Both conservative and liberal editors tend to select the same cartoons these days.

Congratulations to Jeff and Chris for their outstanding performance with editors last year. And congrats to the other cartoonists who drew their way into the most popular 35 cartoons last year, Dave Whamond, John Darkow, Rick McKee, Bob Englehart, Gary McCoy, Dave Granlund, RJ Matson, Adam Zyglis, Randy Enos and Guy Parsons. These cartoonists perform well with editors consistently.

The Top Twenty Cartoons of Last Week
Congratulations to Dave Whamond for a commanding performance last week – with the top cartoon and three in the Top Ten! (Enter the image number into the SEARCH on CagleCartoons.com to see each cartoon image.)

Here is Dave’s #1 cartoon of the last week:

And here is Chris Weyant’s #1 cartoon of 2024:

Thanks, everyone!

Trump and Taylor Swift!

Now there’s a highly unlikely couple.

On our most recent Caglecast podcast we asked three great editorial cartoonists to discuss drawings that depict the famous duo’s politics, cultural influence and, of course, their hair.

I’ll spare readers what Jeff Koterba, Rick McKee, Taylor Jones and I said about Trump or his politics — except to confess that we coupled him with Swift just because nobody watches if we don’t have the Donald to mock and skewer.

Joined by Jase Graves, a nationally syndicated humor columnist and Swiftie whom we syndicate at CagleCartoons.com, we concentrated on about 27 Swift cartoons.

Don’t miss our new TRUMP CHRISTMAS SPECIAL podcast on YouTube!

We old guys generally agreed that she was a talented and beautiful person who  despite being hard to caricature was fun to draw. Plus, I like Taylor Swift’s kind of politics just fine.

She too criticizes Trump. She is a pro-choice feminist. She supports LGTBQ rights and gun control. She voted for Biden-Harris in 2020. And she’s all for the removal of Confederate statues in Tennessee, where monuments to racist traitors are ubiquitous.

I’m a Swiftie – mostly for political cartoonist reasons. Another Swiftie is Jeff Koterba, who has drawn for over 30 years for the top newspaper in Nebraska.

We discussed his cartoon that showed a wall poster of Taylor on stage in a young girl’s bedroom and a poster in her brother’s bedroom that showed a busty Dolly Parton on stage in shorts with a bare midriff.

Jeff said he was looking for an upbeat and pleasant take on a world filled with awful terrible things like war overseas and nasty partisan politics at home.

Speaking of which – or should I say “drawing of which”? – Rick McKee’s Swift cartoon showed Uncle Sam buried under an avalanche of 20 important boulders like “Inflation,” “Ukraine War,” Govt. Corruption.”

A news reporter is bent over asking semi-crushed Uncle Sam, “How do you feel about Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift?”

McKee, who was the cartoonist for decades for the Augusta Chronicle in Georgia, was reacting to the Taylor Swift frenzy in the national media last summer. Though not a devout Swiftie, he admits being  “a recent convert” to understanding her massive appeal.

Taylor Jones, who draws for the Hoover Digest at Stanford, showed Taylor Swift on stage surrounded by a bunch of birds. She asks, “Are you my fans too?” and one says, “We’re chimney Swifts — the original Swifties!”

When I said I found it hard to draw attractive people like Taylor because their features are, by definition, too normal, too smooth and boring looking, Jones disagreed.

“To me,” he said, “Taylor Swift is pretty distinctive looking…. She’s got very thick hair” and there’s hardly “any space between her bangs and her eyes.”

I added that in addition to her great smile, her teeth are not just distinctive, they are cute. Usually you’d think teeth should  not be noticeable.

Jace Graves, the writer among us, said, it’s not just that Taylor Swift is beautiful. It’s that “she’s aware of her imperfections and she’s very real. I think that’s one thing that draws people to her.”

We discussed other cartoons from around the country starring Taylor Swift, including one by John Darkow that played off the fact that Time magazine named her its Person of the Year.

As two AI robots are looking at the Time magazine with Swift’s face on the cover, Darkow has one saying, “We’ll let them have this one” and the other saying, “But it’ll be the last.”

Eventually we picked up on the subject of Taylor Swift’s gigantic impact on the sports world because of her romance with K.C. Chiefs star Travis Kelce.

Dave Whamond’s cartoon had Taylor Swift named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year – and the NFL’s MVP.

We spent most of our  40 minutes focused on Taylor Swift and the impact she’s had on the economy, culture, sports, politics, the music industry and the hearts, minds and bodies of young girls.

We had virtually nothing negative to say about her – which was a refreshing change for our profession.

DEBT DEAL: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

After months of brinksmanship, House Republicans and President Joe Biden came together raise the debt ceiling and avert an economic calamity. Republicans got some of the cuts they wanted, Biden kept most of his economic policies intact, and editors got a flood of debt ceiling cartoons.

The bad news? Cartoonists will be back drawing more debt ceiling cartoons in 2025… unless we’re all replaced by AI.

Jeff Koterba Explains his Cartoon at our Exhibition

Jeff Koterba's "Big Lie Bat Cave" cartoon in the Donkeys and Elephants exhibition at the Salon in St Just le Martel, France. Donald Trump, elephants, bats, cave, election, denial, big lie,Republicans, Donald Trump
Jeff Koterba’s “Big Lie Bat Cave” cartoon in the Donkeys and Elephants exhibition at the Salon in St Just le Martel, France

We had two lovely exhibitions at the “International Center“, Press Cartoons museum in St Just le Martel, France this year. One of the shows was about Donkeys and Elephants.

Some people talk about cartooning being an international language, but it isn’t, a great example of cartoons that don’t cross borders are American donkey and elephant cartoons, which make no sense to foreign audiences. Our exhibit in France was curated by cartoons historian Olivier Auvray, who invited six cartoonists in our group to show their best donkey/elephant cartoons, which were presented with explanations –even with the explanations, the cartoons seemed seemed pretty difficult for the French fans to comprehend.

Here’s a video that Olivier took, of our cartoonist, Jeff Koterba, explaining his GOP Elephant Batcave cartoon to some French fans at the exhibition.

See CagleCartoonist Ed Wexler explaining his cartoon at our exhibition in France.

Our weekly Top Ten is now a newspaper column!  Subscribing editors can find it at CagleCartoons.com with download links to grab the cartoons in high resolution.

Koterba COVID Exhibit

My CagleCartoonist pal, Jeff Koterba, just put together a cool exhibition of his cartoons about the pandemic.  Here’s some pix as Jeff tells us about the show …

From Jeff Koterba:

“When art imitates…art.

Recently I drew a cartoon inspired by my own exhibit of cartoons. On display at Pottawattamie Arts, Culture and Entertainment in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  The exhibit consists of nearly 100 cartoons specifically about the pandemic (as far as I can tell, it’s the first cartoon exhibit on Covid in the world). Some are funny, while others are poingant and even inspirational—that’s my hope, anyway! The cartoons are displayed in concentric circles—in the manner of a European maze and take you on a timeline, from the start of the pandemic until today. Along the way viewers can not only see how my approach to drawing about Covid evolved but also how I made the switch to drawing digitally during those early days of lockdown.

As we were putting the finishing touches on the exhibit, an idea came to me that I should draw a cartoon about covid as a maze—in concentric circles. After I drew it, we printed it up and added it to the exhibit…
Now I can’t imagine the exhibit without it. Sort of a full circle kind of thing, you might say.   —Jeff Koterba

Want to see all of Jeff’s COVID cartoons? They are here. Take a look. I went to our PoliticalCartoons.com store, searched for Jeff Koterba and COVID, and all the cartoons popped up – more cool to see it in the round in Iowa, though.

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  January 29th, 2022. Congratulations to Dick Wright who drew the #1 cartoon and has three cartoons in the Top Ten! Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

Jeff Koterba on Editorial Cartooning

Jeff Koterba is one of the most popular CagleCartoonists! Jeff tells us what’s up with him and shares some of his recent favorites. See Jeff’s archive on Cagle.com here. – Daryl

When my full-time cartooning job at the local newspaper was eliminated a few months ago, I gave myself exactly one day to grieve. I’d been there for over 30 years and while it broke my heart to lose my job, I knew that better things were ahead. The next day, I decided to learn everything I could about Patreon. And, as it turns out, Patreon is not only a blessing for me as a cartoonist, but it’s giving my readers far more interesting and timely content than ever before.

For those not familiar with Patreon, it’s a fresh take on the traditional concept of artists creating work with the support of patrons.

As much as I love poking fun at politicians, I equally enjoy drawing about the things that impact us all very directly…

It’s no secret that newspapers are hurting. But journalism—and, I would argue, editorial cartoons—are now more essential to our democracy than ever. If you see my cartoons published here on Cagle.com or in other publications around the country, it’s thanks to Cagle and to my supporters on Patreon. It’s because of them that I’m able to create several cartoons each week on the topics that impact us all.

If nothing else, Covid inspires a new way to look at age-old situations like dating …

Also, now that I’m free of my local newspaper’s deadline, I’m able to draw cartoons whenever there is a breaking story, publishing the work immediately. Which means content that’s more timely than ever before for you.

And beyond that, I pull back the curtain on my creative process and invite supporters along the way, as I share sketches-in-progress, not to mention time-lapse videos of my process like this one.

I drew this cartoon as I watched live coverage of what was happening in Washington that day…soon after, I followed up with this cartoon.

Plus, there are lots of other perks. I even host an exclusive monthly Zoom show, “Koterba’s Theory of Creativity,” where I chat with guests about the creative process. In fact, my guest for March will be Rick Kirkman, not only one of my supporters on Patreon, but the artist behind the popular comic strip, “Baby Blues.”

I love connecting with my readers and I’d love for you to stop by my page and check it out!

Democracy’s return to flight .
Mostly, I’m inspired by news events. But sometimes, I’m inspired by what I see around me in my daily life. And when I kept seeing discarded masks, I knew there had to be a cartoon in there somewhere …

Visit Jeff’s page on Patreon.
