Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – January 23, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (January 16th through January 23th 2021).

We have a tie for 10th place so the Top Ten is the Top Eleven this week. This was inauguration week and the presidential transition dominated the news and the cartoons.

Dave Granlund‘s #1 cartoon got far more reprints than #2 and the rest of the pack. Congratulations, Dave! Dave Whamond, Jeff Koterba and Bill Day also had a fantastic week, each with two cartoons in the Top Eleven.

Kudos to the other CagleCartoonists who made the Top Eleven list this week: Steve Sack, Bruce Plante, Randy Enos and David Fitzsimmons.

The Top Ten cartoons are what most readers see since only 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints. Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

Pussyhats

On Saturday, the day after President Trump’s inauguration, we’ll see the Women’s March on Washington where the protest fashion of the day is “Pussyhats.” The hats are based on Trump Access Hollywood comments about “grabbing women by the pussy.” My wife is busy knitting pussyhats for herself and my daughter.

Since Liberty and Justice are the most important women in government, they should march with Pussyhats too. The idea of knitting as a protest makes me smile.

Washington Press Club Foundation Dinner

Another one of those rare occasions where I emerge from my hermit-like seclusion comes up this Wednesday.  I drew the program art for the Washington Press Club Foundation Dinner (at right) and I’m looking forward to attending.

They have an interesting tradition of getting top editorial cartoonists to draw the art for their program each year. I was impressed.

Come See Me at ApocalypTOON

I am reclusive and rarely seen, but I’ll be coming out of my shell next Thursday, January 26th, for ApocalypTOON in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington.

It looks like great fun. Come party with the cartoonists. So cool.

Best Deadline Earthquake Cartoons

Yesterday, a 5.8 earthquake struck Virgina, and shook up the entire East Coast, from Georgia to New England. Striking just before 2 p.m., many cartoonists were undoubtedly putting the finishing touches on Wednesday’s cartoon before they had to quickly shift gears and pump out a new cartoon about the rare earthquake for their newspaper.

Nate Beeler, of the Washington Examiner, came up with this inventive and funny cartoon…

Mobile Press-Register cartoonist J.D Crowe thinks a little bit of a shake-up is a good thing…

Rob Tornoe used the news of the injury of one of the Phillies’ star pitchers as the peg for his Philadelphia Inquirer toon…

While John Cole of the Scranton Times-Tribune and Adam Zyglis of the Buffalo News, drawing hundreds of miles apart, proved that two great minds can think alike… and at the same time too…
