Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 24, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 17th, through October 24th, 2020). As usual, drawings of President Trump were not popular with newspaper editors, but a tiny Trump sneaked into the Top Ten in John Cole‘s #4 debate cartoon.  Again this week the Top Ten cartoons dominated newspaper reprints as less popular cartoons got little or no ink and editors flocked to the same cartoons.

Dave Whamond had a fantastic week with three cartoons in the Top Ten – Dave’s #1 cartoon was a hit that ranks in the top five of the year.  John Cole also had an impressive week with two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Congratulations to the other CagleCartoonists with Top Ten cartoons this week: Gary McCoy,  John Darkow,  Jeff Koterba, Randy Enos and Chris Weyant.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 10, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 3rd, through October 10th, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump were popular with editors, even with Trump dominating the news every day.

My own cartoon was #1 this week, by an unusually wide margin. Dave Whamond had a whopper of a week with three cartoons in the Top Ten. Steve Sack and Dave Granlund also had impressive weeks, each taking two spots on the Top Ten.

Congratulations to the other two cartoonists with Top Ten cartoons: Jeff Koterba and Rick McKee.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints, and the Top Ten cartoons are what most readers see inter newspapers.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 12, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 29th through September 5th, 2020).

This was a rare week where a Trump cartoon made it into in the Top Ten (the #8 cartoon by Rick McKee). Six of the cartoons are about the pandemic.

Congratulations to John Cole for nabbing the #1 spot; John’s census cartoon ran away with the week, far ahead of the pack. Congrats to John Darkow for scoring a double with the #6 and #8 cartoons.

And kudos to the other CagleCartoonists who made the most reprinted list this week, Dave Granlund, R.J. Matson,  Jeff KoterbaGary McCoy, Dave Whamond, Rick McKee and Steve Sack.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

John Cole dominated the Top Ten this week with this very popular #1 cartoon.

#2

Jeff Koterba snags second place with the first of six pandemic cartoons in the Top Ten.

#3

Dave Granlund is tied for 3rd place.

#3

R.J. Matson shares third place.

#5

Gary McCoy takes 5th place with the only 9/11 anniversary cartoon – usually a more popular topic this time of year.

#6

John Darkow shares a tie for 6th place with his first of two cartoons in the Top Ten.

#6

Dave Whamond also shares the 6th place tie.

#8

John Darkow shares a tie for 8th place with his second of two cartoons in the Top Ten.

#8

Rick McKee, who dominated the reprints last week, is tied for 8th place with a Trump cartoon. Cartoonists draw lots of Trump cartoons, but editors ignore them most of the time.

#10

Steve Sack wraps up the list in tenth place.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 22, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 15th through August 22nd, 2020). As usual, no drawings of president Trump were among the most popular with newspaper editors. No cartoons about the Democratic Convention, Joe Biden or Kamala Harris got much ink. Steve Bannon’s arrest garnered some cartoons but got few reprints. Foreign cartoonists drawing about Belarus and the poisoning of a top Russian dissident were ignored by editors.

The top performing cartoons this week are a clear lesson in what editors want now: light cartoons about the tough times Americans live in. There are four pandemic/back-to-school cartoons on the list this week, which remains the most popular topic with editors, as it has been for the past three months.

The CagleCartoonists who are usually the most reprinted were again the most reprinted this week. Congratulations to the four cartoonists who each have two cartoons in the Top Ten, Dave Whamond (#1 and #8), Jeff Koterba (#2 and #4), Steve Sack (#5 and #9) and Dave Granlund (#5 and #7).  And kudos to the two other cartoonists who made the most reprinted list this week, John Darkow and Adam Zyglis!

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 25, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 18 through July 25, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons.  Seven cartoons were related to the pandemic this week, sports and Back to School remain the most popular sub-topics.

Rick McKee returns to the Top Ten this week, taking the top spot by a wide margin.  Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba dominated yet again with two cartoons each in the Top Ten.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists who made the Top Ten this week, Steve Sack, Peter Kuper, Bob Englehart and Kevin Siers. (One of my own cartoons just barely slipped in at #10.)

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

Congratulations to Rick McKee who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week.

#2

Steve Sack takes second place with the popular Back to School with COVID theme!

#3

Dave Whamond takes the #3 spot with his John Lewis obit cartoon. A number of CagleCartoonists drew great John Lewis portrait style memorial cartoons, but Dave’s was the first one that was posted and the early bird gets third place as editors were clearly eager to get this cartoon printed as soon as possible, and then weren’t interested in a similar portrait obit cartoon after they printed this one.

#4

Jeff Koterba is tied for both 4th and 5th place this week.

#5

Here’s Jeff Koterba again, with an impressive second cartoon in the Top Ten, which is not unusual for Jeff.

#6

Peter Kuper takes sixth place.

#7

Here’s Dave Whamond with his second cartoon in the Top Ten this week – a feat that also isn’t unusual for Dave.

#8

Bob Englehart is tied for 8th place with this COVID sports cartoon, a popular topic with editors now.

#8

Kevin Siers also tied for 8th place.

#10

My own (Daryl Cagle) cartoon barely slipped in at #10.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 18, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 11 through July 18, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons.  This week has the usual steep curve between the most popular cartoons and all the rest. Only five cartoons were related to the pandemic this week, four cartoons featured sports in some way, and there were two Back to School cartoons.

Gary McCoy takes the top spot by a wide margin, with an unusual Joe Biden bashing cartoon that doesn’t show Biden or Trump –something that seems to be a requirement among editors.  Dave Whamond dominated again this week with three cartoons in the Top Ten, all part of a crazy four-way tie for second place. Pat Bagley impresses with two cartoons on the list this week.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists who made the Top Ten this week, John Cole, Jeff Koterba, Bill Day and Bruce Plante.

#2

Dave Whamond follows with his 2nd #2, another Back to School cartoon.

#2

Here’s Dave Whamond dominating the Top Ten again this week, with his 3rd #2.
