Christmas Crunch – Top Ten of the Week

It’s the most wonderful time of year, until you check out the price of gifts for Christmas.

Inflation might be slowing down, but prices are still high and a number of our most popular cartoons this week touched on the expensive costs of gifts this holiday season.

Another popular subject was former President Donald Trump suggesting we rip up the Constitution and redo the 2020 election. I’d go into the reasons he cited, but they’re just as fictional as Santa himself.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Gary McCoy, Cagle.com

#2. Rivers, Cagle.com

#3. Gary McCoy, Cagle.com

#4. Dave Whamond, Cagle.com

#5. Dave Granlund, Cagle.com

#6. Pat Bagley, Salt Lake Tribune

#7. Chris Weyant, Boston Globe

#8. Dick Wright, Cagle.com

#9. Jeff Koterba, Cagle.com

#10. Dick Wright, Cagle.com

Crazy Republicans and Military Sexual Assault Bill

Often I get a message from Facebook that shows one of my old cartoons and says “This is what you were doing seven years ago.” And I sometimes think, “Wow, that cartoon is just as good today.” Here are a couple of examples of that – I changed a few words on seven year old cartoons and re-released them as “revisions.” Here are the crazy Republicans, 2021 version …

And here’s an updated Military Sexual Assault Bill cartoon that was a cartoon about a “Military Sexual Assault Report” eight years ago the report made news and led to no change at all.

This is my illustration of the toxic work environment in the military. Most problems don’t go away. Maybe this new bill will help.

GOP Deflects to Seuss and Potato

As congressional Republicans unanimously voted to kill the popular economic stimulus plan, they diverted attention to Mr. Potato Head and Dr. Seuss. Cancel Culture is, popular with their base and it is easy for them to come back to the comfort zone. Here’s my cartoon and some of my GOP + Seuss + Potato favorites.

Daryl Cagle

John Cole
Monte Wolverton
Adam Zyglis

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – March 6, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending March 6th, 2021. Congratulations to Jeff Koterba who won the week with the #1 and #10 cartoons. Congrats to Steve Sack who got the overall most reprints for the week with the #2 and #4 cartoons.

And kudos to the other cartoonists in the Top Ten this week: Bruce Plante, Dave Whamond, Rick McKee, Daryl Cagle (me), Adam Zyglis, and John Darkow.

This week we had six pandemic cartoons, two on Dr. Seuss, one on New York Governor Cuomo and one on the murdering Saudi prince. Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 60+ cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

COVID Christmas!

Here’s my new COVID Christmas cartoon.

Here are some recent COVID Christmas favorites from the Cagle Cartoonists. This one is by Swiss cartoonist Patrick Chappatte.

This one is by Pat Byrnes.

These two are by the great Dave Whamond.

And here’s my own Christmas COVID cartoon again, from a couple of weeks ago.

I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of these soon!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – December 5, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (November 28th through December 5th 2020). The Top Ten cartoons were tightly bunched, and all were big hits with editors.

Five of the cartoons had Christmas themes. Seven of the cartoons are about the pandemic. As usual, no drawings of Trump were popular with newspaper editors. No cartoons about foreign issues were popular. 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints – that means the Top Ten cartoons are what readers see.

Dave Whamond had a great week again this week, with strong #1 and #4 cartoons. RJ Matson had a very impressive week, with the #2 and #6 cartoons. Dave Granlund is also second to no one with two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons of the week, John Darkow, Rick McKee, Adam Zyglis and Jeff Koterba who continues his long streak in the Top Ten.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

#1

Dave Whamond wins the week with this very popular Christmas/pandemic cartoon.

#2

RJ Matson takes second place with his first of two cartoons in the Top Ten.

#3

John Darkow snags third place with this about the female football player at Vanderbilt – a topic that editors clearly wanted to see in cartoons.

#4

Dave Granlund is tied for 4th place again with the first of his three cartoons in the Top Ten.

#4

Dave Whamond is also tied for 4th place with his second cartoon on the most reprinted list. Editors love cartoons that complain about how terrible this year has been.

#6

RJ Matson  takes 6th place with this beautiful rendering. Waterfalls are hard to draw, the Capitol building is hard to draw, and it is hard to make this dramatic perspective work.  This one is an eye-popper.

#7

Jeff Koterba claims 7th place with another Christmas/pandemic cartoon. Jeff seems to have carved out a permanent home on the weekly Top Ten.

#8

Dave Granlund is tied for 8th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#8

Rick McKee shares the tie for 8th place. Editors don’t seem to shy away from Biden cartoons, as they do with Trump cartoons, but cartoonists don’t draw Biden often.

#10

Adam Zyglis avoids drawing a self-portrait in this auto-biographical cartoon.

COVID Halloween

Halloween cartoons are always popular, and this year it will be a COVID Halloween. I’m a little early with my new cartoon, but I’m far from the first this year. I expect there will be many more.  See my archive.

Dave Whamond’s Halloween Grinch cartoon is crazy popular with editors, and has a shot at #1 on this week’s Top Ten.

Dave Granlund’s COVID Halloween cartoon is crazy popular too.

Our realistic, Dutch, CagleCartoonist, Bart van Leeuwen made a great Halloween Grim Reaper Trump.

We’ll post some more Halloween cartoons when we have a good batch.

Bolton Book!

Former National Security Advisor, John Bolton, has a new book full of salacious details about Donald Trump. According to a report based on an unredacted version of the book, Trump demanded of China’s president Xi, “Make sure I’m elected,” and he told Xu that he approved of China building “concentration camps” for their Muslim minority. Nasty stuff. The cartoonists are all over it. Come look!
