Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – February 12th, 2022

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  February 12th, 2022. Congratulations to Dave Granlund who took the #1 spot this week by a wide margin. Dave was also the most reprinted cartoonist of the week.  And kudos to Rivers who was #2 on the Top Ten and overall lists this week –and to Jeff Koterba who has two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Support for our French Museum Friends

Our friends at the charming, editorial cartoon museum in St Just le Martel, Franceare in the last push of a national competition to host a new, national “House” of Editorial Cartoons – something that doesn’t exist anywhere in the world. They have asked their cartoonist friends to submit cartoons in support of their bid. Here’s mine.
To explain my cartoon, the story goes that God told little St Just to throw his hammer, which landed in a spot that turned into a spring, where water squirted up, and God instructed St Just to build a church for him on that spot, which became the little town of St Just le Martel (St Just the hammer). I know, its complex, but our French friends will get it.

The competition is tough, two spots in Paris, one in Strasbourg and the French National Library also submitted bids – still, St Just should win and I wish them all the luck. Any other cartoonist friends of St Just are encouraged to pitch in with cartoons now (contact the museum). A decision is expected soon.

Here’s a cartoon supporting St Just’s bid from my French cartoonist pal, Pierre Ballouhey – this one needs explaining too. St Just is in cow country, and they use brown cows as their mascot. That’s Pierre getting kissed by the top cow, and that’s the museum at the bottom.

New CagleCartoonist: Dick Wright

I’m pleased to announce that we have added conservative cartoonist, Dick Wright to our CagleCartoons.com newspaper syndication package! Dick has been one of America’s top editorial cartoonists for over 32 years, but he retired from cartooning in 2005 to devote his time to being a pastor of a church he founded in Warrenton, Virginia – now he’s inspired to come back to syndication with us. Conservative cartoonists are rare, and great conservative cartoonists are extremely rare; we’re delighted to have Dick join our cartoonists and we look forward to seeing him give more weight to the right side of our left leaning group.

Dick is new to us, but he has been around for a long time.  Dick retired from United Features Syndicate in 2005 with a personal list of 420 subscribing newspapers; he has also been syndicated by the McNaught Syndicate, Copley News Service, the Los Angeles Times Syndicate and Tribune Media Services (now called “Tribune Content Agency,” which is the only syndicate on the list that is still in business). Dick has worked as a staff cartoonist for The Columbus Dispatch (OH), The Nashville Banner (TN), The Gwinnett Post (GA), The San Diego Union (CA), The Providence Journal-Bulletin (RI) and Scripps-Howard Newspapers (for a chain of 16 of their papers). Dick really gets around and he has won scores of awards in his long, impressive career.

Dick is starting up again with black and white cartoons but he will be adding color soon. See his archive here and some of his recent favorites below. Welcome aboard, Dick!

AN INVITATION … FEBRUARY 18TH

Hey, check this out … Our own Steve Sack has won the most recent National Press Foundation (NPF) Berryman Award. The NPF usually has a big, annual banquet for their award winners but this year, because of the pandemic, they are having a free, online event on “Hopin“, and they have invited everyone to attend.

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. Pacific Time ON FEBRUARY 18TH, with the main program at 5:30 Pacific – 6:15 pm. followed by a “break-out-room” from 6:15 pm to 6:45 p.m. where Steve Sack will be speaking about his work. It will be moderated by last year’s Berryman winner, CagleCartoonist R. J. Matson. Register for the event at: https://hopin.com/events/npf-2021-awards-celebration You will receive a Zoom-like email 24 hours prior to the event, which will give you another link OR you can also use the same registration link at that time – it goes to the same place on Hopin.

Church Superspreaders

Here’s my new one about COVID super spreader churches.

This is a recurring theme, where big, conservative churches that take a Trumpy, casual attitude about the pandemic, insist on holding their indoor, massless, mass events with singing, no distancing, and lots of disease spreading.

This church/hands thing is a kind of standard for editorial cartoonists, like the Hokey Pokey or the theme from Gilligan’s Island, or the Cats Cradle game. Some years ago I drew a similar cartoon about Obamacare’s contraceptive mandate, and I lifted the first panel for the new cartoon. The perspective on the hands in the first panel is odd, because we usually see the other side, with the thumbs as doors, but that is the view of the person who is performing this, and not the observer, and I like flipping it open with the thumbs on the close side. Yes, I think about all this stuff.

The oldie wasn’t a very strong cartoon. The first panel was fine, but I didn’t like the awkward second panel hands – that needed a redo, so I drew my own hands today. (There seems to be some disagreement about whether the “people” should properly be presented upright or upside-down.)

And I drew some coronavirus and assembled this in Photoshop.

That’s your recipe for a church pandemic cartoon.

Notre Dame Fire

4/16/19 A bunch of new Notre Dame Fire cartoon favorites are added below. –Daryl

It was such a horror, watching the fire consume Notre Dame. I drew a cartoon as fast as I could –a teardrop cartoon. It was the best I could come up with on short notice. The editorial cartoonists think teardrop cartoons are trite, but we all do them. Readers love the teardrop cartoons at tragic times. I went with the Charles Laughton hunchback. So sad to see this unfold.

Here are some new favorites, from the day after, 4/16/19 …

This one is by my friend, French cartoonist Robert Rousso

This one is by Sean Delonas.

This is by Rick McKee of the Augusta Chronicle.

This one is by Jeff Koterba of the Omaha World Herald.

This is by Steve Sack of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The first Notre Dame cartoon that came in to us was from my buddy, Randy Enos.

This one is by RJ Matson.

Nashville’s Churches Could be BIGGER

Here’s my latest local, altie-newspaper cartoon for the Nashville Scene. Nashville is called the “buckle of the Bible Belt” because the place is full of colossal, mega-churches and giant church corporate headquarters. The scale of these churches is stunning. I’m from California where people don’t talk to each other as often as chatty Tennesseans. Often, the first thing I hear in a conversation with a neighbor, or someone I don’t know, is “where do you go to church?”
