Catching up! Back to School Blues Top Ten!

Wow! Two Top Ten Catoons fo the Week in two days!  Well … that’s because I was traveling and I’m back now and slowly catching up.  This one is the latest Top Ten, for last week!  Really!   And I’ll get a new podcast up very soon – I promise!

Parents are normally ecstatic when it’s time for their children to shuffle back to school. But thanks to inflation, the price of just about everything remains high, including that cost of school supplies.

Jeff Koterba’s cartoon about budgeting for back-to-school was our most-reprinted cartoon of the week. Bob Englehart’s cartoon about the whole thing being a scam was also popular with editors.

As far as politics are concerned, I chuckled at Chris Weyant’s cartoon about the annoying back-and-forth over crowd sizes, while Dick Wright dinged Kamala Harris for copying Donald Trump’s plan to make tips tax free.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Jeff Koterba

#2. Bob Englehart

#3. Randal Enos

#4. John Darkow

#5. Dick Wright

#6. Chris Weyant

Economic roller coaster: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

Wall Street gave everyone whiplash last week, with stocks tanking before bouncing back in a late-week comeback.

Dave Granlund’s “The sky is falling!” cartoon was popular among editors this week, and I loved the imagery of Chris Weyant’s Olympics-inspired toon about the brief stock market crash.

This week’s most-popular cartoon continued on a theme that began a few weeks ago, about people looking for any excuse to ignore the election. With astronauts stuck on the International Space Station until February, they won’t just miss the election – they won’t be back to Earth until after we inaugurate a new president.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. John Darkow

#2. Dave Granlund

#3. John Darkow

#4. Rick McKee

#5. Rivers

#6. Dick Wright

#7. Dave Whamond

Stuck in space: Top ten cartoons of the week

The U.S. will have a new president before two astronauts trapped in space will be able to return home.

Thanks to issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams will be stuck on the International Space Station until at least February, when either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump will be living in the White House.

Chris Weyant mocked the situation in a cartoon popular with editors this week, comparing the astronauts’ wait to Joe Biden’s lame-duck status as commander in chief. I also enjoyed Dave Granlund’s comparison of the situation to Gilligan’s Island, the classic TV show where a “three hour tour” famously turned into a much longer stay on an uncharted desert island.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. John Darkow

ROBOT REVOLUTION: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

Afraid of robots taking over? If you’re phone habits are like most Americans, they already have, as Dave Whamond points out in his funny cartoon about artificial intelligence and our growing addiction to screens.

Sadly, a lot of the info we’re reading online is wrong. Frank Hansen mocked Google for its error-filled, A.I.-powered search results that told people to put glue on pizza and to eat rocks.

Fortunately, computers will be drawing all editorial cartoons in the near future, so the robots won’t have to worry about being mocked by us humans.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Whamond

#2. Dave Granlund

#3. Jeff Koterba

#4. John Darkow

#5. Frank Hansen

DEBATE DREAD: Top Ten Cartoons

Our list of the most-reprinted cartoons was a real smorgasbord this week, with topics ranging from the increasing role of artificial intelligence to the collapse of Red Lobster. I particularly enjoyed Bob Englehart’s cartoon about the tough needle cartoonists need to thread these days to make it onto the opinion page.

Editors loved Chris Weyant’s cartoon about next month’s presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Though I don’t think CNN will be promoting it as “The Geezer vs. The Sleazer.”

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

TEENS and SCREENS: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

Addicted to screens? You’re not alone – according to recent studies, upwards of half of all Americans who own a smartphone display addictive behavior.

But that’s also nothing new. As Dave Whamond points out in his popular cartoon this week, people were addicted to their television screens when phones were still devices attached to the wall.

Maybe that’s why so many people flocked to see the northern lights, supercharged this year by massive solar flares. As Jeff Koterba points out, it’s a rare moment where people from across the political spectrum can enjoy something together. Or maybe they’re just sick of their phones

PROTEST PROBLEMS: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

School protests have dominated the headlines this week, as demonstrators have clashed with police at universities across the country attempting to voice their opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza.

Two of our most popular cartoons this week were about the protests, both drawn by Chris Weyant.

There was also South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s bizarre story about shooting and killing her young dog, brazenly told as an example of making the tough decisions. Editors enjoyed Rick McKee’s funny cartoon about Noem, which featured Snoopy being fired upon while flying his doghouse.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#2. John Darkow

SELL THE HOUSE: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

The cost of everything, from gas to groceries, remains stubbornly high. But nothing seems as outrageously expensive as trying to buy a new home.

Home prices skyrocketed during the COVID pandemic, and inflation fears forced interest rates to rise. Rivers tapped into the economic insecurity over the housing market with a funny cartoon featuring two mutts striking it big by selling their tiny doghouse.

Another carton editors liked this week was Adam Zyglis’ take on the death of O.J. Simpson, whose funeral procession was drawn to resemble Simpson’s infamous Ford Bronco police chase.

ECLIPSE TIME! Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

On Monday, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, a momentary break from the bad news we’ve all be drowning in the past few months.

I like Pat Byrnes cartoon in particular, noting how nice a change it will be to know why we’re all plunged in darkness – at least those in the path of the eclipse, as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Unfortunately, the eclipse will only last a few hours. Too bad it couldn’t stick around through the election.

TRUMP TRIALS! Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

It’s hard to satirize the news and Donald Trump with headlines like, “Ex-president selling bibles to help pay legal cost of porn star hush money trial.”

Chris Weyant has had a lot of success poking fun at Trump. He had our most reprinted cartoon this week, a funny look at the former president’s various trials through the lens of the NCAA tournament.

Speaking of madness, the Republicans and Speaker Mike Johnson have just a one seat majority in the House, thanks to some recent retirements. As John Darkow suggests in his popular cartoon this week, now is definitely a good time for Congress to go on spring break.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

ALL ABOUT AGE: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Age is on the mind of voters in America, with 81-year-old Joe Biden and 77-year-old Donald Trump set to face off in November’s presidential election.

John Cole had a funny spin on the issue of age this week that struck a chord with editors. None of us are getting any younger, and we’re still eight stress-inducing months away from the election.

Biden Woes: The Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

It was another busy week for the nation’s cartoonists, with news running the gamut from Mitch McConnell stepping down from Republican leadership to AT&T’s cell phones going down across the country.

This week’s most-reprinted cartoon came from Dick Wright, who was not a fan of President Joe Biden’s most recent move to forgive student loan debt for over 150,000 borrowers. Biden continues to struggle in polling against former President Donald Trump, and he (as well as his bite-happy dog, Commander) has found himself an accessible target for cartoonists.
