Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – November 14, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (November 7th through November 14th 2020). This week the editors flocked to the same cartoons, as usual, with the few, most popular cartoons far outpacing the rest.

This week’s #1 cartoon by Jeff Koterba is the second most reprinted editorial cartoon of the year, and it may yet overtake Dave Granlund’s #1 cartoon of the year so far, from three weeks ago. The #2 cartoon by Dave Whamond would have been a strong #1 in a typical week where the usage curve wasn’t quite so steep.

Dave Whamond and Dave Granlund both impress with two cartoons each on the Top Ten. Hearty congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week, Dave Fitzsimmons, Pat Byrnes, Monte Wolverton, Randy Enos and Gary McCoy

The most popular topic this week was Alex Trebek. Only two cartoons referencing the pandemic made the Top Ten list.  Cartoonists drew scores of cartoons about Trump’s refusal to accept the election results this week, but only three were popular with editors who ignored most of these cartoons.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

#1

Jeff Koterba‘s #1 cartoon was the most reprinted cartoon of the week by far.

#2

Dave Whamond has the first of three Alex Trebek obit cartoons in the Top Ten. Editors seem to love cartoons that marvel at what a bad year 2020 is.

#3

Dave Whamond also nabs third place. In a week where Trump’s refusal to accept the election results dominated the news, few cartoons on the topic were popular with newspaper editors.

#4

Dave Fitzsimmons takes 4th place with the second Alex Trebek cartoon on the list.

#5

Dave Granlund takes fifth place with the third Alex Trebek obit cartoon.

#6

Dave Granlund also takes 6th place.

#7

Pat Byrnes nabs 7th place.

#8

Monte Wolverton takes 8th place.

#9

Randy Enos nabs 9th place with this nice pandemic cartoon.

#10

Gary McCoy wraps up the Top Ten with this Veterans Day cartoon. In other years, Veterans Day got more attention from both editors and cartoonists.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – November 7, 2020

This was a crazy election week! Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 31st through November 7th 2020). Newspaper editors found lots of cartoons they liked this week and the usage curve was flattened. Many cartoons were bunched together in the stats, with each getting lots of reprints – very different from recent weeks when editors all reprinted the same, few cartoons. Editors found a lot to like this week.

We have a crazy, improbable, four way tie for first place, with each first place cartoon getting about half as many reprints as last week’s #1 cartoon. Every Top Ten cartoon this week was about the election but, as usual, none of the most reprinted cartoons included drawings of Trump or Biden.  This is the first week for many months where no coronavirus cartoons made the Top Ten.

Congrats to Jeff Koterba who has two cartoons on the list, including one cartoon tied for #1. Two of my own cartoons tied for #1. Kudos to Rick McKee who also shares the four-way tie for #1 this week.

I was pleased to see our new CagleCartoonist, Pat Byrnes, made the Top Ten list this week. Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week: RJ Matson, Dave Granlund, John Darkow and Pat Bagley.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 31, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 24th, through October 31st, 2020). Newspaper editors flocked to the same, few cartoons and most of the cartoons got little or no exposure. Cartoons mentioning Trump or Biden were unpopular with editors again this week.

Editors’ collective preference for a handful of cartoons was never clearer to see as the #1 and #2 cartoons this week were also the #1 and #2 cartoons of the year, since we started keeping comparative usage statistics last January. Congratulations to Dave Granlund for his runaway #1 cartoon and to Dave Whamond for his #2 of the week and year.

Special congratulations to John Darkow who has two cartoons in the Top Ten this week, and kudos to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons: Gary McCoy, Jeff Koterba, Chris Weyant, Pat Bagley, Bob Englehart and Dave Fitzsimmons.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 24, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 17th, through October 24th, 2020). As usual, drawings of President Trump were not popular with newspaper editors, but a tiny Trump sneaked into the Top Ten in John Cole‘s #4 debate cartoon.  Again this week the Top Ten cartoons dominated newspaper reprints as less popular cartoons got little or no ink and editors flocked to the same cartoons.

Dave Whamond had a fantastic week with three cartoons in the Top Ten – Dave’s #1 cartoon was a hit that ranks in the top five of the year.  John Cole also had an impressive week with two cartoons in the Top Ten.

Congratulations to the other CagleCartoonists with Top Ten cartoons this week: Gary McCoy,  John Darkow,  Jeff Koterba, Randy Enos and Chris Weyant.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 17, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (October 10th, through October 17th, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump were popular with newspaper editors.  Typically 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints; this week it is more like 10% of the cartoons getting 90% of the reprints as less popular cartoons got little or no ink and editors flocked to the same cartoons.

My own cartoon from last Sunday was #1 this week, by a big margin; in fact, it is the most reprinted cartoon since we starting keeping comparative download stats from subscribing newspaper editors at the beginning of the year.

Dave Whamond also stood well above the crowd with a #2 cartoon that would have been a strong #1 in any other week. Dave and I both had two cartoons on the Top Ten this week. Congratulations to the other cartoonists who made the unusually hot Top Ten this week, Dave Fitzsimmons, Steve Sack, Dave Granlund, Rick McKee, Kevin Siers and RJ Matson.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

#2

Dave Whamond had a #2 cartoon that was unusually popular with editors; it is Dave’s first of two cartoons in the Top Ten.

#3

Dave Fitzsimmons takes 3rd place. It looks like “Halloween in these crazy times” is what editors want.

#4

Dave Whamond takes 4th place with his second of two cartoons in the Top Ten.

#5

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 3, 2020

Correction 10/14/20: I have to apologize for making an error in the Top Ten for this week, and it was a big error. John Darkow actually had both the #1 and #2 cartoons of the week, and both by a large margin – those darn stats! I have added the missing top cartoon as a second #1 cartoon, with a special congratulations to John for the incredible feat of capping the list with two mega-popular cartoons!

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (September 23rd through October 3rd, 2020). The news about President Trump contracting COVID generated a lot of cartoons on Friday, but none of them made the Top Ten. There was a lot of criticism of Trump’s overly aggressive debate performance, but not in the cartoons that editors chose to publish about the debate.

Congratulations to John Darkow for his #1 cartoon that outpaced the pack by a wide margin this week. Dave Granlund also had a great week with two cartoons on the list. Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba continued their long streaks of Top Ten appearances. We had an unusual three way tie for ninth place so there are eleven cartoons on the list this week.

Kudos to the other cartoonists who made our list of the cartoons most published in newspapers this week, Steve Sack, Rick McKee, Gary McCoy, Randy Enos – and me.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

CORRECTED 10/14/20: Here is the correction, added as John’s second #1 cartoon of the week.  John Darkow has TWO cartoons in first place, both outpacing the pack by a big margin.

#1

John Darkow is in first place, outpacing the pack by a big margin.

#2

Dave Whamond follows with the #2 cartoon. Editors were interested only in debate cartoons that were even handed in their criticism of Trump and Biden.

#3

Steve Sack takes 3rd place. The pandemic’s effect on sports is a favorite topic for editors.

#4

Dave Granlund had a strong week with two cartoons in the Top Ten.

#5

Rick McKee takes 5th place with the only cartoon about the Supreme Court fight.

#6

I nabbed 6th place. The news cycle didn’t leave much space for the cartoons about Trump’s taxes. See my Daryl Cagle archive here..

#7

Dave Granlund’s even handed debate cartoon is his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#7

Eighth place goes to Jeff Koterba with another even handed debate cartoon.

#9

Randy Enos shares a three way tie for 9th place with a pandemic at school cartoon, which has been the favorite topic of editors for months.

#9

Here is the first of two, conservative Gary McCoy cartoons that are tied for 9th place.

#9

Here is Gary McCoy’s second cartoon that is tied for 9th place.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 26, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (September 19th through September 26th, 2020).

Three of the top cartoons are about the pandemic, five are about Justice Ginsburg and her Supreme Court seat.

Congratulations to Dave Whamond for taking the #1 spot, and to Dave Granlund at #2. The top two cartoons outpaced the pack by a wide margin this week.

Kudos to Steve Sack and Jeff Koterba who each have two cartoons in the Top Ten. And congrats to the other cartoonists who made our list of the cartoons most published in newspapers this week, Pat Bagley, Rick McKee, John Darkow – and me.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 19, 2020

Here are our top cartoons of last week (September 12th through September 19th, 2020).

This was an incredible week for Dave Granlund who dominates with four cartoons among the Top Ten most reprinted cartoons.

Every so often, when there is more demand for a topic than there are cartoons on the topic, I’ll repost “evergreen” oldies into the syndication flow, and I’ll mark them “REPOST” so editors won’t be embarrassed by forgetting that they ran the oldie before. Last week I reposted a few cartoons about the wildfires on the West coast, including one by Dave Granlund that made the Top Ten – the first time that has ever happened with a reposted cartoon.

As usual, no drawings of Trump made the Top Ten this week.  Six of the top cartoons are about the pandemic, two are about the fires, and only one is about the election.

Congratulations to Dave Fitzsimmons  for nabbing the #1 spot. Jeff Koterba was close behind at #2.  Jeff continues his long streak of appearances in the Top Ten, the day after being laid off from 31 years on the job at The Omaha World-Herald newspaper.

And kudos to the other CagleCartoonists who made the most reprinted list this week, John Cole, Randy Enos, Dave Whamond and Bruce Plante.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#3

Dave Granlund shares third place.

#5

Dave Granlund takes 5th place with his second of four cartoons in the Top Ten this week.

#6

#7

Dave Whamond takes 7th place with an “everyday life in the pandemic” cartoon that editors crave.

#8

Dave Granlund takes 8th place with a wildfire oldie that we reposted – the first time an oldie has made the Top Ten.

Dave Granlund caps off his impressive with with his fourth cartoon in the Top Ten.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 5, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 29th through September 5th, 2020). As usual, no drawings of president Trump were among the most popular with newspaper editors. Seven of the cartoons are light, life during the pandemic cartoons. Three are “back to school during the pandemic” cartoons, which is still the most popular topic with editors.

Rick McKee runs away with the week, claiming the #1, #4 and #10 spots! I’m impressed! Dave Granlund also had a great week taking #2 and #7. Congrats to Rick and Dave!

Kudos to the other cartoonists who made the Top Ten most reprinted list this week, Kevin Siers, Ed Wexler, Dave Whamond, Bruce Plante, and Jeff Koterba.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

Rick McKee dominated the week with this very popular #1 cartoon, along with two more in the Top Ten.

This second place cartoon by Dave Granlund also stood out from the pack with well more reprints than the rest. Dave has two cartoons in the Top Ten this week.

#3

Kevin Siers takes 3rd place with a “back to school” during the pandemic cartoon, a topic that remains the most popular with newspaper editors.

#4

Rick McKee also takes 4th place, with his second of three cartoons in the Top Ten this week.

#5

Ed Wexler takes 5th place – editors crave “everyday life during the pandemic” cartoons.

#6

Dave Whamond takes 6th place with a “back to school during the pandemic” cartoon.

#7

Dave Granlund nabs 7th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#8

#9

Rick McKee shares a tie for 9th place, rounding out the Top Ten with his third cartoon. Quite a week for Rick!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 29, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 22nd through August 29th, 2020). As usual, no drawings of president Trump were among the most popular with newspaper editors, even with the Republican convention this week. Six of the cartoons are light, life during the pandemic cartoons. Three are “back to school during the pandemic” cartoons, which remains the most popular topic with editors.

Congratulations to the two CagleCartoonists who have two cartoons each in the Top Ten, Dave Whamond (#1 and #8 – as he did last week) and Jeff Koterba (#3 and #8). I was happy to see Randy Enos come in with a strong #2!  Kudos to the other cartoonists who made the most reprinted list this week, Steve SackAdam Zyglis, Dave Granlund, Dave Fitzsimmons and Gary McCoy.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

Congratulations to Dave Whamond  who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon again this week, the first of Dave’s two cartoons in the Top Ten!

#2

Randy Enos takes second place. The top two cartoons stood out as much more reprinted than the rest this week.

#3

Jeff Koterba takes 3rd place.

#4

Adam Zyglis takes 4th place.

#5

Dave Fitzsimmons takes for 5th place.

#6

Steve Sack ties for 6th place with a drawing of the White House that doesn’t show Trump – would fewer editors have reprinted this one if Trump was in it?

#6

Dave Granlund is also tied for 6th place, with the only hurricane cartoon.

#8

Jeff Koterba  is tied for 8th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#8

Dave Whamond is tied for 8th place with his second cartoon on our most reprinted list. Dave could just as easily chosen to put Trump in the place of the Republican elephant, and if he did, I’ll bet the cartoon wouldn’t have made the Top Ten.

#10

Gary McCoy claims the ten spot with this Biden bashing cartoon. There are very few cartoons about Biden and editors clearly want more.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 22, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (August 15th through August 22nd, 2020). As usual, no drawings of president Trump were among the most popular with newspaper editors. No cartoons about the Democratic Convention, Joe Biden or Kamala Harris got much ink. Steve Bannon’s arrest garnered some cartoons but got few reprints. Foreign cartoonists drawing about Belarus and the poisoning of a top Russian dissident were ignored by editors.

The top performing cartoons this week are a clear lesson in what editors want now: light cartoons about the tough times Americans live in. There are four pandemic/back-to-school cartoons on the list this week, which remains the most popular topic with editors, as it has been for the past three months.

The CagleCartoonists who are usually the most reprinted were again the most reprinted this week. Congratulations to the four cartoonists who each have two cartoons in the Top Ten, Dave Whamond (#1 and #8), Jeff Koterba (#2 and #4), Steve Sack (#5 and #9) and Dave Granlund (#5 and #7).  And kudos to the two other cartoonists who made the most reprinted list this week, John Darkow and Adam Zyglis!

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.
