Top Ten Cartoons, June 2, 2022

After a gunman massacred 19 kids in a school in Uvalde, Texas, it’s not surprising to see a number of our shooting cartoons widely reprinted by news organizations. But what is surprising is the four most reprinted cartoons this week had nothing to do with country’s latest mass shooting – they touched on college graduation, inflation, and Memorial Day.

Peter Kuper’s cartoon about masks was also one of the most widely-reprinted cartoons this week, a sign that more than two years into the pandemic, COVID-19 still remains an important issue in the lives of readers.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1

Gary McCoy took the #1 most reprinted spot.

#2

Daryl Cagle (that’s me) took second place!

#3

Dave Granlund took third place!

#4

Dave Whamond nabbed 4th place too.

#5

Dave Granlund claims the five-spot with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#6

Kevin Siers came in sixth.

#7

Dick Wright nabs seventh place.

#8

Peter Kuper took 8th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#9

Adam Zyglis takes 9th place!

#10

John Darkow wraps it up at number ten with his second cartoon on the list.

Top Ten Cartoons, May 27, 2022

Another week has gone by, and the nation’s cartoonists remain locked in on the baby formula shortage impacting the country. The U.S. airlifted 70,000 pounds of baby formula from Europe over the weekend, and another flight is expected this week.

Inflation and the economy also remain ripe topics for cartoonists, with costs continuing to skyrocket and the price of gas surpassing record levels.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1

Pat Byrnes took the #1 most reprinted spot.

#2

John Darkow took second place.

#3

Daryl Cagle (that’s me) took third place!

#4

RJ Matson nabbed 4th place too.

#5

Dick Wright claims the five-spot.

#6

Dave Whamond came in sixth.

#7

Christopher Weyant also nabs seventh place.

#8

Guy Parsons took 8th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#9

John Darkow takes 9th place!

#10

RJ Matson wraps it up at number ten with his second cartoon on the list.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – May 29, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending May 29th, 2021.

Congratulations to Bill Day for drawing the #1 most reprinted cartoon of the week!  And a hearty congrats to Dick Wright in second place. And Kudos to the other cartoonists in the Top Ten: Pat Bagley, Jeff Koterba, Ed Wexler, Bruce Plante, John Darkow, Dave Granlund, Dave Whamond and RJ Matson.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

The Most Popular Cartoons of the Month, May 2020

Here are the most popular cartoons of the month of May, 2020. Regular readers of my blog and newsletter will have seen all of these cartoons in our weekly roundups of the Top Ten Most Popular cartoons. Our Top Ten is a measure of how many of our subscribing newspaper editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. The list clearly shows that newspaper editors have been looking for cartoons about the lighter side of the pandemic.

I’d like to keep these lists to only ten cartoons, but this month we had a three way tie for the 10th place cartoon so there are 12 cartoons on the list. Out of the top 12, a whopping five cartoons are by Jeff Koterba of The Omaha World-Herald (Jeff sneaked two of those into the tie for 10th place). The #1 cartoon is by Steve Sack of The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. I had two cartoons on the list myself. Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this month, RJ Matson, Nate Beeler, Dave Granlund and Randy Enos.

20% of the cartoonists get 80% of the sales and reprints, and most of the cartoonists never make it into the Top Ten.  If you don’t like the Top Ten, take it up with your local newspaper editor. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – May 23, 2020

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (May 16 -May 23).

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – May 9, 2020

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (May 2 -May 9).

The big winners this week are Jeff Koterba of The Omaha World Herald and Canadian cartoon maestro, Dave Whamond, each with three cartoons in the top ten. These are the cartoons that are chosen by most newspapers editors to be reprinted on their editorial pages. If you don’t like the top ten, take it up with your local newspaper editor. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#2

The second most popular cartoon of the week is by Canadian cartoonist Dave Whamond, who also has three cartoons in the top ten this week.

#3

The most third most popular is my own graduation cartoon. I haven’t been drawing many cartoons lately as I’ve been spending most of my time on business stuff, keeping things going with all the pandemic chaos going on and a surge in hacker attacks. I know I should pick up the pace. See the Daryl Cagle cartoon archive on Cagle.com.

#4

We have a tie for the fourth most popular cartoon, here’s Dave Granlund.

#4

The other cartoon in a fourth place tie is this one from Jeff Koterba.

#6

Coronavirus Graduation

Here’s my new cartoon, on graduation with social distancing. The scene of a graduation with masks and grads, standing on the lawn, at least six feet apart, amused me, but what’s really happening is the graduation ceremonies are being cancelled, which isn’t so funny.

Drawing this made my mind wander back to past graduation cartoons.  This graduate lemmings cartoon harkens back to 2008 when there were no jobs for grads. It would be just as true today, if the grads were sitting at home watching TV and falling off a cliff, but I can’t think of how to draw that.

This old student debt cartoon seems to still be good year after year, and seems to be a yahtzee.

Here’s an old TRUE! graduation cartoon that I drew 25 years ago.
