Big Freeze and ICE: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Let it snow?

While I’m here enjoying the warm weather in California, most of the eastern U.S. has been buried under the snow for going on a week.

Our most-reprinted cartoon this week is a funny one by John Darkow, employing Punxsutawney Phil in an attempt to predict an early spring.

Editors also enjoyed Dave Whamond’s cartoon mixing the cold weather with the public’s growing distrust of ICE. I got a kick out of Dave Granlund’s cartoon, about how we all devolve into cavemen when a few flakes hit the ground.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. John Darkow

#2. Harley Schwadron

#3. Dave Whamond

#4. Dave Whamond

#5. Jonathan Brown

#6. Sean Delonas

#7. Bob Englehart

#8. Dave Granlund

#9. John Darkow

#10. Chris Weyant

No Invasion for Greenland: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Thank goodness we’re not going to invade Greenland. Now that’s a sentence I never thought I’d have to write.

At Davos, President Trump took military action off the table in his quixotic quest to take Greenland from Denmark. After all his bluster, the agreement he came to with NATO is eerily similar to the one that’s been in place for decades.

John Darkow’s well-timed cartoon about Trump’s obsession with Greenland was our most-reprinted cartoon of the week. Jonathan Brown’s cartoon about Congress refusing to call out Trump’s wild island-threatening crusade was also popular among editors.

Expect to see this list dominated by winter storm cartoons next week, with tons of snow forecast to fall across a large chunk of the country. At least for a few days, Washington will seem like Greenland.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. John Darkow

#2. Dave Granlund

#3. Pat Bagley

#4. Dave Granlund

#5. Jonathan Brown

#6. R.J. Matson

#7. Chris Weyant

#8. Dick Wright

#9. John Darkow

#10. Daryl Cagle

The ugly ICE news also motivated me to do a Caglecast with 131 of our best ICE editorial cartoons. This one is a “must see.” Come take a look.

No One’s Listening: Top 10 Must-See Political Cartoons Exposing the Government Shutdown Chaos!

As the government shutdown enters its sixth week, Republicans and Democrats don’t seem much closer to a solution both sides can agree on.

As Bob Englehart notes in his popular cartoon this week, we’re not listening to one another. The loudest, harshest voices dominate the discussion, with one side yelling at the other, as Gary McCoy depicted in his funny toon.

Hopefully the sweeping Election Night Democrats had this week loosens things up in Washington so a deal can get done before planes start falling from the sky. Our cartoonists don’t seem too optimistic about that.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Bob Englehart

#2. John Darkow

We have a great new Caglecast podcast about Trump’s impending attack on Venezuela and it’s crooked president, Nicolas Maduro – with two great cartoonists, Taylor Jones and Arcadio Esquivel. #4. Gary McCoy

Tariffs and debt: Top ten cartoons of the week

Trying to keep up with news out of Trump’s White House is a Herculean task even the nation’s top cartoons have a hard time pulling off.

Chris Weyant touched on the madness in our most-reprinted cartoon this week, which features a dizzy trade representative nauseous over the administration’s ever-changing tariffs.

R.J. Matson’s cartoon about the national debt, appropriately represented by the Grand Canyon, hit Trump as he tries to push his “big, beautiful” budget bill through the Senate. His former billionaire buddy Elon Musk isn’t helping by calling the bill a “disgusting abomination,” in part because it’s projected to add trillions of dollars to the federal debt.

After their recent dust up, you’ll see plenty of Musk vs. Trump cartoons in the coming days. For now, here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

#2. R.J. Matson

We have a great new Caglecast with 135 cartoons of Trump as an animal –with expert commentary from our top Trump-as-an-animal cartoonists, Adam Zyglis, Dave Whamond and Bill Day. Come watch!

Anxious America: Top ten cartoons of the week

I’m sorry! I forgot to post the Top Ten of the week last week –so here it is. And I’ll have a new one in the next couple of days.

Nearly all our most-reprinted cartoons last week touch on some impact Trump’s Washington is having on folks. The most-popular was Dave Whamond’s Easter-themed cartoon about the sky-high price of eggs, which have only gone up since Trump took office. But I also loved Rick McKee’s cartoon about a couple on a picnic happy because their cartoon had nothing to do with Trump.

If only we could all live in such bliss.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week – starting with #10:

#10. Pat Bagley

Easter led the top cartoons a week ago, but the big story right now is the passing of Pope Francis. We did a special podcast with 125 Pope Francis cartoons and a discussion with cartoonist Taylor Jones who drew a whole lot of cartoons about the Pope. Come watch, this is a great one.

#1. Dave Whamond

#2. John Darkow

#3. Rick McKee

#4. Dave Granlund

#5. R.J. Matson

#6. Chris Weyant

#7. Dave Whamond

#8. Dave Granlund

DOGE CUTS: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

IRS agents. VA workers. Park rangers. Air traffic controllers. Social Security administrators. No one employed by the federal government appears safe with Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency waiving a chainsaw across Washington.

Our top two most-reprinted cartoons of the week come from Chris Weyant, and both mock Musk’s blunt and mistake-prone process of trimming the size of the federal workforce. I also enjoyed Jeff Koterba’s cartoon about astronauts returning home after being stuck on the International Space Station, only to find a “Planet of the Apes” scenario playing out in the U.S.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Gulf of Whatever: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Editors love holiday cartoons, so it’s no surprise a number of clever Valentine’s Day cartoons topped our most-reprinted list this week.

Dave Whamond went with the candy heart approach, filling them with phrases that sum up the current environment in Washington. Bob Englehart went with the gift of a dozen eggs in his popular cartoon, a pricey extravagance these days anyone would take over a box of chocolates.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Whamond

DEBATE DREAD: Top Ten Cartoons

Our list of the most-reprinted cartoons was a real smorgasbord this week, with topics ranging from the increasing role of artificial intelligence to the collapse of Red Lobster. I particularly enjoyed Bob Englehart’s cartoon about the tough needle cartoonists need to thread these days to make it onto the opinion page.

Editors loved Chris Weyant’s cartoon about next month’s presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Though I don’t think CNN will be promoting it as “The Geezer vs. The Sleazer.”

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

Impeachment Insanity – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Congress is back in session, and Republicans are focusing their efforts on an impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden, despite the last of evidence linking him to the business dealings of his son, Hunter.

Complicating matters is the need for Congress to pass a spending bill to prevent a government shutdown, which could happen as soon as the end of next week. It all may be bad for the country, but at least it’s allowing cartoonists to create some funny and pointed work.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Pumpkin Spice – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

It’s the middle of September, or as it’s become known across the U.S. – pumpkin spice season.

That’s when everything from coffee to Oreos to scented candles roll out pumpkin spice-flavored versions of their favorite products. At the top of the list is the Pumpkin Spice Latte, which turns 20 this year after being introduced by Starbucks in 2003.

Rick McKee’s cartoon about our obsession with all thinks pumpkin was easily our most reprinted cartoon this week. Here are the rest of our top ten reprinted cartoons of the week:

The Most Popular Cartoons of the Month, May 2020

Here are the most popular cartoons of the month of May, 2020. Regular readers of my blog and newsletter will have seen all of these cartoons in our weekly roundups of the Top Ten Most Popular cartoons. Our Top Ten is a measure of how many of our subscribing newspaper editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. The list clearly shows that newspaper editors have been looking for cartoons about the lighter side of the pandemic.

I’d like to keep these lists to only ten cartoons, but this month we had a three way tie for the 10th place cartoon so there are 12 cartoons on the list. Out of the top 12, a whopping five cartoons are by Jeff Koterba of The Omaha World-Herald (Jeff sneaked two of those into the tie for 10th place). The #1 cartoon is by Steve Sack of The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. I had two cartoons on the list myself. Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this month, RJ Matson, Nate Beeler, Dave Granlund and Randy Enos.

20% of the cartoonists get 80% of the sales and reprints, and most of the cartoonists never make it into the Top Ten.  If you don’t like the Top Ten, take it up with your local newspaper editor. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!
