Rivers Retires

Our anonymous, conservative cartoonist, Rivers, has retired. Here’s the cartoon that Rivers drew to announce his retirement.

Rivers was controversial for for his far-right views, generating much of the angry email we receive, along with “cancel culture” demands that we drop him from our line up.

Rivers was more controversial among some other cartoonists for his choice to draw anonymously under a pen name, an unusual choice for an American cartoonist, but a choice that didn’t bother me, and didn’t seem to bother editors or readers (it was his right-wing views that bothered many readers and editors).

Rivers has at least one liberal fan – me! I’m leaving the door open for Rivers to draw occasional cartoons in the future, so don’t be surprised if a new and disturbing Rivers cartoon pops up.  Here are some of Rivers‘ recent cartoons.

I Just Did My First Cartoon in Procreate

Here is my first try at doing a cartoon in Procreate.

It is my first steps.  Like a baby picture.  I’ve been getting my arm twisted by my son and a bunch of my artists to get off of Photoshop and my desktop Mac, and move to Procreate on an iPad.  Here’s a detail.

My son, Buster, is doing all of his art on the iPad now, as are many of the CagleCartoonists. Some of them brag about how little time it takes them to color their cartoons. Rivers, our anonymous, conservative cartoonist is an example – he draws his cartoons alarmingly quickly in Procreate.

Rivers‘ linework is wonderful.  He created his own “pen” for Procreate, that he shared with me and has been encouraging me to use. It is a lovely “pen” but I’m not there yet. I didn’t draw this cartoon in Procreate, I only painted it on the iPad and drew it in pencil on paper.  I know.  I’m late coming to this, and it took a lot of nagging to get me here, and this first one was a struggle – but I see that I have to do it.

I used watercolor brushes for this one, and it really does look like watercolor. Everyone can witness my next, painful baby steps with my next cartoons.  (I cringe looking at this one.)  If drawing cartoons was easier and faster, I would draw more cartoons, which is something I really should be doing.

There’s a lot I give up with Procreate. I like CMYK and true black lines on the K channel.  Procreate doesn’t do that, and a lot of the things that Photoshop does easily are a challenge in Procreate. Still, gotta do it.

Here’s one from Rivers done in Procreate with his lovely pen.

Here’s one from Pat Bagley, drawn in Procreate, with his charming “carpenter’s pencil” lines.

Here’s a lovely, bloody oldie from the great Steve Sack, all done in Procreate.

DEBT DEAL: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

After months of brinksmanship, House Republicans and President Joe Biden came together raise the debt ceiling and avert an economic calamity. Republicans got some of the cuts they wanted, Biden kept most of his economic policies intact, and editors got a flood of debt ceiling cartoons.

The bad news? Cartoonists will be back drawing more debt ceiling cartoons in 2025… unless we’re all replaced by AI.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Conservatives Gary McCoy and Rivers – Drawing Amongst Liberals

On this week’s Caglecast we’re joined by two of our most conservative cartoonists, Gary McCoy who also draws two comic strips, “The Duplex” and “The Flying McCoys”; and Rivers, who draws anonymously and joins us with a disguise and an altered voice.

The vast majority of editorial cartoonists are liberal so the few, conservative cartoonists stand out as unusual, and often stand alone voicing ideas that seldom find their way into general circulation newspapers; Gary and Rivers are among the best among the few conservative cartoonists, and they talk about living in a world of liberal editors which includes their liberal editor who is hosting the podcast, me, Daryl Cagle.

Gary and Rivers show lots of their favorite cartoons, they enjoy denigrating Dr. Anthony Fauci; they deny the efficacy of COVID vaccines; they complain about the ignorance of liberals who watch MSNBC; they let us know that we wouldn’t have this war in Ukraine now if Trump was in office; they tell us about how the insurrection wasn’t an insurrection at all, and how most of the MAGA folks on January 6th were out for a peaceful stroll.

We could have titled this “Cartoons from the Bizarro Dimension.”  …but we love Gary and Rivers. Really, we do.  Here are a few of the images that are discussed in the video.
