Rembrandt Oldie

This cartoon about the Republican Senate fail on Trumpcare is based on an oldie from Rembrandt titled,”The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.”

This is actually a double-oldie as I drew this one years ago when Obama beat Mitt Romney, much to the horror of Republicans who then had an “autopsy” to figure out how they could have possibly lost. Their autopsy informed them that they should cultivate Hispanic voters – an idea that seems like a quaint, old-fashioned notion for today’s Trumpy Republicans. I thought it was also a good fit for the current Trumpcare debate in the Senate, so I dusted it off with some new wording.

The original is below. I think Rembrandt would have made a good editorial cartoonist.

Talking Trump

I enjoyed watching the coverage of former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony in congress on Fox News, where the talk was all about Hillary’s emails and Benghazi. I’ve noticed that this is a pattern; when the Trump-bashing gets heavy, conservatives retreat into their “happy place” of Hillary (and to a lesser degree, Obama) bashing.

There isn’t a lot of depth to the Republican responses to each increment of Trumpocalypse news. I see it in my e-mail now, when conservatives complain about the Trump cartoons they often ask why we don’t have an equal number of Hillary-bashing cartoons – even though Hillary is defeated and gone.

Republican Healthcare Poop

Today we saw the TrumpCare/RyanCare Repeal and Replace bill go down in flames – or poop. Here’s my cartoon.

This is based on a cartoon I drew in 2009 when President Obama and the Democrats were pushing Obamacare through Congress.

Want to see me draw this one in real time? Check out the video below …

And here’s the video of me coloring the cartoon in Adobe Photoshop on my Wacom Cintiq …

Republicans: Repeal and Replace!

The Democrats worked on passing Obamacare for a year and we got lots of cartoons with the medical symbol, the caduseus. Republicans don’t have so much time to plan, they are swallowing healthcare whole without chewing – and it is caduceus time all over again! Here’s my Republican healthcare debate cartoon …

I drew this as a live-stream on Twitch. See me in the video below as I start with a blank sheet of paper and no layout in mind.

The next video show me coloring this one, along with tomorrow’s cartoon about Trump and Twitter …

The Sky is Falling!

We hear from editors who want more “pro-Trump” cartoons – but editorial cartoons are a negative art form. Cartoons that support anything are lousy cartoons. And there are few conservative cartoonists to begin with. I drew what could be considered a “pro-Trump” cartoon below.

I think this is about as close as we’re going to get to “pro-Trump” cartoons over the next four years – cartoons that bash third parties, like crybaby Democrats or media bashing cartoons like mine.

I drew this one as a live stream on Twitch.tv – you can watch in the videos below. The first one shows me doing the rough sketch and final line art …

And the next video shows me coloring the cartoon in Photoshop …

New Cartoonist: Ed Wexler

I’m happy to announce that we’ve added a new editorial cartoonist to Cagle.com and our newspaper syndication package – Ed Wexler. Here’s Ed’s first syndicated editorial cartoon …

In this stodgy old profession it is rare to see new face that looks so polished. Ed has been a creative director at Disney Television for decades and the recent caucus politics inspired his leap to the editorial pages. Ed also had a long stint as an illustrator of US News and World Report (replacing our own Taylor Jones). Here are a few of my favorite Wexler oldies. The first is Reince Priebus surfing with his GOP buddies …

Ed draws everything on his Wacom tablet. Here’s our new Energy Secretary, Rick Perry …

Here’s Washington in action …

Looks a little like Ed Sorel, huh? Wexler studied under Sorel at Cooper Union. This Ronald Reagan portrait impressed me …

Cool stuff. Welcome aboard, Ed!

Trump Victory HORROR!

From my perch in blue California the horror at Trump’s election is everywhere, from middle and high schools emptying each days as the kids protest and as protesters block the 101 freeway near here. There is a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth.

trump-horror750

People are asking me what to expect from editorial cartoons in the Trump years. I suspect that we’ll be in for four years of the same kind of cartoons we saw in the campaign. We’ll certainly see Trump hair placed on every imaginable monument and metaphor. The Trump reaction cartoons have been pouring in, with some obvious Yahtzees like Trump hair on the world globe. There are lots of cartoons showing the White House as a skyscraper or with Trump signage. And lots of Trump monsters – in facts a lot of the Trump victory response cartoons are just like the Trump bashing cartoons we saw during the campaign. It isn’t hard to predict that this will never end. That said, there are some great ones on Cagle.com! Here are a few that I enjoyed that came in today and yesterday …

Our most conservative cartoonist, Sean Delonas drew this Trump protester cartoon that made me laugh. (The dog is funny.)

This Bagley cartoon is wordy fun.

This Sack cartoon made me laugh out loud.

Ceiling of Support – and Rembrandt

With election day two days away, as pools tighten up, it still looks like Donald Trump is bumping his head on a hard ceiling of support. I suppose this cartoon could be a post-mortem to run on Wednesday, after Hillary wins. I expect to get a blast of cartoons predicting the outcome for newspaper who need a quick option when the election results come in on Tuesday night; some cartoonists will surely draw different versions of different outcomes – I’m working on that now.

This cartoon is inspired by another cartoon I drew some years ago about the debt ceiling, with a Republican elephant. (I like pogo sticks.)

Debt ceilings, ceilings of support – those darn ceilings keep coming back to bite Republicans.

Here’s another oldie that I updated in anticipation of Hillary winning the election. I drew this one in 2012 about the “Republican Autopsy” after Mitt Romney’s defeat. I draw just like Rembrandt, huh?  Things don’t change much.

The NRA and the Republican Doggie!

Since the Orlando massacre there has been talk on the left about gun control, while the right seems unmoved by arguments to limit assault weapons or ban sales of guns to people on the “no-fly” list. It isn’t hard to see why.

I like the image of the NRA as a pig in a business suit – much the same image that I often use for Wall Street. The pig is a symbol of greed and the NRA is all about money and self interest around their gun issues. Here’s another one with NRA piggies that I drew some time ago.

and here’s another one …

My pigs are influenced by my old Muppet days and I guess I have a pig style that some people see as too similar to my elephants. Whenever I draw pigs in cartoons I’ll get an e-mail from somebody who thinks my pig is a short snouted elephant – some people must suffer from pig-blindness.

The videos of my drawing the new NRA piggy and doggie are below. Note that I ran into a problem with Photoshop when I tried to put in the image of the $100 bill. I thought using a $100 bill was funny and enhanced the message of the cartoon; it created a natural, visual focal point drawing the eye up to the money. Its all about the money. Photoshop blocks images of bank notes as a barrier to counterfeiters, and this has been a problem for me with past cartoons. In the videos you’ll see me struggle with this again. I use money scans rarely enough that I always forget how I worked around it the last time. You’ll see me struggle a bit and figure it out in the video.

Here I am drawing the piggy/doggie cartoon …

and here I am coloring the piggy/doggie cartoon …

Defending the Convention Rules

I have to agree with Donald Trump’s criticism of the Republican party rules. It has been interesting to hear the establishment Republican defense, from Paul Ryan, Reince Priebus and other flacks; I think that all of these arguments could just as appropriately come from the mouth of lil Kim Jong Un.

Watch me drawing this one in the video below!

The Party of Lincoln!

I imagine that the grandpa of the Republican Party, the Party of Lincoln, would respond to the current Republican primaries like this.

Watch me draw this one in real time in the video below. This one was a quickie.
