Dangerous data centers: Top ten cartoons of the week

With tech companies squeezing A.I.-powered tools into every product they can, energy-hungry data centers are popping up across the country to provide the necessary processing power.

Our most popular cartoon this week, from the pen of John Cole, visualizes the problem with a giant yellow bird putting pressure on the power grid. Pat Bagley also drew a popular data center cartoon focused on a real farmer’s fear.

Otherwise, the focus continues to be on high prices. Can’t A.I. do something about that?

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. John Cole

#2. Milt Priggee

Summer and AI: Top ten cartoons of the week

While it’s never really quiet with Trump in office, the summer does provide some relief from the relentless pace of news.

Without politics in the forefront, two topics dominated our list of the most-reprinted cartoons this week – the continued expansion of AI and the overwhelming heat.

I enjoyed John Darkow’s popular cartoon about AI, which featured classic robots from Lost in Space and The Twilight Zone. John’s funny cartoon about the scorching temperatures also topped our list, focused on a man who asked about the heat one too many times.

But our most-reprinted cartoon of the week by far, drawn by Dave Granlund, focused on the increasing cost of health care in the U.S. Can’t we get AI to fix that?

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Granlund

#2. John Darkow

DEBATE DREAD: Top Ten Cartoons

Our list of the most-reprinted cartoons was a real smorgasbord this week, with topics ranging from the increasing role of artificial intelligence to the collapse of Red Lobster. I particularly enjoyed Bob Englehart’s cartoon about the tough needle cartoonists need to thread these days to make it onto the opinion page.

Editors loved Chris Weyant’s cartoon about next month’s presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Though I don’t think CNN will be promoting it as “The Geezer vs. The Sleazer.”

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Chris Weyant

TEENS and SCREENS: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

Addicted to screens? You’re not alone – according to recent studies, upwards of half of all Americans who own a smartphone display addictive behavior.

But that’s also nothing new. As Dave Whamond points out in his popular cartoon this week, people were addicted to their television screens when phones were still devices attached to the wall.

Maybe that’s why so many people flocked to see the northern lights, supercharged this year by massive solar flares. As Jeff Koterba points out, it’s a rare moment where people from across the political spectrum can enjoy something together. Or maybe they’re just sick of their phones

Angry A.I. Celebrities!

We have a great new Caglecast (video podcast) with our brilliant CagleCartoonist, Rick McKee, who created a bunch of angry celebrities with Artificial Intelligence. Take a look!  It is funny.

And it is disturbing, because A.I. is generating stuff that is good, and it threatens witty, talented people in fields from editorial cartooning to the writers who are on strike in Hollywood.

Just for now, it makes me laugh to see people who we have never seen get angry, getting very angry.  Here are some examples.  And watch the video where we discuss all things A..I. with Rick, and later with Rivers and Andy Singer.

Abraham Lincoln usually has no expression at all.

And Mr. Rogers –it would take a lot to make him angry.

We never saw Stan Lee angry, but maybe we weren’t looking hard enough.

Lots of folks were mad at Jimmy Carter, but we never saw him get mad back at us –even when we got a ticket for driving over 55 on the freeway.

Watch the Caglecast, and like and SUBSCRIBE on YouTube –or visit our archives and watch on Caglecast.com.
