Trump’s Stinky Quote

I was away at the cartoonists convention in France when Trump’s Access Hollywood tape came out. It always happens that when I’m away I really want to draw a cartoon! So, excuse this one being late, but it is still what everyone is talking about.

Does this fart-face cartoon look familiar? Remember my entry in Iran’s Holocaust Cartoon Contest a while back?

I liked this cartoon, and those darn Iranian folks didn’t choose to include it in their exhibition, so there weren’t many people who saw it – the perfect excuse to dust off this classic for Donald Trump!

Trump in the Toilet

Trump looks like he is spinning down the tubes. I wasn’t sure that this cartoon would work, since it is rather odd, and there may not be room for his body under his head in the toilet … but maybe there is. I think the fun part of this is the swirl of hair at the top.

Last week when I was at the big editorial cartooning festival in St Just le Martel, France, I was in a “cartoon fight” against a Romanian cartoonist named “Clear,” who wore his vampire cape. They built a boxing ring and had big easels for us. The theme was Trump and I drew The Donald grabbing the Statue of Liberty’s “pussy” – an image I was sure would be the Yahtzee of the week. I think the nicest Liberty-“pussy” cartoon is this one at the right by Alen Lauzan from Chile.

I’ll post more on the convention in France soon! And when I get over the euro-cold I brought back with me I’ll start live-streaming cartoons again – stay tuned.

Presidential Debate Garbage

I’ve been hearing a lot about how Hillary Clinton won the first presidential debate, but it seemed to me that there was plenty of garbage and spin from each candidate, so I drew this …

I could call it “trash talking.” I live tweeted during the debate and got a lot of response on Twitter (@dcagle). I should do that more often. Maybe next time.

I notice that the stage at the debate was the same stage they used for presidential debates years ago. I suppose it packs up nicely and keeps well in storage. I don’t see much reason for that strange eagle logo, but I wanted to put them on the right stage so that the only change was their garbage can lecterns. I don’t usually do cartoons with dark backgrounds. Maybe I’m in a rut.

We didn’t see much of them on the stage. Almost all of the debate took place on a split screen, which adjusted for Donald Trump’s height advantage. I understand that the taller candidate almost always wins the election. Also, the zoomed closer on Hillary to make her head bigger and they turned down the color saturation on Trump, to make him look less orange. I love stagecraft.

Everyone is talking about the bait Hillary used to lure Trump into traps, and how Trump jumped to take the bait each time. I suppose that is interesting, but it struck me that this debate didn’t change many minds – fans of each candidate likely thought their own candidate won and I didn’t see anything new – just the same old garbage.

Swing-State Twister!

Here are Trump and Hillary playing swing-state Twister. I thought this would be a good one to send out the day before the first, big presidential debate.

Yes, i left out the yellow row on the Twister board – it was getting too complex.

This cartoon is a reworking of another Twister cartoon that I drew back in 2008 with Obama and Romney. It is interesting that the sing states were also the story in 2008, and the states haven’t changes much, except that now we add Pennsylvania and Georgia to the mix. When I drew the older cartoon I was thinking of both candidates being skinny – now both candidates are thick, and I had to rethink how I drew it – but I think the metaphor is still good. I have Hillary and Trump glaring at each other, where in 2008 Obama and Romnay seen oblivious to each other.

Oh! I didn’t forget the yellow row in 2008.

Voodoo Hillary!

With all the news last week about Hillary’s health reinforcing the alt-right narrative about Hillary being sick and secretive, I got to thinking about how Donald Trump might be spending his play time.

I wanted to make Trump look like a little kid, delighted with his toy, as he inflicts dark magical, medical horrors upon Hillary. Want to see me drawing this one in real time? Check it out in the video below.

Updated Oldies! Trump! Marijuana! Peace!

The problem with being a cartoonist who runs a little newspaper syndicate is that I have to actually run the little newspaper syndicate. I envy cartoonists who can work in their little cubicles, drawing cartoons all the time – as my life is sucked away with bookkeeping and administrative duties. Argh! On the other hand, by having a little business I’m safe from being laid off by a newspaper again. I’ve traded  having a boss for having dozens of cartoonists and freelancers depending on me to keep the business going. Again, argh!

So, I haven’t been drawing as many new cartoons as I would like during this busy political season. This week, while I was finishing up my belated business taxes, I dredged up a couple of oldies that seem fresh now. The first is a Muhammad cartoon-cartoon, updated to be a Trump cartoon that reflects the comments I get in my email box, from those “deplorables in a basket.” Here is what the cartoon originally looked like, at the right.

The second oldie this week is a repost of a California Marijuana oldie that I drew some years ago when California legalized medical marijuana. In November California votes on a referendum to legalize recreational marijuana, and the cartoon is suddenly fresh. What is old is new again.

In addition to the oldies, I drew a 10th birthday card for my friends at Cartooning for Peace. The big hands on star French cartoonist, Plantu’s dove logo, make me smile. That’s the Cartooning for Peace logo on the right, and my birthday card below. Happy birthday, Cartooning for Peace!

Roach Man!

My rock musician son, Michael “Mac” Cagle, asked me to do a cover for his new single, “Roach Man.” You can listen to more of my rocker son at Punkrockopera.bandcamp.com and download his whole album; his Facebook page is at facebook.com/punkrockoperaproject. And here’s a short MP3 clip from the Roach Man song, which is not yet completed:

That’s the Roach Man below.

Trump/Putin Bromance

Here’s the Donald giving a big bromance kiss to Vladimir Putin. They are both so strong. Mmm.

I futzed around  with this one before deciding on this close-up – you can watch my indecision in the video below.

In the next video, watch me coloring the kiss in Photoshop!

Another Cartoonist Position Retired – Randy Bish

My editorial cartoonist buddy, Randy Bish, recently retired from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the conservative paper in a rare two newspaper/two cartoonist town. Randy is the latest in a long line of cartoonists losing newspaper staff positions –where the newspaper doesn’t hire a new cartoonist.

Randy is a long time contributor to Cagle.com and PoliticalCartoons.com. Here is Randy’s post about leaving his position and a few of Randy’s cartoons – see Randy’s cartoon archive on Cagle.com

In the same year that “Back To The Future” was in theaters, the wreckage of the Titanic was discovered and Microsoft released Windows version 1.0, a young man from Walkchalk walked into the offices of the Tribune-Review to nervously start his first day as an editorial cartoonist.

It was March 11, 1985, and I was that nervous young man.

Since that day, the world has changed in so many ways.

bish3 bish2

Two space shuttles (Challenger, Columbia) and their crews were lost. An American president was impeached.

An iPhone was invented. The nation was gripped by a court trial when a famous athlete, accused of killing his wife, was found not guilty. On a September morning, terrorists took down four airliners and two towers.

During these years, I’ve had the honor of drawing five American presidents.
(six, if you count the drawings that I did of Jimmy Carter back when I worked for the Valley News Dispatch)
I’ve drawn every crooked politician from the time when they worked in Harrisburg or Washington until the time when they went to prison.

In my time at the Trib, I’ve been blessed to have been able to meet the people who were my heroes. One of the saddest parts of my job was having to be the one to draw memorial cartoons of the heroes that we have lost. My salutes to the people who have left their marks on our world became some of the most popular cartoons among readers. To this day, I still have people who ask for copies of my tribute to Snoopy cartoonist Charles Schulz.

I’ve seen my cartoons travel across the world, going to places that I never could have imagined. They’ve been reprinted in textbooks in Europe and found homes in museums. The mother of an American soldier once told me the story of how her son made a poster-sized copy of a cartoon that I had drawn of Saddam Hussein. When the soldier’s unit entered one of Hussein’s palaces, the young man hung the cartoon across the headboard of Saddam’s bed.

My time here at the Tribune-Review will end after September 9, when I will leave to pursue other interests.

I’ve been fortunate to have worked with some great people in the past and blessed incredibly with all of you who have read my cartoons through the years, whether in the paper or online. And now, as I face a new chapter in my life, I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Any man who can spend over 30 years of his life doing the things that he loves to do is a lucky man.

I cannot begin to tell you just how much your friendship and your support has meant to me.

You have all made my world a better place, and for that, I thank you.

Screwed by the EpiPen!

With so many Trump and Hillary cartoons, for so long, we’ve had a nice, refreshing break with the Mylan EpiPen pricing scandal. There have been a lot of these cartoons as the story is so outrageous, jacking the price of EpiPen from $100 to $600, screwing hundreds of thousands of people who suffer from severe allergies to common threats like peanuts and bee stings. The drug company, Mylan, raised the salary of their CEO by millions and, in response to criticism, introduced a new “generic” version of their EpiPen for “only” $300.

We have a great collection of EpiPen cartoons! Come take a look!

Watch me draw this cartoon in real time in the YouTube video below – and in the video below that, watch me color the cartoon in Adobe Photoshop on my Wacom Cintiq.

Trump’s Trip to Mexico

Donald Trump made a surprise trip to Mexico today. He is rather unpopular in Mexico, which led me to draw this cartoon featuring Mexico’s famous Angel of Independence statue reacting to Trump’s greeting.

trumpMexico

The Angel of Independence in Mexico City is the scene of frequent political protests and is an icon in Mexico like the Statue of Liberty is to us. One of my favorite cartoonists in Mexico, Angel Boligan, draws the Angel often, and I thought I would post a few – here she is in one that Boligan calls “Sin City”

And here she is as a cigarette …

Here she’s replaced by the police.

And in this one, she seems to have lost her motivation – or found new motivation …

We Added a New and Old Cartoonist

One of my favorite cartoonists has rejoined our CagleCartoons.com newspaper syndication package this week. Cuban cartoonist, Alen Lauzán, who emigrated to Chile and works from Santiago. Alan uses no words in his cartoons and has a wonderful, illustrative style. He’s back after eight years away. Welcome back Alen!

No cartoonist in Cuba has ever drawn Fidel Castro – but ex-patriot Cubans draw Fidel all the time! Here’s a great Fidel as Freddy Krueger that Alen drew back in 2008.

Alan likes to draw cartoons about technology, usually combining the old with the new, like this one …

Here’s Lauzon’s take on Liberty …
