Top Ten Cartoons of the WEEK!

This week in Washington, one of the big news stories was a fight between Donald Trump and the Associated Press over whether it’s called the Gulf of Mexico or the Gulf of America.

Our most popular cartoon of the week was drawn by Bob Englehart, and features a GPS overwhelmed by the Gulf of American and all the other new names Trump is throwing out there.

I contributed by drawing a cartoon about a depressed student being forced to write “Gulf of America” over and over again on the chalkboard. On some level, it feels like most of us are being punished.

Gulf of Whatever: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Editors love holiday cartoons, so it’s no surprise a number of clever Valentine’s Day cartoons topped our most-reprinted list this week.

Dave Whamond went with the candy heart approach, filling them with phrases that sum up the current environment in Washington. Bob Englehart went with the gift of a dozen eggs in his popular cartoon, a pricey extravagance these days anyone would take over a box of chocolates.

The Trump show: Top ten cartoons of the week

Welcome back to the Trump show!

It’s been a dizzying few days, with Trump issuing executive orders on everything from immigration to crypto. Some people are exhausted, as Dave Whamond illustrated in this week’s most-reprinted cartoon.

I also enjoyed Jeff Koterba’s cartoon, which features Trump on the edge of a cliff (with his trademark giant red tie) making a show of unity to Democrats. Jeff had a busy week – he drew four of our 10 most-reprinted cartoons on a number of topics, including TikTok and a ceasefire in Gaza, news that appeared to get lost in the wall-to-wall coverage of all things Trump. Get used to it.

Top Cartoons of the Week! Fire and Ice!

While Donald Trump’s inauguration is next week, America’s focus has been out west, as deadly fires continue to burn around Los Angeles.

At least 27 people have been killed by the fires, while thousands have been evacuated. Countless lives have been impacted by the destruction, which early estimates say could cost hundreds of billions of dollars.

One of our most-reprinted cartoons on the fire was Jeff Koterba’s touching tribute to the first responders, volunteers, and donors who are selflessly helping their fellow citizens in a moment of need. It’s hard to be critical in the middle of a disaster, but I did appreciate R.J. Matson’s cartoon about the blame game going on in Los Angeles, pegged around fire hydrants lacking water during the initial stages of the fire.

Top Ten of the Week: Fire and Ice!

In the lull between New Year’s and Trump’s inauguration, our most-reprinted cartoons of the week covered a hodgepodge of topics, everything from misinformation to annoying snow to exploding cybertrucks.

Our most popular cartoon this week came from the pen of Chris Weyant, who used recent winter weather to mock Congress over its long history of not living up to its promises.

Adam Zyglis had two cartoons in our top five. One was a look at the devolution of Facebook into X, while the other was a sympathetic look at the tragedy in New Orleans following a New Year’s Day attack.

Washington Post Kills a Cartoon, Cartoonist Resigns – Good for Her

I’ve been impressed with the news coverage generated by cartoonist, Ann Telnaes’ impactful resignation from her gig at the Washington Post. Her resignation and statement made her point loudly and effectively about the disturbing influence that billionaires, who are sympathetic to Trump, like the WA Post’s Jeff Bezos and LA Times’ Patrick Soon-Shiong, have on media that we’ve traditionally been able to trust.
Perhaps one resignation is worth a thousand cartoons. Too bad you can only resign once.

The Post’s editorial page editor claims he killed the cartoon because it has similar subject matter to an article he planned to print in the future, and not because of criticism of Trump and the Post’s billionaire owner (not an argument that seems to carry much weight with the cartoonists).

My Newsletter to Our Cartoonists

Today I thought I would share today’s email newsletter that I sent to our cartoonists. Every week I send them a graph of the most reprinted cartoons of the week, and news about their royalty payments and other syndicate stuff that only cartoonists should be worried about.  –Daryl

Hi Cartoonists,

Payments
The last royalty payments to the USA cartoonists went in the mail on December 31st; you should be receiving them now. Payments for the 4th quarter of 2024 will go out to the international cartoonists soon. We’ll do the 1099s in about two weeks.

New Podcast: Most Popular/Most Reprinted Cartoons of 2024
Our new podcast is a master class in what editors want. I discuss the 35 most reprinted cartoons of the year with our two cartoonists who dominated reprints in syndication last year, Jeff Koterba and Chris Weyant. See it here: https://youtu.be/SZ42XoU6eUQ

Supply isn’t a good match for demand in editorial cartoons. Think of our syndicate like a store that contains thousands of products for sale, of which almost all the customers select only the same twenty products to buy. This podcast isn’t a judgement on which cartoons are good; it is only a judgement on which cartoons the editors wanted.

You’ll notice some commonalities in the cartoons that the demand side is looking for – funny cartoons that everyone can agree with that express commonly and widely held feelings about the news. Notice that there are no cartoons depicting Trump in the top 35, and no cartoons about news from outside the USA, aside from the Olympics and a couple of space aliens. Both conservative and liberal editors tend to select the same cartoons these days.

Congratulations to Jeff and Chris for their outstanding performance with editors last year. And congrats to the other cartoonists who drew their way into the most popular 35 cartoons last year, Dave Whamond, John Darkow, Rick McKee, Bob Englehart, Gary McCoy, Dave Granlund, RJ Matson, Adam Zyglis, Randy Enos and Guy Parsons. These cartoonists perform well with editors consistently.

Thanksgiving Wrap-up – Top 10 Cartoons

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and the least surprising development was the popularity of our turkey day cartoons.

Some cartoonists hate drawing holiday cartoons, but editors and readers clearly love them. Especially in a year where sweeping political change is heading towards Washington.

Rick McKee won the holiday, penning our three most popular cartoons of the week. Turns out lots of people were worried about politics ruining their feasts.

I also enjoyed Dave Granlund’s cartoon comparing the crowded conditions on the Mayflower with the congested roads of Thanksgiving today.

Daryl’s Best ELECTION DAY Cartoons!

Here are my favorite Election Day cartoons!  Go out and VOTE!

This is a pleasant daydream.

Here’s my new cartoon appreciating poll workers. I debated with myself whether to make them a bronze statue or just people raising the flag Iwo Jima style.

This is an oldie, revised from the cover of one of my Best Political Cartoons of the Year books. I changed it to be an election day cartoon.

Here’s a recent cartoon that was a popular one. I can stretch my mind and imagine why some doofus would vote for Trump; but I can’t imagine why anyone is undecided.

On election day. I’m sure everyone will be nice.

I do lots of old folks watching TV.

This one isgood for every election.

I drew this one about Republican efforts to disenfranchise black voters. It takes many forms.
