Tariffs and debt: Top ten cartoons of the week

Trying to keep up with news out of Trump’s White House is a Herculean task even the nation’s top cartoons have a hard time pulling off.

Chris Weyant touched on the madness in our most-reprinted cartoon this week, which features a dizzy trade representative nauseous over the administration’s ever-changing tariffs.

R.J. Matson’s cartoon about the national debt, appropriately represented by the Grand Canyon, hit Trump as he tries to push his “big, beautiful” budget bill through the Senate. His former billionaire buddy Elon Musk isn’t helping by calling the bill a “disgusting abomination,” in part because it’s projected to add trillions of dollars to the federal debt.

After their recent dust up, you’ll see plenty of Musk vs. Trump cartoons in the coming days. For now, here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Grim News: Top 10 Political Cartoons of the Week

Economic uncertainty. Continued inflation. Medicaid cuts. Crackdowns on universities across the country. The internet being filled with AI slop.

Boy, the new seems grim and relentless. Which is why Monte Wolverton’s cartoon about the search for a glimmer of good news struck a chord with editors this week, topping our list of the most-reprinted cartoons.

Jeff Koterba also tapped into the unease over the economy in a cartoon about the death of the penny, which shockingly costs almost 4 cents per penny to make. Unfortunately, they will only increase the need for nickels, which run 14 cents each. Add that to the list of depressing news items.

Big, beautiful bill: Top ten cartoons of the week

The Republicans in the House passed their “big, beautiful” budget this week, which has led to a lot of uncertainty among business owners and just about everyone else who doesn’t own a MAGA hat. Will it explode the deficit? Will it lead to a recession? Will the stock market crash?

Our most popular cartoon of the week came from the pen of Ed Wexler, who isn’t only one confused by the bill’s focus on spending cuts and borrowed money to help the wealthiest Americans the most.

R.J. Matson’s cartoon on the bill (and more specifically, Moody’s downgrade) got a chuckle from me. As did Chris Weyant’s cartoon about RFK Jr. inability to discern fantasy from reality.

AI Eye Tracking Mishaps under the Overlord, and 135 Hilarious Trump Animal Cartoons

I just posted a new Caglecast with 135 great cartoons depicting Trump as an animal. You can probably watch this without noticed that there’s something funny about our eyes. I tried using A.I. for the first time –oops!

One problem I have with these videos is that I’m a one-man-band video crew, looking at the monitors to switch views, select cartoons and make adjustments as we go along, so I turn my head left and right, and I look down, and I rarely stare blankly into the camera as I should do. I look distracted. So I tried a new A.I. gizmo that adjusts my gaze to look into the camera. I watched the beginning of the video as I turned my head from side to side, but my stare remained on the camera, and I thought it looked good. This is a feature of an editing program I use, called “Descript,” and they call their A.I. “Overlord.”

Then, after I posted the video on YouTube, and I looked a little more closely, I noticed my eyes would sometime dart around, at one point rolling up into my head; poor Adam Zyglis had a twitchy right eye, and at one point is cross eyed. And some cartoons are googley eyed too.

This cartoon by Bart van Leeuwen made me laugh, at 35:10 into the video, the A.I. Overlord animated the eyes on Trump and Biden and it looks pretty funny. Take a look.
At 44:47 into the video, this cartoon by Dave Granlund also gets strangely realistic, with moving eyes that reminded me of the mouths on the old Clutch Cargo show from 1960. I liked that show when I was five years old. It was creepy.

Even though you might think that Adam and I are occasionally having a stroke, I decided to leave this version of the video up without re-editing.  I won’t be using the Overlord again.

Cartoonists who keep their eyes focused on A.I. are getting other headaches now. Here’s a cartoon by Bob Englehart that was recently stolen and redrawn with AI.

A.I. and the Pope: Top ten cartoons of the week

It was a wild week filled with a lot of news, which included Pete Rose being posthumously unbanned from the Baseball Hall of Fame and Trump defended his decision to accept a $400 million luxury airplane from Qatar.

But our two most-popular cartoons of the week were on wildly different subjects – A.I. and the new pope.

Rick McKee drew our most-reprinted cartoon of the week, which featured a high school graduate’s dependence on ChatGPT, a popular A.I.-powered chatbot that can also create cartoons and steal jobs.

Our second-most reprinted cartoon was Pat Byrnes’ funny cartoon on Pope Leo XIV, the first-ever American pope whose Chicago origins became the fodder for some funny pieces of art.

Mother’s Day: Top ten cartoons of the week

Sunday is Mothers Day, in case you needed a reminder. So this week’s list of our most reprinted cartoons features a number of pieces celebrating the mothers of America.

But our most popular cartoon of the week was a poke against relentlessly high grocery store prices, drawn by John Darkow. I’m not optimistic things will get much cheaper anytime soon, especially with Trump’s tariffs on deck. That’s good for cartoonists and bad for everyone else.

Trade War Podcast Cartoons From and About China!

Trump’s economy: Top ten cartoons of the week

The U.S. economy shrank in the first quarter this year, but don’t blame Trump’s tariffs or all the uncertainly created by his administration during his first 100 days in office. No, according to Trump, this is still the economy of Joe Biden, who hasn’t been president for more than three months.

Our most-reprinted cartoon this week, drawn by Dave Granlund, shows a middle class family alongside other endangered species. Another popular economic cartoon came from Dave Whamond, who knew exactly where to put a cartoon of eggs in the jewelry store.

The Pope and pollen: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump generally dominates the headlines, but this week the news topics were all over the place, from taxes to far-off planets where scientists uncovered possible signs of life.

Our most-reprinted cartoon this week was Dave Granlund’s tribute to Pope Francis, who died this week at the age of 88. We had a number of cartoons about Francis, but Granlund’s depiction certainly struck a chord with editors.

Another popular cartoon was Dave Whamond’s funny take on pollen, proving once again everyone cares about the weather.

Anxious America: Top ten cartoons of the week

I’m sorry! I forgot to post the Top Ten of the week last week –so here it is. And I’ll have a new one in the next couple of days.

Nearly all our most-reprinted cartoons last week touch on some impact Trump’s Washington is having on folks. The most-popular was Dave Whamond’s Easter-themed cartoon about the sky-high price of eggs, which have only gone up since Trump took office. But I also loved Rick McKee’s cartoon about a couple on a picnic happy because their cartoon had nothing to do with Trump.

If only we could all live in such bliss.

Tariff turmoil: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump’s certainly left his mark on the global economy, with his global tariffs continuing to wreak havoc on markets across the world. Here in the U.S., Wall Street has become something of a rollercoaster ride, jumping and falling on every Truth Social post from the president

The interest in everything tariffs was evident this week, as nearly all of our most-reprinted cartoons were about Trump’s tax hike on imported goods. Our most popular cartoon, drawn by Ed Wexler, focused on the poor penguins in Antarctica unexpectedly hit by Trump’s tariffs.

Dave Whamond also drew a pair of popular tariff cartoons – a funny one featuring a keyboard warrior turned tax expert, and another mocking our dwindling 401(k)s. If you haven’t logged into your retirement account lately, don’t start now. I’d wait for all of Trump’s “winning” to kick in.

Education cuts: Top ten cartoons of the week

Donald Trump didn’t hide the fact he wanted to shutter the Department of Education while on the campaign trail. Now that he’s president, he’s trying to follow through, though he’ll ultimately need the help of Congress to kill the agency for good.

In the meanwhile, the Education Department announced it was slicing its workforce in half, and cuts could impact everything from student loans to Pell grants to programs like the Rural Education Achievement Program, which helps fun low-income schools in rural areas.

John Darkow’s funny cartoon about an angry kid who thinks school has been canceled because the Education Department is being closed was our most-reprinted cartoon of the week. I also enjoyed Dave Whamond’s cartoon, which used a March Madness bracket to predict with state would be the first to get rid of education entirely.
