Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 11 through July 18, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons. This week has the usual steep curve between the most popular cartoons and all the rest. Only five cartoons were related to the pandemic this week, four cartoons featured sports in some way, and there were two Back to School cartoons.

Gary McCoy takes the top spot by a wide margin, with an unusual Joe Biden bashing cartoon that doesn’t show Biden or Trump –something that seems to be a requirement among editors. Dave Whamond dominated again this week with three cartoons in the Top Ten, all part of a crazy four-way tie for second place. Pat Bagley impresses with two cartoons on the list this week.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists who made the Top Ten this week, John Cole, Jeff Koterba, Bill Day and Bruce Plante.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 11, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 4 through July 11, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons. Also, this week we’re back to the typical pattern of a steep curve, where the most popular cartoons with newspaper editors far exceeded all the other cartoons in reprints. Seven of the Top Ten are about coronavirus, with three about “back to school,” which is a topic that editors love right now.

Dave Whamond dominated this week with #1 and #2 cartoons that far outpaced the others on the list with close to twice as many reprints as the rest. John Darkow has an impressive three cartoons in the Top Ten this week. Dave Granlund also has an impressive performance with two cartoons on the list. Kudos to the three other cartoonists who made the Top Ten this week, John Cole, Jeff Koterba and Bruce Plante. Great work, gentlemen!

If I was drawing this gag I probably would have put president Trump in the place of the generic economist and it occurred to me that if John had done that, this cartoon probably wouldn’t have made it into the Top Ten. Drawings of Trump make newspaper editors run the other way.

Here is John Darkow‘s second of three cartoons in the Top Ten. Color cartoons get more downloads from editors, so this one really hit the editorial sweet spot to make it into the Top Ten. Editors love “back to school” cartoons about the pandemic.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 4, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (June 27 through July 4, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons. We had no Most Popular list last week, and no list for the month of June, because we had a technical glitch, losing client download data for three days. Sorry about that. But the stats are working this week!

Editors always love cartoons about holidays and anniversaries – that is clear to see this week as five Fourth of July cartoons made the list. This week was unusual because the steep curve we usually see between the few cartoons editors like and all the other cartoons was flattened, so the most popular cartoons were less popular than usual, and the less popular cartoons were more popular than usual. Cartoons number 11 through 30 aren’t so far behind numbers 1 through 10. Perhaps because the curve flattened and the Top Ten is more tightly bunched this week, we have more ties. So … good job everyone! Everybody getting more reprints is what I like to see!

Kudos to Jeff Koterba for placing an impressive THREE cartoons in the Top Ten and to Milt Priggee with TWO of the most reprinted cartoons on the list! Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (June 13-20, 2020). Again this week, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons. Drawing Trump seems to poison a cartoon with editors, limiting reprints.

John Bolton’s sensational new book ripping Trump dominated the news and generated many cartoons, but none of those cartoons were popular with editors and none made the Top Ten. There were no popular cartoons about Trump’s controversial rally in Tulsa. Only one of many cartoons about the Supreme Court’s landmark civil rights decision made the Top Ten. Foreign issues and foreign cartoonists were ignored by editors again this week. Fathers Day is usually popular with editors, but not this year with few cartoons drawn on the topic and only Gary McCoy’s defund the police/Fathers Day cartoon making the list at #10.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. 20% of the cartoonists, and 20% of the cartoons, get 80% of the reprints. Editors think alike. Most of the cartoons in our flow get few or no reprints. The most popular cartoons dominate.

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (June 6-13, 2020). It is interesting to note that no drawings of President Trump have been among the most reprinted cartoons since one appeared in March. This was another week when cartoonists drew passionate cartoons criticizing the president that were ignored by editors. What cartoonists want to draw most is not what editors want to print. It is also rare that editors choose to print cartoons about Joe Biden. The reprint curve is steep with the most popular cartoons dominating the reprints and with most cartoons getting little ink. The foreign cartoonists were ignored by our subscribing, American editors again this week.

Congrats to Dave Whamond for drawing the most reprinted cartoon this week. Kudos to Rick McKee who benefitted from a tie for the #10 spot, squeaking in with an impressive three cartoons on the list (the Top Eleven this week, because of the tie). Jeff Koterba has two cartoons on the list and special congratulations go to Pat Bagley and Peter Kuper who make their first appearances in the Top Ten this week. Dave Granlund, Steve Sack and RJ Matson round out the list of most reprinted cartoons this week. Great work, gentlemen!

Jeff Koterba is in a tie for the #10 spot with his second of two cartoons in the Top Ten (top eleven this week). Editors love Lincoln Memorial cartoons.

The Omaha World-Herald and Cagle cartoonist, Jeff Koterba, will be moderating a special event with Paris-based Oliver Gee, host of the popular podcast, The Earful Tower, and author of a new memoir, Paris on Air.

Originally from Australia, Oliver is a former journalist whose first assignment in Paris was to cover the Charlie Hebdo attack in 2015. He would eventually move to Paris and launch The Earful Tower, which was recently featured in The New York Times as one of the best podcasts to travel by ear.

For those Cagle cartoonists who have attended the annual humor salons in St. Just, and have hung out together in Paris, this event might scratch that itch to return to France. And even if you haven’t been to France, this event promises to be a fun time. Plus, hey, you’ll get to see our buddy Jeff on your computer screen!

Oh, and not to worry—it’ll be presented in English. Although there’s always a chance that Oliver will throw in a French phrase or two.

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (May 30 -June 6, 2020). Our Top Ten is a measure of how many of our subscribing newspaper editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

There is a disconnect between what cartoonists want to draw, what editors want to print, and what readers want to see; this week that divide was plain to see again as there were no cartoons about President Trump in the Top Ten. Cartoonists focused on Trump’s violent crowd clearing and Bible thumping, church photo op, drawing many great and passionate cartoons criticizing the president this week, but that is not what newspaper editors wanted.

Getting cartoons in front of readers is one of the goals of every cartoonist. Regrettably, many of our cartoonists get few or no reprints, especially the foreign cartoonists. 20% of the cartoonists get 80% of the sales and reprints, and most of the cartoonists never make it into the Top Ten.

The Most Popular Cartoons of the Month, May 2020

Here are the most popular cartoons of the month of May, 2020. Regular readers of my blog and newsletter will have seen all of these cartoons in our weekly roundups of the Top Ten Most Popular cartoons. Our Top Ten is a measure of how many of our subscribing newspaper editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. The list clearly shows that newspaper editors have been looking for cartoons about the lighter side of the pandemic.

I’d like to keep these lists to only ten cartoons, but this month we had a three way tie for the 10th place cartoon so there are 12 cartoons on the list. Out of the top 12, a whopping five cartoons are by Jeff Koterba of The Omaha World-Herald (Jeff sneaked two of those into the tie for 10th place). The #1 cartoon is by Steve Sack of The Minneapolis Star-Tribune. I had two cartoons on the list myself. Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this month, RJ Matson, Nate Beeler, Dave Granlund and Randy Enos.

20% of the cartoonists get 80% of the sales and reprints, and most of the cartoonists never make it into the Top Ten. If you don’t like the Top Ten, take it up with your local newspaper editor. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – May 30, 2020

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (May 23 -May 30).

The stats this week were unusual. The beginning of the week followed a familiar pattern of editors choosing light cartoons about the mature coronavirus story, with my own, light virus cartoon from last Sunday claiming the week’s top spot. Later in the week the news turned to Trump’s Twitter distraction and the murder of George Floyd. Few cartoons stood out in the stats this week as usage was flattened among a larger number of topics. The international cartoonists were virtually shut out and not reprinted at all. There is a disconnect between what cartoonists want to draw, what editors want to print and what readers want to see; this week that divide was plain to see as cartoons that were popular on social media were ignored by editors.

Congratulations to Nate Beeler for coming in at #2, and Kudos to Randy Enos who makes his first appearance in the Top Ten at #3.
