Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 4th, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  September 4th, 2021. Kudos to Dave Granlund who dominated the week in overall reprints, and who claimed the most popular cartoon, along with three cartoons in the Top Ten. (Actually it is the Top Eleven because of a tie for 10th place).

Jeff Koterba who dominated last week, had two cartoons on the Top Ten, as did John Darkow. The most poplar topic was Labor Day.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

Top Twelve Cartoons of the Week – August 21st, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  August 21st, 2021. For the second week in a row our cartoons performance graph is remarkably flat, with lots of cartoons performing well and no cartoons dominating the choices of editors.

Kudos to both Kevin Siers and Jeff Koterba who tied for the #1 cartoons and for having two cartoons each in the Top Ten; and congrats to Dave Granlund for having three cartoons in the Top Twelve, as well as for being the most reprinted cartoonist of the week.

With a flat graph and more cartoons performing at close to the same number of reprints, we get a lot more ties – this week I posted a Top Twelve (instead of a Top Ten) since we had a four-way tie for 9th place.  The relatively flat graph is a healthy trend and I like seeing more cartoons performing relatively well. Congratulations to all!

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Cartoon FRAUD!

This comes to us from CagleCartoonist Bob Englehart. There’s a scam going around targeting cartoonists!

A person (In my case she was “Juliet Simon”) will contact you, the cartoonist, and offer you a freelance assignment. The fee they’ll pay is about three times the usual; they want all rights. They’ll tell you the project is in two phases.

Then, they’ll send you a check for twice what you thought. They’ll pay you in advance. After you cash the check, they’ll tell you Phase Two has been cancelled and you have to return half of the fee. That’s the sting. There’s no project.

I got a check from a heating and air conditioning company in California, so I went online to get their information and the owner of the company said he’s gotten about 10 calls from cartoonists. He explained his checking account was hacked and the check is no good. I had drawn four cartoons when the smell of a rat was too strong, so I did my investigative reporting, talked to my banker and called the company in California.

The cartoons I drew are included here so help yourself if you want to use them. I got the inquiry through the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, so that gave it legitimacy. The old adage still stands: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your instincts. I should’ve investigated before I started drawing, but at least I’m not out of any money. So, my fellow cartoonists, enjoy the cartoons and beware!

Pandemic of the Unvaccinated

Here’s my new COVID cartoon. The idea is that either side can win, depending on whose turn is next.

Also notice that for vaccine to win will take two moves, but COVID could win in one move … and there is still the possibility of a tie.

The potent new Delta Variant has created a tragedy in Red States where it combined with anti-vaxxers, COVID deniers, conspiracy theorists and nutty Republicans who see vaccine defiance as patriotism.

Here are some of my “Pandemic of the Unvaccinated,” Republican Anti-Vaxxer favorites from CagleCartoonists Pat Bagley of the Salt Lake Tribune and John Darkow of the Columbia Missourian.
