COVID President

Here’s a collection of my favorite, new cartoons about Trump having COVID, starting with my latest cartoon.

The last day of cartoons were about Trump’s return to the White House from the hospital.  This one is from Dave Granlund.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 3, 2020

Correction 10/14/20: I have to apologize for making an error in the Top Ten for this week, and it was a big error. John Darkow actually had both the #1 and #2 cartoons of the week, and both by a large margin – those darn stats! I have added the missing top cartoon as a second #1 cartoon, with a special congratulations to John for the incredible feat of capping the list with two mega-popular cartoons!

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (September 23rd through October 3rd, 2020). The news about President Trump contracting COVID generated a lot of cartoons on Friday, but none of them made the Top Ten. There was a lot of criticism of Trump’s overly aggressive debate performance, but not in the cartoons that editors chose to publish about the debate.

Congratulations to John Darkow for his #1 cartoon that outpaced the pack by a wide margin this week. Dave Granlund also had a great week with two cartoons on the list. Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba continued their long streaks of Top Ten appearances. We had an unusual three way tie for ninth place so there are eleven cartoons on the list this week.

Kudos to the other cartoonists who made our list of the cartoons most published in newspapers this week, Steve Sack, Rick McKee, Gary McCoy, Randy Enos – and me.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Trump has COVID

Late last night we got the news that President Trump and First Lady Melania have tested positive for Coronavirus. Social media exploded with sarcasm and righteous indignation because of the president’s history of refusing to wear a mask, his super spreader, maskless rallies and his many statements diminishing the importance of the pandemic. The cartoons started coming in this morning – here is mine.

Debate Favorites

Here’s my cartoon about the crazy presidential debate …

We have a great collection of cartoons about the debate on Cagle.com.  Most of the cartoons are bashing Trump for his bulling performance, but a number of cartoons surprised me by taking an even handed approach. Here’s one from Mexican cartoonist Dario Castillejos.

 

Here’s another debate cartoon that  manages not to bash Trump, by Peter Kuper. Editors like cartoons about everyday folks reacting to the topics of the day, and editors like cartoons that avoid bashing Trump, so I’m guessing that this one will be popular.

 

Here’s one by Austrian cartoonist Petar Pismetrovic that puts Trump and Biden on equal footing.

 

Here’s Pat Bagley with a rare, even handed cartoon.

 

Here’s a similar, even handed cartoon from Jeff Koterba, who is usually even handed.

Trump Taxes

The news about Trump’s tax returns came out late on Sunday –too late for editorial cartoonist who come back to work on Monday morning.  I drew the first one on Sunday evening.

In the New York Times story is was interesting to read about how Trump lost a fantastic amount of money over a long period of years; his $70,000 deduction for hair styling is impressive; Trump’s big deductions for Ivanka’s “consulting” in addition to her salary is funky. It looks like there’s a bunch of fraud going on.

The next Trump Tax cartoon arrived this morning from Dutch CagleCartoonist, Tom Janssen.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 26, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (September 19th through September 26th, 2020).

Three of the top cartoons are about the pandemic, five are about Justice Ginsburg and her Supreme Court seat.

Congratulations to Dave Whamond for taking the #1 spot, and to Dave Granlund at #2. The top two cartoons outpaced the pack by a wide margin this week.

Peaceful Transfer of Power

As conservative media obsesses over law and order, the “mainstream media” obsesses over president Trump and his supporters and their “word salad” about a “peaceful transfer of power.” Here’s my cartoon.

Republicans have issued statements that don’t mention Trump, and include the self-serving nonsense implying that they will be eager participants in a constitutional crisis that looms with a possible close election. I hate wordy cartoons, but sometimes there is no good alternative.

RBG RIP

I was saddened to hear of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing. She died at a bad time for editorial cartoons, late on Friday when the cartoonists are off and the newspapers had been put to bed for the weekend – and she died at an even worse time for the nation as her pivotal, conservative successor is likely to be confirmed by a hypocritical, lame duck, Republican Senate. Here’s my cartoon.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – September 19, 2020

Here are our top cartoons of last week (September 12th through September 19th, 2020).

This was an incredible week for Dave Granlund who dominates with four cartoons among the Top Ten most reprinted cartoons.

Every so often, when there is more demand for a topic than there are cartoons on the topic, I’ll repost “evergreen” oldies into the syndication flow, and I’ll mark them “REPOST” so editors won’t be embarrassed by forgetting that they ran the oldie before. Last week I reposted a few cartoons about the wildfires on the West coast, including one by Dave Granlund that made the Top Ten – the first time that has ever happened with a reposted cartoon.

As usual, no drawings of Trump made the Top Ten this week.  Six of the top cartoons are about the pandemic, two are about the fires, and only one is about the election.

Congratulations to Dave Fitzsimmons  for nabbing the #1 spot. Jeff Koterba was close behind at #2.  Jeff continues his long streak of appearances in the Top Ten, the day after being laid off from 31 years on the job at The Omaha World-Herald newspaper.

And kudos to the other CagleCartoonists who made the most reprinted list this week, John Cole, Randy Enos, Dave Whamond and Bruce Plante.

Jeff Koterba Laid Off

CagleCartoonist Jeff Koterba, who has drawn for The Omaha World-Herald in Nebraska for 31 years, was laid off today. There was a time when editorial cartoonists worked for newspapers and syndicated their cartoons to get their work seen outside of their home town; those days are almost gone, as jobs for cartoonists have been decimated at troubled newspapers.

The Lee Enterprises chain has been making painful cutbacks for some time now. Three more CagleCartoonists still have jobs with Lee Enterprises and tell me they haven’t heard anything about cartoonist cutbacks at their own papers. I wish them all luck.

Jeff is my pal and one of our most popular cartoonists; he’s a  regular on our weekly Top Ten most reprinted cartoons list. I’m happy to report that Jeff will continue to draw cartoons for CagleCartoons.

Jeff wrote a book and gave a great Ted Talk about living and working as a cartoonist with Tourette Syndrome.

Trump Book Storm

New CagleCartoonist, Pat Byrnes

I’m happy to write that we have just added a great new cartoonist to our CagleCartoons.com newspaper syndication package!

Pat Byrnes is best known as a regular for The New Yorker – he’s drawn gag panels for all the major magazines and is an NCS Silver Reuben winner.  This will be Pat’s first foray into editorial cartooning for newspapers and he’s got a running start.  Here are some of Pats first cartoons for us.  See more on Pat’s site.  And check out Pat’s new archive on Cagle.com as it updates with new cartoons.
