Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – January 22nd, 2022

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  January 22nd, 2022. Congratulations to John Darkow who drew the #1 cartoon and has two cartoons in the Top Ten. And kudos to Dave Whamond who has two cartoons in the Top Ten and was our most reprinted cartoonist of the week.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

Pandemic of the Unvaccinated

Here’s my new COVID cartoon. The idea is that either side can win, depending on whose turn is next.

Also notice that for vaccine to win will take two moves, but COVID could win in one move … and there is still the possibility of a tie.

The potent new Delta Variant has created a tragedy in Red States where it combined with anti-vaxxers, COVID deniers, conspiracy theorists and nutty Republicans who see vaccine defiance as patriotism.

Here are some of my “Pandemic of the Unvaccinated,” Republican Anti-Vaxxer favorites from CagleCartoonists Pat Bagley of the Salt Lake Tribune and John Darkow of the Columbia Missourian.

Merry Christmas!

Dr. Fauci – Part 3

Here’s my new cartoon about Trump and Dr. Fauci. This has been an interesting couple of weeks as White House bigwigs have been anonymously dishing dirt on Dr. Fauci, followed by Trump’s advisor, Peter Navarro, writing an op-ed in USA Today bashing Fauci, making false claims that USA Today later had to walk back. Fauci’s realism conflicts with Trump’s push to minimize the perception of the coronavirus threat.

Here are some of my recent, Fauci favorites!

Don’t miss Dr Fauci PART 1,and Dr Fauci PART 2!

This is a very difficult time for journalism as newspapers and news sites are losing their advertisers, who are shuttered during the pandemic. It is the same with Cagle Cartoons, as our newspaper clients are getting later and later in paying their bills, making cash flow difficult for us as well.

The pandemic may be the end for many of the newspapers that support our profession, but we can survive with your help. If you are a Cagle.com fan, please make a small contribution to support the cartoons.

My Favorite Cartoonist/Journalist!

I’d like to introduce everyone to my brilliant cartoonist/journalist daughter, Susie Cagle. Unlike the cartoons that everyone is used to seeing on Cagle.com, Susie’s work is non-fiction; she does original reporting in cartoons.

Cartoon journalism is still pretty rare, but it is very effective, especially for making dry topics more interesting and adding some feeling and humanity to stories where text falls flat. And as photojournalism has been made more difficult in our current strange circumstances, cartoon journalism works even when access is difficult. I’d love to see publishers embrace more reporting through cartoons.

Susie freelances from her home in Oakland, California for many major publishers. Here are links to more reporting gems that Susie did for The Nation, WNYC in New York, The Guardian newspaper and another one for The Nation. She’s busy while she’s sheltering in place and I’m delighted to write that she’s expecting a baby boy in November, who will be my first grandchild.

Susie is hoping to earn support from fans on her Patreon page! I encourage everyone to take a look, to see what’s new from Susie and support cartoon journalism! Look below for three excellent, pandemic cartoon interviews that Susie did recently for The Guardian newspaper and visit Susie’s Patreon page to see more.

Support Susie and see more of her work.

Can’t Get Away From Coronavirus

We had cartoons about nothing but the coronavirus for months and this week the cartoons abruptly changed to the George Floyd protests. Today I went back to the coronavirus with a silly cartoon that expresses no opinion, like newspaper editors prefer.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do the editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

I drew a sad couple at the TV yesterday. A goofy TV couple is more typical for me. This nice gag came from a comment on my wife’s Facebook page, so, thanks to whoever wrote that.

Even with the protests, some cartoonists managed to sneak the coronavirus in. Here are five nice ones from our Cagle Cartoonists …

Best of the Grim Reaper –Part 2

This is part two of a collection of my favorite coronavirus Grim Reaper cartoons. The Reaper (or “Death” for short) is a standard cliché for editorial cartoonists; he is a character that belongs to every cartoonist, like, Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty and the donkey and elephant …

We love that Reaper!  And check out The Best of the Grim Reaper, Part 1!  And Part 3!

We still need your support for Cagle.com! We have a long way to go to meet our goal of making Cagle.com entirely reader supported. If you enjoy the cartoons, please consider making a contribution! The pandemic is hitting us our business hard and we can only continue running Cagle.com with your support.

Cagle.com needs your support!
I’d like to urge all of our fans to contribute to Cagle.com at this difficult time. We don’t run advertising in our newsletters or on Cagle.com  –we depend on our readers for support. Now our small business (CagleCartoons.com) and the editorial cartooning profession as a whole, are facing possible extinction as our newspaper clients are suddenly failing. Newspapers are simply not paying their bills as their advertisers have been shut down during the pandemic. Please take a look at our Cagle.com/Heroes page, take a look at my video below, and consider making a contribution. If enough fans make a small, monthly contribution, we can save Cagle.com and keep our cartoonists drawing, at a time when the cartoons are more important than ever. We need you.

Please visit Cagle.com/Heroes and be a Cagle.com Hero!

Here are the rest of the top ten most popular cartoons from last week! Steve Sack has THREE cartoons in the top ten this week!

Jeff Koterba has TWO cartoons in the top ten this week.

Dave Granlund, who had a cartoon that tied for most popular of the week (above), has a SECOND cartoon in the top ten.

This popular cartoon is by John Cole.

This popular cartoon by John Darkow rounds out the top ten.

Tomorrow we’ll have part two of the BLAME CHINA cartoons (see Blame China! Part One in case you missed it), and then we’ll have a new remembrance by my cartoonist buddy, the legendary Randy Enos.

Thanks everyone – we love you all and appreciate your support!
