Don Quixote Trump

President Trump is chasing his “impossible dream” of finding widespread election fraud that could turn the election in his favor. To me, that sounds like time for another Don Quixote cartoon – a favorite trope of the international cartoonists.

I worried a little about whether VP Mike Pence would be recognizable as Sancho Panza, but then I decided that this is probably my best caricature of Pence – it must be how Picasso would have drawn Pence.

I took a look in the vast CagleCartoons archives to find a few more quixotic cartoons, and these are my favorites.

The first one is by our Chinese cartoonist, Luojie, who draws the Chinese government line for The China Daily newspaper. Luojie thinks the USA and EU are chasing windmills with their Chinese trade sanctions.

Our Swedish CagleCartoonist Riber Hanssen has a more complex, but similar point of view with Don Quixote, a fire hose and an impossible dream of extinguishing the Chinese dragon.

Our CagleCartoonist from Oaxaca, Mexico, Dario Castillejos, has Don and Sancho doing a selfie.

Angel Boligan from Mexico City draws Quixote and the media.

Michael Kountouris from Greece sees gender equity as an impossible dream.

Finally, here’s the famous, original Pablo Picasso drawing that inspired my parody cartoon.

Joe and Kamala

The Democratic Convention wraps up tonight, and California Senator Kamala Harris has accepted the Vice Presidential nomination. Here’s my Kamala and Joe in the shadow convention cartoon.

I did a color version, but I like the black and white better.

I’ll be reluctantly voting for Biden/Harris as the lesser of two evils. I’ve never forgiven Biden for his repugnant behavior in the Anita Hill hearing. And I don’t like Kamala Harris’ zeal in jailing thousands of non-violent marijuana offenders in California.

Here are my favorite Biden/Harris cartoons from the convention!

Forgotten Biden – Part 1

With all eyes on the pandemic there are very few cartoons being drawn about the presidential election. Trump still dominates cartoons, along with nasty coronavirus monster-balls, but poor Joe Biden has become almost invisible.  I thought I would scour the database for nice, recent Biden cartoons, and there were enough for only two posts of Biden cartoons. Here they are, the recent Biden cartoons, with part two tomorrow.

We may end up re-electing Trump simply because we all forgot that there is a presidential election this year.

Stanford Rape Judge Aaron Persky

Count me among those outraged by the Stanford rape case. The sentence of six months for handsome young Stanford athlete, Brock Turner, is outrageous. Defending his son, Turner’s father wrote about his son’s sentence, “That is a steep price to pay for 20 minutes of action out of his 20 plus years of life.”

A million signatures have been gathered on a petition to demand the outset of Judge Aaron Persky, himself a white, Stanford athlete. The rape victim wrote a powerful letter to the court, and to her rapist which became a sensation on the internet.

The latest horror in this horror show is Vice President Joe Biden, who wrote a pandering essay to the victim that has garnered much attention and widespread praise in the media. What strikes me about Biden’s essay is that he says nothing that anyone would disagree with. It is a politician’s speech, peppered with emotional triggers and support for the victim while taking no position that anyone would disagree with.  Biden sidesteps the real issues raised by the atrocious sentence and the million signature petition to remove Judge Persky.

Biden may be thinking of Donald Trump’s recent criticism of the judge in the Trump University civil case. Trump has been excoriated by the press, and by Democrats, for criticizing a judge. Trump claims that his “Mexican” judge is biased because Trump wants to “build a wall”. Judge Persky is also being criticized for racial bias; it seems likely that a black defendant would not have drawn the sympathy and light sentence given to the handsome, white rapist who shared Persky’s alma-mater.

Perhaps Biden thinks that now is not the best time for a Democrat to be criticizing a judge.
