Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – November 14, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (November 7th through November 14th 2020). This week the editors flocked to the same cartoons, as usual, with the few, most popular cartoons far outpacing the rest.

This week’s #1 cartoon by Jeff Koterba is the second most reprinted editorial cartoon of the year, and it may yet overtake Dave Granlund’s #1 cartoon of the year so far, from three weeks ago. The #2 cartoon by Dave Whamond would have been a strong #1 in a typical week where the usage curve wasn’t quite so steep.

Dave Whamond and Dave Granlund both impress with two cartoons each on the Top Ten. Hearty congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week, Dave Fitzsimmons, Pat Byrnes, Monte Wolverton, Randy Enos and Gary McCoy.

The most popular topic this week was Alex Trebek. Only two cartoons referencing the pandemic made the Top Ten list. Cartoonists drew scores of cartoons about Trump’s refusal to accept the election results this week, but only three were popular with editors who ignored most of these cartoons.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you! Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

Get Rid of the Pollsters

What is it about pollsters and how wrong they get everything? This presidential election wasn’t supposed to be close. Democrats were supposed to have a shot at winning the Senate and picking up seats in the House. The pollsters are wrong more than they are right. Lets give pollsters the boot.

Editors Want You to VOTE

Newspaper editors love nothing more than a general call to action for readers to vote. Cartoons urging readers to vote are among the most reprinted of all the cartoons. Here’s my new “vote cartoon.”

People like for me to post my rough sketches, so here you go.

I wasn’t happy with Uncle Sam so I drew him over twice. Lincoln and Liberty needed to be taller, but I didn’t redraw them, I just made an indication to remember to make them taller on the final line version. I looked at some photos of Lincoln and his dark, little eyes, so I changed Abe’s eyes, but I like the bigger eyes in the sketch better; I should have gone with the bigger eyes.

This Dave Granlund cartoon from last week is our most reprinted cartoon since we started keep these stats at the beginning of the year.

These “VOTE” cartoons are also among our most reprinted cartoons this year. This one is by John Darkow.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – October 3, 2020

Correction 10/14/20: I have to apologize for making an error in the Top Ten for this week, and it was a big error. John Darkow actually had both the #1 and #2 cartoons of the week, and both by a large margin – those darn stats! I have added the missing top cartoon as a second #1 cartoon, with a special congratulations to John for the incredible feat of capping the list with two mega-popular cartoons!

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (September 23rd through October 3rd, 2020). The news about President Trump contracting COVID generated a lot of cartoons on Friday, but none of them made the Top Ten. There was a lot of criticism of Trump’s overly aggressive debate performance, but not in the cartoons that editors chose to publish about the debate.

Congratulations to John Darkow for his #1 cartoon that outpaced the pack by a wide margin this week. Dave Granlund also had a great week with two cartoons on the list. Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba continued their long streaks of Top Ten appearances. We had an unusual three way tie for ninth place so there are eleven cartoons on the list this week.

Kudos to the other cartoonists who made our list of the cartoons most published in newspapers this week, Steve Sack, Rick McKee, Gary McCoy, Randy Enos – and me.

California and Saint Serra Statues

My cartoon today depicts the bear on the California flag pulling down a statue of Junipero Serra, the controversial Catholic saint who oversaw the opening of nine missions in colonial California. Serra participated in the Spanish Inquisition and enslaved native Americans, imprisoning them at his missions. Statues of Serra have been vandalized recently as many protests toppling statues commemorating racist historical figures have swept the nation, and the world, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder.

The California bear is something of an “everyman” character. I like seeing the movement to purge symbols honoring racist, historical figures; perhaps it is a bit of wishful thinking on my part to see California’s “everyman” tearing down Serra since there is quite a bit of support for defending the many Serra statues that dot our state like a pox. President Trump is using an executive order to boost penalties for defacing racist, historical monuments. My depiction of the California flag today is more a symbol of hope that these protests succeed than than a depiction of today’s reality.

The statue is based on one located in San Juan Capistrano that was relocated recently to protect it from protesters. I lifted Serra’s robe a bit so that I could get some Saddam Hussein action going with his ankles.

When I was in third grade I was required to build a model of a California mission and I was taught a false, fairy tale story about Padre Serra. Thirty years later my kids went through the same thing in school. California students have been required to build those models and have been fed a whitewashed version of history for many decades. That may be changing now as the protests continue. Maybe our “everyman” bear will finally tear down that statue!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – June 20, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (June 13-20, 2020). Again this week, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons. Drawing Trump seems to poison a cartoon with editors, limiting reprints.

John Bolton’s sensational new book ripping Trump dominated the news and generated many cartoons, but none of those cartoons were popular with editors and none made the Top Ten. There were no popular cartoons about Trump’s controversial rally in Tulsa. Only one of many cartoons about the Supreme Court’s landmark civil rights decision made the Top Ten. Foreign issues and foreign cartoonists were ignored by editors again this week. Fathers Day is usually popular with editors, but not this year with few cartoons drawn on the topic and only Gary McCoy’s defund the police/Fathers Day cartoon making the list at #10.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. 20% of the cartoonists, and 20% of the cartoons, get 80% of the reprints. Editors think alike. Most of the cartoons in our flow get few or no reprints. The most popular cartoons dominate.

Trump’s Church Photo Op

We just witnessed a crazy scene where Trump had peaceful protesters next to the White House, in Lafayette Park, forcibly cleared out by police, teargas, horses and troops –so that Trump could have a photo op, holding up a bible in front of a church. There had been an arson fire in their bathroom of the boarded-up church that was likely caused by thugs during an earlier protest. Blame China! Part 1

President Trump has recently been more vocal in blaming China for the coronavirus, as have many voices in the media. China is blamed for being slow to respond to the virus, for silencing Chinese critics and for releasing dubious statistics and propaganda. There are reports that American intelligence agencies are investigating claims that the virus escaped from a lab in Wuhan that was studying the virus in bats. China has pushed back hard against these accusations and we can see the blame game clearly in our cartoons. This is the first of two “Blame China” collections of cartoons.

I’m starting out with the cartoons from Luojie, our CagleCartoonist from Beijing who draws for The China Daily, China’s state owned, national English language newspaper. Loujie draws the Chinese government’s official point of view, pushing back against the criticism coming from America.

Interestingly, most of the “blame China” cartoons come from international cartoonists and few come from American cartoonists, even though China focuses on criticism coming from the USA.

COVID-19 Tsunami Coming

The coronavirus tsunami is coming soon, and President Trump’s plans for crowded churches on Easter and county by county closures is looking pretty stupid in the shadow of the oncoming wave.

I would have liked to make Trump smaller, compared to the wave, but there is only so much I can do to keep a cartoon readable at the small sizes it will often be reprinted in.

Readers may recognize The Great Wave off Kanagawa, perhaps the most famous Japanese woodblock print ever, by Katsushika Hokusai in the early 19th Century. I love the wave.
