Here are Jeff Koterba’s Top Ten cartoons of the year that were most reprinted in newspapers. Jeffrey Koterba is a cartoonist, writer, musician, and creativity advocate. A cartoonist for The Omaha World-Herald from 1989 to 2020, his award-winning work has appeared in publications the world over, and have also gone into space. Entertainment Weekly called Jeff’s memoir, Inklings, “…a powerful and moving portrait of an artist.” He is lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the Prairie Cats, a swing and jump-blues band.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – November 28, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (November 21st through November 28th 2020). The Top Ten cartoons dominated newspaper editors’ choices again this week. The top three cartoons did especially well.

Six holiday cartoons made the list; seven of the cartoons were about the pandemic. No drawings of Trump or Biden were popular with newspaper editors. No cartoons about foreign issues were popular. The Top Ten cartoons dominated the choices of editors, again this week.

Dave Granlund had a great week with a very popular #1 cartoon and two cartoons in the Top Ten. Dave Whamond and Jeff Koterba also had impressive weeks, each with two cartoons on the list.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists who had the most reprinted cartoons this week: Steve Sack, Dave Fitzsimmons, John Cole and Rick McKee.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – November 21, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (November 14th through November 21st 2020). The Top Ten cartoons dominated newspaper editors’ choices this week with all ten tightly bunched, close to equally popular and far ahead of the rest of the cartoons in reprints.

Thanksgiving/pandemic combo cartoons were most popular this week, with six of these making the Top Ten. Again, no drawings of Trump were popular with editors, even while Trump continues to dominate the news. Editors avoided scores of cartoons about the messy presidential transition, crazy Rudy Guiliani and claims of election fraud. As usual, no foreign topics were popular with American editors. Only one cartoon on the list (Bob Englehart at #2) expresses a political view, however mildly – unless concern about the pandemic is considered a political view.

Congratulations to Dave Whamond for his #1 cartoon. Kudos to Jeff Koterba and Dave Fitzsimmons who both have two cartoons in the Top Ten!

And congrats to the other cartoonists who made the Top Ten list this week: Bob Englehart, John Darkow, Dave Granlund, Bruce Plante, and me.

Mike Lane Remembered

I was saddened to learn that Mike Lane, the brilliant cartoonist who drew for The Baltimore Sun, has passed away. See our archive of Mike’s cartoons on Cagle.com.

Nearly twenty years ago I started my CagleCartoons.com syndicate; Mike was one of the first cartoonists to join our group and Mike’s brilliant work was a very important boost for us as we were starting up. Mike had a unique, expressive style and I really appreciated his support in our early days. Mike drew for The Baltimore Sun from 1972 to 2004. He joined CagleCartoons in 2002, drawing for syndication for seven years after he left The Baltimore Sun.

Mike pulled no punches in syndication, blasting George W. Bush from the left. Mike drew with a profound sense of morality. His art is bold and funny. Mike was a liberal champion of the downtrodden. He was an all-around great cartoonist!

Mike retired from editorial cartooning in 2009 and we’ve kept his cartoons in our PoliticalCartoons.com store, where reprints from his seven years with us continue to sell.

Here’s a quote from Mike, from an obit in the Baltimore Sun, “It’s not enough to simply depict opposing factions. It’s good to pick a fight. But it’s not noble or courageous; it’s just my job. Any less is pandering to popular opinion. Too many cartoonists value popularity over doing their jobs. I have a long history of angry letters to the editor. One of my proudest is from the general counsel to the National Rifle Association.”

Inserting New Rectal Feeding

This is a classic oldie showing dinnertime at Guantanamo. The Gitmo prisoners go on hunger strikes and there was lots of news about how they were force-fed “Ensure” through tubes in their noses. I thought that was fun when superimposed on Norman’s Rockwell’s famous dinnertime painting.

When the new Senate report on CIA torture came out we learned that these guys are also fed rectally, and they drink rectally too, with “rectal hydration.” I thought I had to issue a correction, so here it is …

It is important to be accurate.
