Top Ten Cartoons, June 2, 2022

After a gunman massacred 19 kids in a school in Uvalde, Texas, it’s not surprising to see a number of our shooting cartoons widely reprinted by news organizations. But what is surprising is the four most reprinted cartoons this week had nothing to do with country’s latest mass shooting – they touched on college graduation, inflation, and Memorial Day.

Peter Kuper’s cartoon about masks was also one of the most widely-reprinted cartoons this week, a sign that more than two years into the pandemic, COVID-19 still remains an important issue in the lives of readers.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1

Gary McCoy took the #1 most reprinted spot.

#2

Daryl Cagle (that’s me) took second place!

#3

Dave Granlund took third place!

#4

Dave Whamond nabbed 4th place too.

#5

Dave Granlund claims the five-spot with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#6

Kevin Siers came in sixth.

#7

Dick Wright nabs seventh place.

#8

Peter Kuper took 8th place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#9

Adam Zyglis takes 9th place!

#10

John Darkow wraps it up at number ten with his second cartoon on the list.

That includes: Texas, Alaska, Arizona,Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

I gave the maskless idiot the same basic face as the Coronaviruses – it’s only fair.

Texas COVID Party

Texas Governor Greg Abbot just dropped COVID restrictions on business and masks, at a time when new variants of the virus are threatening a new resurgence. Mississippi too. Some other states dropping restrictions to a lesser degree. Bad timing for public health but it is always good timing for cartoonists.  Here’s mine:

And here are my recent favorites on Texas’ reckless health blunder. This one is by Steve Sack

Trump and the Courts

Update 12/11/20 5:30pm: The Supreme Court just dismissed the Texas lawsuit. Good for them.

President Trump has been losing his lawsuits to overturn the election results. One last try is a desperate suit by the embattled Texas Attorney General, joined by Republican states and, as I’m posting this, 126 Republican congressmen. The Supreme Court is expected to decline to hear this latest atrocious lawsuit very soon, and that is the reason for my cartoon today – I’m anticipating a reasonable response from the Supreme Court.

I was flipping through my oldies and I found this SCOTUS gavel cartoon I drew back in 2000, showing Al Gore taking it on the head when the Supreme Court intervened to decide the election for George W. Bush. It seems like an appropriate image for today, presuming the court doesn’t make electoral trouble again.

Today I put Trump into that twenty year old drawing.  Here’s the sketch.

I like drawing losers getting bashed with the gavel – sometimes the losers are sympathetic. Here is the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals striking down gay marriage back in 2009.

Here are the four, gavel waving conservative justices of the Supreme Court, back in 2013, when I thought they were about to ban gay marriage again – they surprised me and did the right thing that time.

We can’t ever be sure that the courts will do the right thing, but most of the time they do. Gotta hope for the best.

TRUE Stupid Stuff 2!

Here’s another new batch of my old TRUE cartoons from the 1990’s – at least the ones that look like they could still be true. This is from a batch about government.

Thoughts and Prayers

The most recent school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas was interesting for the contrast with the Parkland, Florida shooting where student survivors rose up to lead protests, making eloquent arguments for gun control. In deep red Texas the response is standard, Republican “thoughts and prayers.” I’m sick of “thoughts and prayers” so this is my cartoon:

There are lots of cartoonists who feel the same way. Here are some of my “thoughts and prayers” favorites …

Texas Disaster

Back when I was a local cartoonist for the now-defunct Honolulu Advertiser newspaper, there was a disaster where a negligent captain allowed his submarine to be controlled by a stupid celebrity who rammed into a Japanese High School fishing boat, killing and failing to rescue many of the kids. I reacted with cartoons strongly criticizing the Navy and the captain of the sub – but I missed the mark. The paper had a second cartoonist, Dick Adair who drew a memorial cartoon with leis floating on the water. Dick’s cartoon was better.

When a disaster first strikes, and people die, mourning should come first. I was thinking about that with the Texas floods as my colleagues were drawing gags and cartoons criticizing Trump’s visit to the scene, or cartoons championing the first responders, I thought I should take a step back and remember Dick Adair’s cartooning wisdom with a flowers on the water memorial cartoon, this time including a cowboy hat to signify Texas. Maybe readers and editors are in the mood for gags, but I’m in more of a somber, sympathetic mood.

Donald Trump Birther-Bashes Ted Cruz

Republicans loved it when Donald Trump led the “birthers” in their suspicions that President Obama was ineligible to be president because he was supposedly born to his American citizen mother in Kenya. Trump claims credit for forcing Obama to release his “long form” birth certificate to prove he was born in Hawaii. Now Ted Cruz, who was born to an American citizen mother in Canada actually fits the mold.

Republicans likely don’t care much about the “birther” argument applied to Ted Cruz, but I’m enjoying it. Here’s Donald Trump bashing Cruz with his Canadian-flag-speech-balloon.

As I was drawing this I noticed that Trump’s speech balloon is pointing at his crotch. Perhaps this is a visual Freudian slip.

I’m trying to live-stream all of my drawings now. Watch the YouTube video below! My apologies for this video being a little jerky in places; I’m still getting the hang of this.
