Syria Doggies, Turkey, Immigration and Cookie Monster!

Here are my new cartoons!  The most recent one is about Obama’s response to the crisis in Syria.  Drawing Arabs as dogs is deeply insulting – I suppose that just puts dogs onto cartoonists’ palettes of cliches.  I may get some angry mail for this one.  I’m annoyed by Obama’s worthless response to Syria, at the same time, I’m happy that Obama isn’t jumping in to chew it up in this Syrian dogfight when both sides look to be bad guys.

This one is a drawing of Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.  He’s a pretty easy caricature, and I think I nailed him.

… still, I hate to put labels in cartoons – particularly when the label is to identify someone who is drawn with an identifiable caricature, something lousy cartoonists do when they can’t draw good caricatures.  Sometimes I just can’t depend on the readers to know what the guy will look like and I have to put in a label – still I hate it, so I distributed a second version of this one without a label.  I suppose this would work as an illustration for an op-ed piece about the turbulence in Turkey.  He’s a fun guy to draw.  I love the shape of his head.  I also like his middle name – it sounds like something Paris Hilton’s dog would say.

This one is about the split in the Republican party on immigration Reform.  I suppose we’ll see if any reform-candy comes out of that pinata next week.

The next one is a Muppet cartoon, with Cookie Monster the Republican enjoying all the White House scandals.

Regular readers here know that I worked for the Muppets for the first half of my career and I’m a big Muppet fan.  I draw a Muppet themed cartoon about once a year – this is a good excuse to show a few more …

I drew this one back in the George W. Bush days when we were all talking about torture and water-boarding.

I once illustrated a whole childrens’ book about Elmo – who claims a permanent space in my brain – oh!  I hear the voice!  I drew the one below when we got the news about the CEO of Chick-fil-A opposing gay rights, and the Muppets spoke out against it and in favor of gay rights – makes me proud of my Muppet roots.

This one was when congress was threatening to cut funds to public broadcasting – and Sesame Street.

When the Sesame Street people decided to make Cookie Monster love vegetables, and made cookies a “sometimes food” I drew this one.

I drew this one when there was a scandal at Goldman Sachs, and it was revealed that greedy, Wall Street types derisively call their clients “Muppets.”

Conservative Cartoonists Weigh in on 'Occupy Sesame Street'

The battle over Sesame Street continues to be waged on the battlefield of TV news. The President has heightened his rhetoric following last week’s debate about Romney wanting to defund PBS, and Republicans have responded by playing a clip of Obama during 2008 when he said, “If you don’t have a record to run on… you make a big election about small things.”

We’ve had a lot of cartoons come in over the past week about Romney trying to kill Big Bird, so in order to prove not all cartoonists think alike, here are a handful of cartoons about the effort to defund PBS from our more conservative cartoonists.

Eric Allie thinks President Obama might have the wrong priorities…

While Augusta Chronicle cartoonist Rick McKee thinks Big Bird’s argument might be mistimed…

Columbus Dispatch cartoonist Nate Beeler finds the one Muppet that doesn’t support the President…

Beeler also introduces us to this Christmas season’s hottest toy…

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review cartoonist Randy Bish thinks the argument boils down to simple math…

Cartoonists Weigh In On The First Presidential Debate

Viewers turning in to see a firey, zinger-filled debate were treated to an event columnist Peter Funt said “was such bad television that many Americans, including the prized “undecided voters,” probably gave up and changed the channel.”

One of the most talked-about nuggets to come out of the debate was Romney’s renewed call to cut funding to PBS, despite the fact it only accounts for 0.012 percent of the budget (check out all our Defunding PBS cartoons). Here’s the cartoon I drew at the time Republicans proposed defunding PBS as a way to help balance the budget:

Rob Tornoe’s cartoon from last night also weighs in on the desire to give the budgetary axe to Sesame Street. Poor Big Bird:

Our conservative bomb-thrower Gary McCoy predicted how the so-called “mainstream media” would try to spin last night’s debate results:

While Mobile Press-Register cartoonist JD Crowe dug past the soundbytes to try and find the truth fact checkers seemed so desperate to uncover:

Speaking of fact checkers, Bob Englehart of the Hartford Courant figures with all the misstatments during last night’s debate, they’re about ready for the funny farm:

Meanwhile, Adam Zyglis of the Buffalo News reminds us what follows every presidential debate:

My Gay Marriage Cartoons

President Obama’s decision to come out this week in support of Gay Marriage caps a decade-long shift in the acceptance of same-sex couples in this country. Obviously, there are many religious groups and individuals that will never support the idea of two men shacking up, but the polling data is pretty interesting.

[ View our complete collection of Obama Gay Marriage cartoons

When the Defense of Marriage Act was signed in 1996, only 25 percent of the American public supported same-sex marriage. Since then, support has increased gradually until an August 2010 CNN poll showed majority support for same-sex marriage, where it has remained ever since.

I decided to look back into my archives. To my surprise, I’ve drawn a great number of cartoons dealing with the idea of gay marriage.

Here’s the cartoon I drew after gay marriage was legalized in California…

Here’s a cartoon I drew after the military repealed its “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy…

This is a cartoon I drew after two sex scandals rocked the GOP – one involving a congressman hiring a prostitute, and the other involving gay sex and a bathroom stall. You might guess how the reactions differed…

While society’s view of same-sex marriage has changed over the years, the GOP’s wardrobe has remained stuck in time…

Here’s a cartoon I drew back in 2004 when gay marriage became legal in Massachusetts…

And here’s how I imagined baptist preachers might respond to the growing trend of same-sex marriages…

And because no discussion of gay marriage is complete without Bert and Ernie…
