Get Out of Jail Free!

Every couple of  years it is time for another Monopoly metaphor cartoon. Here’s my cartoon today about the police violence protests.

I get contacted by doctoral students who write their dissertations on the usage of particular metaphors in editorial cartoons – they like to count how many times they occur. Takes the joy out of a cartoon, huh? Well, that’s what doctoral students do. I might suggest that if anyone wants to do their thesis on Monopoly metaphors in editorial cartoons, they will have a lot of counting to do.

Here’s one I did back in 2008, on the Sarah Palin VP choice.

The next one is a rare cartoon where I had something positive to say, touting what was then the biggest charitable donation in history – Warren Buffet’s multi-billion dollar donation to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The 1930’s era rich guy character in Monopoly, “Rich Uncle Pennybags“, is classic cartoon fodder whenever news about rich people comes along, and a pig character won’t do. Usually he doesn’t appear in political cartoons that are too flattering to him. I drew this next one with the George W. Bush stock market crash and subsequent bailout of the evil bankers (who, by the way, were never prosecuted).

Remember when five Gitmo prisoners were traded for sketchy American POW, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl? I drew this one with little caricatures of the released Gitmo prisoners.

Back when I was working with msnbc.com I rarely got a call from an editor asking for anything, so I was surprised one day to hear from an editor at the Today Show, which was planning lots of coverage on Paris Hilton, who was being released from jail that day. They really wanted a quick cartoon, so I gave them this one.

When George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin, not so long ago, I drew my most recent “Get Out of Jail Free” cartoon.

So, doctoral students – start counting!

Cartoons from the 2008 VP Debate

We have an extensive archive of cartoons here on Cagle.com. From time to time, I think it’s fun to take a look back at how our cartoonists covered events in the past.

RELATED: 2012 VP Debate Prep Cartoons

As we await the start of tonight’s highly-anticipated Vice Presidential Debate between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan, here are five funny cartoons about the Vice Presidential Debate in 2008 between Biden and former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

On This Day in 2009, Palin Resigns

On this day back in 2009, Sarah Palin gave a big “You betcha'” to the Washington elite and announced she would resign as Governor of Alaska in order to “effect positive change outside of government.”

How’s she done? Comment below or drop us a note on our Facebook page.

Here are five cartoons from our archives reacting to her surprise announcement:

Newt Gingrich Cartoons

Newt Gingrich finally made it official, announcing on both Facebook and Twitter that he’s going to run for President in 2012. Actually, his message to his followers was to tune into Fox News on Wednesday night, where he will “talk about my run for President of the United States” with host Sean Hannity (once a Fox shill, always a Fox shill).

What do the nation’s cartoonists think of his chances? Check out our Newt for President cartoon slideshow to find out.

Rush Limbaugh is a Big, Fat Idiot

Popular talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh is no stranger to controversy, and often says dumb things just to get people riled up. But on a recent show, Limbaugh exceeded his own standards and called out first lady Michelle Obama on her body and eating habits.

“I’m trying to say that our first lady does not project the image of women that you might see on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue or of a woman Alex Rodriguez might date every six months or what have you,” Limbaugh said Monday.

I guess Rush doesn’t have a mirror, or else he might have steered clear of commenting on the perceived healthiness of someone else. Luckily for us, we have political cartoonists to take his dopey comments and re-direct the fun his way.

My favorite so far might be this cartoon by Pat Bagley depicting The Maha Rushie as Jabba the Hutt, and his dittohead followers as a poor princess trapped by the powerful toad-eater.

Brilliant caricaturist Taylor Jones got in on the act as well, depicting a scene no one on this Earth ever wanted to witness: Rush in a bikini.

Not surprisingly, Sarah Palin has gotten in on the nutrition-bashing act as well. Here Nate Beeler puts her silly and hyper-partisan comments into the proper perspective.

Palin's Target Cartoons

Sarah Palin has gotten into hot water in some circles for her infamous ‘crosshairs’ map, which targeted legislators who voted for Obama’s health care bill. Her people claim that they are merely “surveyor symbols.” Regardless, cartoonists have formed their own opinions, and you can check out what they think in our new Palin’s Target cartoon slideshow.
