Chinese Spy Balloon -Top Ten Cartoons

Check out our new Caglecast, Top Ten podcast — it is brand new and we haven’t gotten it set up on the podcast platforms yet, so this is a sneak peek. Or watch the video:

This week, it was all about balloons.

The Chinese spy balloon shot down by the U.S. after floating across the country was the perfect metaphor for cartoonists. So it’s no surprise that balloon cartoons made up a majority of our most-reprinted toons this week.

Editors also reprinted a lot of cartoons about President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech, where he went back and forth with disapproving Republicans in real time. It’s been a wild week.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Dave Whamond

#2. Jeff Koterba

#3. John Darkow

#4. Guy Parsons

#5. Dave Whamond

#6. Dave Granlund

#7. Jeff Koterba

#8. John Darkow

#9. Adam Zyglis

#10. Dave Whamond

Top Ten Cartoons of the Past Week!

President Joe Biden delivered a speech in Philadelphia last week where he called out “MAGA Republicans” and claimed former President Donald Trump and his supporters are a threat to American democracy.

Naturally, our liberal cartoonists supported what Biden said during his speech, while our conservative cartoonists thought he was a hypocrite thanks to his tone and bluntness.

Editors liked cartoons on an interesting mix of topics this week, including Labor Day, space junk, and new British Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. John Darkow, Columbia Missourian

#2. Jeff Koterba, Cagle.com

Inflation Woes: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Inflation remains a big story across the country, so it’s not surprising that most of the top ten reprinted cartoons this week touched on the rising prices hitting just about everyone.

This week also saw Americans scrambling to finish their tax returns, a universally-despised activity shared by cartoonists and editors alike. And a couple of COVID-19 cartoons made it into the mix this week, as cases once again begin to rise across the country.

And here are the Top Ten …

John Darkow took the #1 most reprinted spot, the first of two cartoons John has in the Top Ten.

#2

Pat Bagley took second place with his first of two in the Top Ten.

#3

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – November 27th, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending  November 27th, 2021. Every popular cartoon this week had a holiday theme.

Jeff Koterba again had the most reprinted cartoon of the week, which appeared in about 172 newspapers. Jeff also has two cartoons in the Top Ten and was our most reprinted cartoonist again this week, overall.

Kudos to Rick McKee and Dave Whamond who have two cartoons each in the Top Ten – actually it is the Top Eleven this week because we have a tie for #10.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

Heavy Spending

Here’s my new cartoon on the heavy spending in President Biden’s Infrastructure Bill.  I’m seeing inflation everywhere (except in official reports of the inflation rate). A whole lot of borrowed money has been pumped into the economy by Trump, and now Biden.

I haven’t drawn many conservative cartoons over the Trump years, but looking back on Obama’s eight years I was drawing a lot of cartoons that criticized Obama. Cartoonists like to criticize and with Democrats controlling Congress and the presidency, more of our CagleCartoonists, who aren’t know of drawing conservative cartoons, are drawing conservative cartoons.  Here are a few examples …

John Darkow

Ed Wexler

Bar van Leeuwen

Taylor Jones
