Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – March 6, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending March 6th, 2021. Congratulations to Jeff Koterba who won the week with the #1 and #10 cartoons. Congrats to Steve Sack who got the overall most reprints for the week with the #2 and #4 cartoons.

And kudos to the other cartoonists in the Top Ten this week: Bruce Plante, Dave Whamond, Rick McKee, Daryl Cagle (me), Adam Zyglis, and John Darkow.

This week we had six pandemic cartoons, two on Dr. Seuss, one on New York Governor Cuomo and one on the murdering Saudi prince. Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 60+ cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Texas COVID Party

Texas Governor Greg Abbot just dropped COVID restrictions on business and masks, at a time when new variants of the virus are threatening a new resurgence. Mississippi too. Some other states dropping restrictions to a lesser degree. Bad timing for public health but it is always good timing for cartoonists.  Here’s mine:

Jeff Koterba on Editorial Cartooning

When my full-time cartooning job at the local newspaper was eliminated a few months ago, I gave myself exactly one day to grieve. I’d been there for over 30 years and while it broke my heart to lose my job, I knew that better things were ahead. The next day, I decided to learn everything I could about Patreon. And, as it turns out, Patreon is not only a blessing for me as a cartoonist, but it’s giving my readers far more interesting and timely content than ever before.

For those not familiar with Patreon, it’s a fresh take on the traditional concept of artists creating work with the support of patrons.

As much as I love poking fun at politicians, I equally enjoy drawing about the things that impact us all very directly…

It’s no secret that newspapers are hurting. But journalism—and, I would argue, editorial cartoons—are now more essential to our democracy than ever. If you see my cartoons published here on Cagle.com or in other publications around the country, it’s thanks to Cagle and to my supporters on Patreon. It’s because of them that I’m able to create several cartoons each week on the topics that impact us all.

If nothing else, Covid inspires a new way to look at age-old situations like dating …

Also, now that I’m free of my local newspaper’s deadline, I’m able to draw cartoons whenever there is a breaking story, publishing the work immediately. Which means content that’s more timely than ever before for you.

And beyond that, I pull back the curtain on my creative process and invite supporters along the way, as I share sketches-in-progress, not to mention time-lapse videos of my process like this one.

I drew this cartoon as I watched live coverage of what was happening in Washington that day…soon after, I followed up with this cartoon.

Plus, there are lots of other perks. I even host an exclusive monthly Zoom show, “Koterba’s Theory of Creativity,” where I chat with guests about the creative process. In fact, my guest for March will be Rick Kirkman, not only one of my supporters on Patreon, but the artist behind the popular comic strip, “Baby Blues.”

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending February 27th.

Here are the weekly Top Ten cartoons. Congratulations to John Darkow who won the week with the #1 and #8 cartoons. And kudos to  Jeff Koterba and Dave Fitzsimmons who each have two cartoons in the Top Ten. And congrats to Kevin Siers, Nate Beeler and Gary McCoy!

Six of the cartoons reference the pandemic. There are two cartoons depicting Joe Biden – which doesn’t seem to push editors away like Trump cartoons did.

Top Ten Cartoons of January, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last month, January, 2021.  We usually do the Top Ten of the Week, but this week our stats were down for a couple of days as were were working on new programming. The weekly Top Ten will be back next Saturday.

January was a wild month with the pandemic, the presidential inauguration and the Capitol insurrection. New Years, Martin Luther King and GameStop also made the list.

This was an impressive month for Steve Sack, who had a strong #1 and and also scored in 6th place.  Dave Granlund also kicked cartoon butt with three cartoons on the list (#2, #5 and #9). Dave Whamond (#7 and #10) and Jeff Koterba (#3 and #4) each had two cartoons on the list. Kudos to Dave Fitzsimmons who had the #8 cartoon.

Guantanamo Vaccine and Invitation

I flip back and forth between news channels and I saw the news about the Guantanamo prisoners get COVID-19 vaccine before almost everyone else can get it. And I noticed that this story didn’t seem to exist on the mainstream news channels, and I though the old lady saying “Death to America” was kind of funny.  Imagine my disappointment this morning when the cartoon was almost finished and I hear the news that the military was putting the Guantanamo prisoner vaccinations “on hold” while they reconsider it.

SO, I made a last minute change to the wording.

… and the cartoon isn’t as good.

But what the heck.

Hey, check this out … Our own Steve Sack has won the most recent National Press Foundation (NPF) Berryman Award. The NPF usually has a big, annual banquet for their award winners but this year, because of the pandemic, they are having a free, online event on “Hopin“, and they have invited everyone to attend.

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. Pacific Time ON FEBRUARY 18TH, with the main program at 5:30 Pacific – 6:15 pm. followed by a “break-out-room” from 6:15 pm to 6:45 p.m. where Steve Sack will be speaking about his work. It will be moderated by last year’s Berryman winner, CagleCartoonist R. J. Matson. Register for the event at: https://hopin.com/events/npf-2021-awards-celebration You will receive a Zoom-like email 24 hours prior to the event, which will give you another link OR you can also use the same registration link at that time – it goes to the same place on Hopin.

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (January 16th through January 23th 2021).

We have a tie for 10th place so the Top Ten is the Top Eleven this week. This was inauguration week and the presidential transition dominated the news and the cartoons.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – January 16, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (January 9nd through January 16th 2021).

The news was dominated by President Trump and continuing fallout from the insurrection at the Capitol, but as usual, no cartoons depicting Trump were popular with editors. Four of the Top Ten cartoons are about the pandemic.

Jeff Koterba had another incredible week taking the #1 and #8 spots. Dave Whamond also had a fantastic week, taking home three prizes for #6, #9 and #10.

Congratulations to the other CagleCartoonists who made the Top Ten list this week: Kevin Siers, Dave Granlund, John Cole, Randy Enos and Gary McCoy.

The Koterba and Granlund top two cartoons each got about twice as many reprints as the #3 – even so, we’re back to the normal pattern of the Top Ten cartoons dominating all the rest of the cartoons and the top two being extra big hits.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – January 9, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (January 2nd through January 9th 2021).

This week was dominated by the news of President Trump inciting a mob to assault the Capitol and 7 out of the 10 cartoons are on this topic, and the three cartoons on other topics were drawn before Wednesday’s insurrection. Editors resist reprinting cartoons that depict president Trump, but the news this week was severe enough that two drawings of Trump made the Top Ten.

The Top Ten cartoons are what most readers see since only 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints. This week the curve was flattened a bit as the top cartoons got less reprints than usual and more cartoons did relatively well.

Another fascinating thing about the week is the incredible performance of Jeff Koterba who has the #1, #3, #4 and #8 cartoons on the Top Ten list, dominating American newspaper editorial pages for the week!
