Media Shark Dinnertime

The media feeding frenzy grows as more Trump confidants “flip”!

Maybe I’ll draw a follow up cartoon with blood in the water – no blood from Fox News, though; they may just deflate a little as scandals grow.

Remember the cartoon below? This shark cartoon was easy to draw because I had already gathered all of the logos!

Trump and Twitter

Here’s my new TwitterTrump with the media.

I searched our database for other “Trump hair on the Twitter bird” cartoons for this blog post just now, and I found this similar Nate Beeler from some months ago.

Ouch! That is pretty similar and Trump looks poised to barf. We’re getting to a saturation point on Trump with Twitter-bird cartoons; there are thousands.  Twitter-bird in Trump’s nesty hair is pretty common, as are Twitter birds pooping on and swarming around Trump in all manner of aggressive scenarios. Just go to PoliticalCartoons.com and search for “Twitter” to see the swarmy swarm.

Media Bopper

The White House Correspondents Dinner was even more of a show this year as President Trump chose to have a competing rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Trump seemed to pull out all the stops on bashing the press, so I decided to pull out the bopper clown.

I almost did two versions of this cartoon, one with a media clown, and another with a normal looking reporter as the bopper. A few years ago I drew conservative and a liberal version of a cartoon because I changed my mind about the issue and I was assailed by some of my cartoonist colleagues who accused me of creating a new business plan to get twice the value at half the cost, by drawing two versions of cartoons while abandoning my principals.  I was tempted to do two versions of this one, to annoy my colleagues, rather  just for fun – but the clown version was better.

I’ve also been rethinking the way I draw Trump to be more how I feel Trump than how I actually see Trump, so I’m making him fatter, with a longer, bigger, bottom of the face just because the bottom half of his face is more interesting and when cartoonists find something interesting, we make it bigger. Big hair. Big bottom of the face. Big poochy lips.

Boxing with an inflatable bopper character is a standard editorial cartooning cliché. Here’s another one of mine from ten years ago …

Get Out of Jail Free!

Every couple of  years it is time for another Monopoly metaphor cartoon. Here’s my cartoon today about the police violence protests.

I get contacted by doctoral students who write their dissertations on the usage of particular metaphors in editorial cartoons – they like to count how many times they occur. Takes the joy out of a cartoon, huh? Well, that’s what doctoral students do. I might suggest that if anyone wants to do their thesis on Monopoly metaphors in editorial cartoons, they will have a lot of counting to do.

Here’s one I did back in 2008, on the Sarah Palin VP choice.

The next one is a rare cartoon where I had something positive to say, touting what was then the biggest charitable donation in history – Warren Buffet’s multi-billion dollar donation to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The 1930’s era rich guy character in Monopoly, “Rich Uncle Pennybags“, is classic cartoon fodder whenever news about rich people comes along, and a pig character won’t do. Usually he doesn’t appear in political cartoons that are too flattering to him. I drew this next one with the George W. Bush stock market crash and subsequent bailout of the evil bankers (who, by the way, were never prosecuted).

Remember when five Gitmo prisoners were traded for sketchy American POW, Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl? I drew this one with little caricatures of the released Gitmo prisoners.

Back when I was working with msnbc.com I rarely got a call from an editor asking for anything, so I was surprised one day to hear from an editor at the Today Show, which was planning lots of coverage on Paris Hilton, who was being released from jail that day. They really wanted a quick cartoon, so I gave them this one.

When George Zimmerman killed Trayvon Martin, not so long ago, I drew my most recent “Get Out of Jail Free” cartoon.

So, doctoral students – start counting!

ISIS or ISIL or IS or Islamic State, War and Opinion Poll Zombies

Public opinion polls show the vast majority of Americans support our jumping into the war in Syria and Iraq. No wonder. TV news nowadays is constant cheerleading for war. I wonder if cable news is as successful in selling us adult diapers, catheters, supplemental health insurance and gold. See our Obama and ISIS or ISIL or IS or Islamic State cartoons here:http://www.cagle.com/news/obama-and-isis/

The vast majority of hypnotized, zombie, idiot Americans support the war in Syria and Iraq.

Olbermann Calls It Quits

After eight years, msnbc commentator Keith Olbermann announced at the end of last night’s edition of Countdown that his contract had ended and the show would be his last.

Cartoonists have weighed in for years on Olbermann, who was msnbc’s most popular host. Here are some great cartoons over the years about the polarizing cable host, both from the left and the right.

Full disclosure: I am the cartoonist for msnbc.com.

Lame Duck Cartoons

It may have been a “lame duck” congress, but by passing several major pieces of legislation including a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, I guess the term “lame” is in the eye of the beholder… or the cartoonist.
