Haley vs Trump – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Despite Donald Trump’s win in the New Hampshire primary this week, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley isn’t kissing the ring. The Republican presidential candidate – who worked in Trump’s administration as his U.N. ambassador – pledged to remain in the race until the South Carolina primary next month.

This is bad news for Trump but a great turn of events for the nation’s cartoonists, who can now spend another month lampooning the intra-party fight between Trump and Haley, all while Biden remains out of the picture. Maybe they’ll even get on a debate stage together. I’d certainly sharpen my pencil for that one.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

WINTER CHILL – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Everyone loves a good weather cartoon!

Frigid temperatures, plies of snow, blistering wind chills – bad weather is one of the few things that impacts everyone, so it’s no surprise some of this week’s most-popular cartoons were about this week’s Arctic blast across the U.S.  Congrats to Jeff Koterba for his #1 weather cartoon.

We also had a number of popular cartoons about Donald Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses and his stranglehold on the Republican Party heading into the 2024 elections. The Trump cartoons won’t end with the New Hampshire primary up next, but cartoonists will probably lose interest in Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis if they don’t pull off an upset win.

Biden’s Border: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

While Kevin McCarthy’s delayed election as Speaker of the House drew all the headlines, opinion editors seemed much more interested this week in President Joe Biden’s trip to the border and the classified documents found in an old office and his garage.

Buffalo News cartoonists Adam Zyglis also drew a pair of popular cartoons about Damar Hamlin, the Bills safety who suffered a cardiac arrest during a game last week. Thankfully, Hamlin has recovered well, and was released from a Buffalo hospital on Wednesday.

These are the Top Ten from Wednesday to Wednesday, last week to the week before:

#1. Dave Granlund

#2. Rick McKee

#3. Dave Granlund

#4. Dick Wright

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 11, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 4 through July 11, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons.  Also, this week we’re back to the typical pattern of a steep curve, where the most popular cartoons with newspaper editors far exceeded all the other cartoons in reprints. Seven of the Top Ten are about coronavirus, with three about “back to school,” which is a topic that editors love right now.

Dave Whamond dominated this week with #1 and #2 cartoons that far outpaced the others on the list with close to twice as many reprints as the rest. John Darkow has an impressive three cartoons in the Top Ten this week. Dave Granlund also has an impressive performance with two cartoons on the list. Kudos to the three other cartoonists who made the Top Ten this week, John Cole, Jeff Koterba and Bruce Plante.  Great work, gentlemen!

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

#1

Congratulations to Dave Whamond who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week.

#2

Dave Whamond also drew the #2 most reprinted cartoon this week!

#3

John Darkow has three cartoons in the Top Ten this week, including this one that is tied for third place.

#3

Dave Granlund has two cartoons in the Top Ten and shares 3rd place.

#5

John Cole takes 5th place. If I was drawing this gag I probably would have put president Trump in the place of the generic economist and it occurred to me that if John had done that, this cartoon probably wouldn’t have made it into the Top Ten. Drawings of Trump make newspaper editors run the other way.

#6

Here is John Darkow‘s second of three cartoons in the Top Ten.  Color cartoons get more downloads from editors, so this one really hit the editorial sweet spot to make it into the Top Ten. Editors love “back to school” cartoons about the pandemic.

#7

Bruce Plante is in 7th place.

#8

Jeff Koterba takes for 8th place.

#9

Here is John Darkow‘s third cartoon in the Top Ten.

#10

Dave Granlund claims the ten-spot with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – July 4, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (June 27 through July 4, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons.  We had no Most Popular list last week, and no list for the month of June, because we had a technical glitch, losing client download data for three days. Sorry about that. But the stats are working this week!

Editors always love cartoons about holidays and anniversaries – that is clear to see this week as five Fourth of July cartoons made the list. This week was unusual because the steep curve we usually see between the few cartoons editors like and all the other cartoons was flattened, so the most popular cartoons were less popular than usual, and the less popular cartoons were more popular than usual. Cartoons number 11 through 30 aren’t so far behind numbers 1 through 10. Perhaps because the curve flattened and the Top Ten is more tightly bunched this week, we have more ties. So … good job everyone! Everybody getting more reprints is what I like to see!

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

Congratulations to Dave Granlund for drawing the most reprinted cartoon this week! Kudos to Jeff Koterba for placing an impressive THREE cartoons in the Top Ten and to Milt Priggee with TWO of the most reprinted cartoons on the list! And congratulations to the rest of the cartoonists who drew the most reprinted cartoons this week: Steve Sack, John Darkow, Bruce Plante and Nate Beeler.  Great work, gentlemen!
