Who Lives in a Bubble?

Here’s my new cartoon about living in a bubble.

There isn’t much depth to this cartoon. It is what it is.

I get lots of requests to show the rough sketches for my cartoons, so here’s the rough sketch!

I thought I would add a few of my recent, favorite coronavirus cartoons!  Enjoy!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – August 1, 2020

Here are the ten most widely published cartoons of the week (July 25 through August 1, 2020). As usual, no drawings of President Trump are among the most reprinted cartoons –and we had lots of cartoonists draw Trump this week.

Christopher Weyant takes the the #1 spot, running away with the week by a wide margin!

No one has two cartoons in the Top Ten list this week, so kudos to our other nine cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons this week:  Jeff Koterba, Rick McKee, John Cole, RJ Matson, Steve Sack, Dave Granlund, John Darkow, Nate Beeler and Bruce Plante.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

#1

Congratulations to Christopher Weyant, who drew the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week!

#2

Jeff Koterba takes second place.

#3

Rick McKee takes the #3 spot. There are two Biden cartoons in the Top Ten this week. There are very few cartoons drawn about Biden, and clearly editors would like to see more.

#4

Steve Sack is part of a three-way tie for 4th place.

#4

Here’s RJ Matson, also tied for 4th place.

#4

John Cole shares 4th place with a “back to school” COVID cartoon, still a popular topic with editors.

#7

Here’s Dave Granlund in seventh place with another “back to school,” COVID cartoon.

#8

John Darkow is in 8th place. Trump’s crazy comments about his simple cognitive test were a popular topic with editors, but only if the cartoons didn’t show Trump.

#9

Nate Beeler takes the #9 position with the second Biden cartoon on the Top Ten, and the second cognitive test cartoon.

#10

Bruce Plante takes the ten spot.

Dr. Fauci – Part 3

Here’s my new cartoon about Trump and Dr. Fauci. This has been an interesting couple of weeks as White House bigwigs have been anonymously dishing dirt on Dr. Fauci, followed by Trump’s advisor, Peter Navarro, writing an op-ed in USA Today bashing Fauci, making false claims that USA Today later had to walk back. Fauci’s realism conflicts with Trump’s push to minimize the perception of the coronavirus threat.

This is a very difficult time for journalism as newspapers and news sites are losing their advertisers, who are shuttered during the pandemic. It is the same with Cagle Cartoons, as our newspaper clients are getting later and later in paying their bills, making cash flow difficult for us as well.

The pandemic may be the end for many of the newspapers that support our profession, but we can survive with your help. If you are a Cagle.com fan, please make a small contribution to support the cartoons.

Hydroxychloroquine

5/22/20 Note from Daryl: If you came to the blog this morning you saw a database error message, right when our email newsletter came out linking to this post. We’ve been suffering from an unusual denial of service attack directed at a particular component in the backend of our system, bringing down the blog. Our other sites displayed as cached versions this morning but are live again now, so all pages and functions are available again. We’re still working on defending against this ongoing DDoS attack, but all is well for now. Thanks for your patience.

Here’s my Trump taking hydroxychloroquine cartoon, a couple of days late but this topic seems to have legs.

And here’s the rough sketch because people seem to want to see that. The big curved arrow is a note to myself to switch the positions of the Democrat donkeys, because it is usually best to have characters face into a cartoon, but then I decided that I liked them facing out.

Our newspaper clients are crashing now as Coronavirus is crushing their advertisers. We need your support for Cagle.com (and DarylCagle.com) now more than ever! Notice that we run no advertising! We depend entirely upon the generosity of our readers to sustain Cagle.com. Please visit Cagle.com/heroes and make a contribution. You are much appreciated!

Here are four of my recent hydroxychloroquine favorites from our CagleCartoonists.  This one by Kevin Siers made me laugh.

And this one by Hajo de Reijger made me laugh again.

This crappy cartoon comes from Nate Beeler.

This one is from Jimmy Margulies

First to Sound the Alarm

President Trump claims that he wasn’t late in taking action about the pandemic, he argues that he was early, by declaring a travel ban on China on January 31st, to take effect on February 2nd. Trump’s claims are in dispute and there have been many reports of early warnings that the White House didn’t respond to, and recommendations of stronger measures that Trump should have ordered earlier.

Among those sounding an early alarm about the coronavirus threat are the world’s editorial cartoonists. Here is a batch of cartoons from our cartoon first-responders who were among the first to draw about the threat.

This quote is from our conservative cartoonist, Rick McKee,

My first coronavirus cartoon is dated January 31, and I remember thinking at the time, “I wonder if enough people know about this to get the reference?” I was following the story very closely while the virus was still limited to China and hearing stories about how they were quarantining residents by welding them in their homes, monitoring them with drones and building emergency hospitals in 10 days. I knew this was not a normal virus and if it came to the US, things would get bad very quickly. My son lives in Los Angeles and I remember the first documented case of the COVID-19 virus was in L.A. on January 23 at LAX. I texted him that day to alert him to start preparing for the possibility of a city-wide lockdown.  Rick McKee

And here’s Rick’s cartoon …

Planet COVID-19, Part 4

Our Planet COVID-19 posts end today – unfortunately, the coronavirus may go on for months. I think the cartoonists are doing their best work as they are stuck at home. Disasters bring out the best in cartoonists, and their work is more important now than ever. At the same time, the pandemic is taking a terrible toll on newspapers and we’re seeing a collapse of newspapers now that will bring on a collapse of our political cartooning profession. Please visit Cagle.com/heroes to see what you can do to help save the cartoons.

This week we’re passing a grim milestone, posting more than 1,000 coronavirus cartoons on Cagle.com! New Coronavirus Favorites

Here is my newest coronavirus cartoon followed by a new batch of my COVID-19 favorites.

I’ve been getting requests to show my messy rough sketches, so here you go. This one is scribbled on the back of a page of CagleCartoons letterhead.

I enjoyed this cartoon from Gary McCoy. We’ve been getting a lot of COVID-19 cartoon with the virus as an alien. This is funnier.

This one is by our Greek cartoonist, Michael Kountouris. We’re seeing quite a few cartoons with Adam and God from the Sistine Chapel for some reason.

Here’s another nice Sistine Chapel cartoon by Ed Wexler.

This one is by Adam Zyglis. Editors typically prefer cartoons that are funny and that don’t criticize President Trump, so this one won’t get reprinted as much as the cartoons above. I’m working on a Trump virus cartoon now that probably won’t get much ink.

This one by Rick McKee doesn’t really speak to the coronavirus, unless you got it from your own butt, after someone coughed on your butt –still, it makes me laugh. Cartoonists love cartoons about butts, even when there isn’t really a reason for a butt.

As a last thing –when I do blog posts I choose keywords to help in a search. I thought the keywords for this post were particularly funny. Here are the keywords: coronavirus, COVID-19, President Trump, pandemic, empty shelves, Sistine Chapel, God, Adam, creation, aliens, Jack and the Beanstalk, health, medicine

The keywords make me laugh.
