TRUE Crazy Stuff 2!

Here’s another batch of my TRUE syndicated newspaper cartoons from 1995. I’m culling out the cartoons that are not too stale to include in our PoliticalCartoons.com database and making little changes so that don’t seem too dated; sometimes that is hard and I have to delete some of my favorite oldies. I’m letting quite a few old style TVs and land line phones sneak through.

I suppose it is more interesting that so little has changed.

Flu Epidemic Grips America

The new on TV often doesn’t match up well with the news that actually affects most people – by that measure, I think theft epidemic is the biggest story in the USA right now, with hospitals filled to overflowing across the nation. Also, it is an excuse to draw something different than the rest of the pack of editorial cartoonists who are obsessed with Trump every day.

It is so nice to have an opportunity to draw a nasty monster. I thought about drawing a “flu bug” insect, like the Zika cartoon below …

But the Zika epidemic was transmitted by roaming mosquitos. My “flu bug” looks a bit too much like a reptile.

The image at the right, from Wikipedia, shows what the “flu bug” actually looks like. I don’t find this image to be very interesting; it has no eyes, or legs, or teeth, or snot. If is was an amoeba shape I could take some license with the shape to make arms and legs, but no.

Reptiles are threatening, so, what the hell. The flu is trouble for everybody, including me.

The TrumpCare Cliff

I love those little lemmings who all commit mass-suicide by leaping off of cliffs in the Arctic. The lemmings metaphor is a standard for editorial cartoonists and I’ve drawn them a few times myself. Here is today’s cartoon with the Republican elephants running off of the TrumpCare cliff.

Gotta love those lemmings. Here’s one I drew for the “Arab Spring” revolution in Egypt …

Seven years ago when congress was debating ObamaCare, I drew this Democrat lemmings cartoon …

This is one of my most popular and most plagiarized cartoons, about graduate lemmings and unemployment …

I drew these lemmings in 2007 when we had the mortgage and housing collapse …

I’m sure I’ll be drawing plenty more lemmings during the Trump administration. Want to see me draw the new TrumpCare lemmings cartoon in real time? Watch the video below. You can watch it at 1.5 speed which makes it 150% more interesting!

And here is the video of my coloring the GOP lemmings cartoon in Photoshop on my Wacom Cintiq …

Republicans Craft a Replacement for Obamacare

Here’s my cartoon about Republican deliberations as they craft an Obamacare replacement bill, in secret.

This is a cartoon that I drew many years ago, when the Republicans were fighting about some subject that I don’t remember now (I added the Obamacare title yesterday and reposted the cartoon). It seem the Republicans are united when we have a president who is a Democrat, but a Republican president seems to get them fighting with each other again.

American donkey and elephant characters, as representations of our political parties, is a mainstay of American editorial cartoonists, making our cartoons difficult for foreign readers to understand. Since Trump is often at odds with other Republicans, cartoonists have been drawing fewer elephants recently. There was a time when we could count on Republicans to oppose deficit spending and a static list of issues that don’t register high on the Trump agenda, so the elephant character is hard to define now, and even harder to associate with Trump. But when Republicans fight with each other, I don’t have to worry much about definitions.

Voodoo Hillary!

With all the news last week about Hillary’s health reinforcing the alt-right narrative about Hillary being sick and secretive, I got to thinking about how Donald Trump might be spending his play time.

I wanted to make Trump look like a little kid, delighted with his toy, as he inflicts dark magical, medical horrors upon Hillary. Want to see me drawing this one in real time? Check it out in the video below.

See me color this one in the video below!

Screwed by the EpiPen!

With so many Trump and Hillary cartoons, for so long, we’ve had a nice, refreshing break with the Mylan EpiPen pricing scandal. There have been a lot of these cartoons as the story is so outrageous, jacking the price of EpiPen from $100 to $600, screwing hundreds of thousands of people who suffer from severe allergies to common threats like peanuts and bee stings. The drug company, Mylan, raised the salary of their CEO by millions and, in response to criticism, introduced a new “generic” version of their EpiPen for “only” $300.

We have a great collection of EpiPen cartoons! Come take a look!

Watch me draw this cartoon in real time in the YouTube video below – and in the video below that, watch me color the cartoon in Adobe Photoshop on my Wacom Cintiq.

Here’s the coloring …

The Zika Mosquito!

This is the Zika mosquito hitch-hiking from place to place.

zika-mosquito

Here he is in black and white. I usually do a special version for grayscale, rather than just gray scaling the color art.

In the video below you can see me draw this bad boy. I thought long and hard about whether to put a “Zika” label on the mosquito, and I made the manly decision to forego the label.

In the video below you can see me coloring the mosquito in Photoshop. It should open 14:40 into the video, that’s no mistake, it just takes out the time. I didn’t edit this one!

3/21/16 update: Here’s my mosquito as it appeared today in the Ouest France Newspaper, France’s highest circulation newspaper. Thanks to my buddy Kianoush Ramezani and his united sketches.org foundation that organizes this stuff. I’m impressed that they put my photo and bio alongside the cartoon.

Carly Fiorina’s Eye Test

Carly Fiorina insists that Democrats should look at the Planned Parenthood gotcha tapes to see the images of a “fully formed fetus, its legs kicking, as someone says “we have to keep it aline to harvest its brian.” Trouble is, no such video exists. Florin says that is just a “technicality.” And, considering that most of what Planned Parenthood does is health services unrelated to abortion, I thought I would draw Fiorina getting a Planned Parenthood eye test – there’s no way to know what she will see.

Frankly, the Planned Parenthood tapes seem to me to be nothing more than meat for the Republican wolves, without any real substance. I would like to see Planned Parenthood, and all abortion providers, give tissue samples (or as Fiorina would say, living, kicking, cute. little human babies) to researchers – if it was up to me, I’d require them to do so, and to conduct the abortions in such a way as to make those samples more viable for research as they are now prohibited from doing, and I’d have them charge for it. Why don’t we hear calls for requiring all abortion providers to do what Planned Parenthood does on these tapes?

Better to let the Poor Suffer in Tennessee

I drew a local Tennessee cartoon today. The legislature has taken up “Insure Tennessee” again, after voting it down – the bill would accept a boatload of Obamacare federal money to provide healthcare to many tens of thousands of uninsured poor and would cost Tennessee nothing … well, nothing but pride; refusing the money means thumbing their tea party noses at Obama, and accepting Obamacare money makes the reddest of the red look like hypocrites. Better to let the poor go without healthcare in the minds of the knuckle-dragging Republicans who rule the state capitol.

To his credit, Tennessee’s Republican Governor Haslam has campaigned tirelessly to accept the deal – makes me appreciate the governor. It would mean free money for the state, but it’s still a long-shot.
