EASTER EXTRAVAGANZA: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Easter was certainly on the minds of editors across the country this week, with four of our top ten most reprinted cartoons giving a nod to the religious holiday. Generally, editors and readers seem to enjoy holiday cartoons, while cartoonists typically hate drawing them.

Inflation was also a big story last week, with prices on just about everything continuing to rise. And editors remain uninterested in running cartoons about the war in Ukraine.

And here are the Top Ten …

#1

Bruce Plante took the #1 most reprinted spot, by a wide margin.

#2

John Darkow took second place with his first of two in the Top Ten.

#3

Dave Granlund took third place.

#4

Dave Granlund took 4th place too!

#5

Dick Wright claims the five-spot.

#6

Dave Whamond came in sixth.

#7

John Darkow nabs seventh place with his second cartoon in the Top Ten.

#8

Rick McKee took 8th place.

#9

Jeff Koterba takes 9th place.

#10

Dave Granlund wraps it up at number ten with his third cartoon in the Top Ten.

Our weekly Top Ten is now a newspaper column!  Subscribing editors can find it at CagleCartoons.com with download links to grab the cartoons in high resolution.

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – April 11, 2021

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of the week ending April 11rd, 2021.

Congrats to Bob Englehart who has the #1 cartoon. Congratulations to Dick Wright who had his best performance since joining CagleCartoons with the #4 and #5 cartoons. Also congrats to Dave Granlund who has two cartoons in the Top Ten.

And kudos the other cartoonists who had most reprinted cartoons last week, Pat Bagley, Steve Sack, Jeff Koterba, Dave Fitzsimmons and John Darkow.

Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com. These are the cartoons that editors picked last week.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

Bob Englehart wins outpacing the pack!

#2

Pat Bagley takes second place.

#3

Steve Sack wins third place.

#4

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – June 6, 2020

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (May 30 -June 6, 2020). Our Top Ten is a measure of how many of our subscribing newspaper editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 63 cartoonists in our syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers subscribe to CagleCartoons.com.

There is a disconnect between what cartoonists want to draw, what editors want to print, and what readers want to see; this week that divide was plain to see again as there were no cartoons about President Trump in the Top Ten.  Cartoonists focused on Trump’s violent crowd clearing and Bible thumping, church photo op, drawing many great and passionate cartoons criticizing the president this week, but that is not what newspaper editors wanted.

Getting cartoons in front of readers is one of the goals of every cartoonist. Regrettably, many of our cartoonists get few or no reprints, especially the foreign cartoonists. 20% of the cartoonists get 80% of the sales and reprints, and most of the cartoonists never make it into the Top Ten.

Congratulations to Jeff Koterba of The Omaha World-Herald for the #1 most reprinted cartoon this week. Dave Granlund was a close second. Congrats also go to Dave Fitzsimmons of The Arizona Daily Star, and Bruce Plante of The Tulsa World, who each have two cartoons in the Top Ten. I was happy to see Milt Priggee make his first appearance in the Top Ten this week. Kudos also go to the rest of the artists with the most reprinted cartoons: Rick McKee, John Cole, and Dave Whamond.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, so do editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers, and along with them, our Cagle.com site, that our small, sinking syndicate largely supports, along with our fans.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.  We need you! Don’t let the cartoons die!

Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – April 25, 2020

Here are the ten most popular cartoons of the week (April 18 -25).

I wanted to write about how much I appreciate your messages of support since we started our crowd-funding effort to support Cagle.com. Usually our email consists of complaints from readers who disagree with cartoons –often demanding apologies or demanding that I punish or fire cartoonists, or that I remove the cartoons that readers find offensive, disagreeable or wrong. I guess it is the negative nature of the internet.

But with our fund raising campaign I’m getting charming, kind words from lots of readers about how much they enjoy the cartoons and how they look forward to getting their Cagle.com newsletter in their email box every day. It is a Bizarro world that has flipped my email box from nasty to lovely, as I’m hearing from our normally silent fans. It warms my heart!

We still need much more support to keep the cartoons coming as so many of our troubled newspaper clients have fallen behind in paying their bills. We’re also facing a big increase in hacker attacks now. (I apologize for the annoying pages on Cagle.com that make you wait a few seconds while Cloudflare checks your IP address to make sure you’re a real person and not just another “denial-of-service” attack.)

Support from our fans can make the all the difference as the pandemic/newspaper-crash threatens to kill our profession. Editorial cartoons are an important part of journalism and the world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

Thanks for your generosity!

The most popular cartoon of the week was this one by David Fitzsimmons.

The number two spot is held by this cartoon from John Cole.

The third most popular cartoon is this gem from Dave Whamond.

The next seven round out the top ten this week. Dave Granlund has a whopping THREE cartoons in the top ten.
