Top Ten Cartoons of the Week – December 12, 2020

Here are our most reprinted cartoons of last week (December 5th through December 12th 2020).

Six of the cartoons combined Christmas with Covid themes, which is clearly what newspaper editors want to see right now. As usual, no drawings of Trump or Biden made the Top Ten, even as transition problems and Trump’s last lawsuit dominated cable news. No cartoons about foreign issues were popular, despite some excellent cartoons about Boris Johnson, the EU and failing Brexit trade negotiations.

The Top Ten cartoons are what readers see since only 20% of the cartoons get 80% of the reprints.

Rick McKee won the week with a strong #1 cartoon,  Jeff Koterba and John Darkow each had two cartoons in the Top Ten. Great work, gentlemen.

Congratulations to the other cartoonists with the most reprinted cartoons of the week, RJ MatsonPat ByrnesNate Beeler, Dave Granlund and John Cole.

Our Top Ten is a measure of how many editors choose to reprint each of our cartoons, from the 62 cartoonists in our CagleCartoons.com syndication package. Just about half of America’s daily, paid circulation newspapers (around 700 papers) subscribe to CagleCartoons.com

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

The world needs political cartoonists more now than ever. Please consider supporting Cagle.com and visit Cagle.com/heroes.

#1

Rick McKee wins the week with this very popular Christmas/pandemic cartoon.

#2

RJ Matson takes second place with this impressive cartoon that he tells me he created in Photoshop in only two hours. Unbelievable.

#3

Jeff Koterba snags third place with this Christmas/COVID combo cartoon.

#4

Jeff Koterba takes 4th place with another Christmas/COVID combo cartoon.

#5

Nate Beeler takes 5th place with this Christmas/COVID combo cartoon.

#6

Pat Byrnes claims 6th place with this COVID cartoon.

#7

John Darkow claims 7th place with a cartoon implying that 2020 was a bad year and 2021 will be better – one of the most popular themes for editors.

#8

John Darkow wins 8th place with this Chuck Yeager memorial cartoon. There was a time when obit cartoons were the most popular with editors, but those days have been drowned out by the pandemic.

#9

Dave Granlund nabs 8th place with the only cartoon about the ugly presidential transition that dominates the news, but not the ink. The candy coating of a 2020 year cartoon makes it a cartoon that editors will swallow.

#10

John Cole takes 10th place with a cartoon about virtual learning during the pandemic. Education during the pandemic is another favorite theme for editors.

TRUE Kids 3!

Here’s another collection of my TRUE cartoons about kids!

I’m loading my oldies into our PoliticalCartoons.com database, and making some editorial decisions on what to edit or cut. These TRUE cartoons ran in newspapers back in 1995. It is interesting to see how many of them hold up well over the years. Things don’t change much. The TRUE cartoons that look stale have land-line phones, phone booths, and old style televisions. I’m culling out the cartoons that refer to events and politicians in 1995 – after all, our database is an online store and I don’t think people will be interested in licensing stale cartoons. Political cartoons in general go stale fast, which is both a problem and a blessing for us.

Summit Butt Kiss

The big summit in Helsinki is tomorrow, where President Trump will kiss Vladimir Putin’s butt, even though we now know the details of the Russian cyber-campaign to boost Trump and bash Hillary in the 2016 election.

Yes, Trump is off target. He needs to move a little to the left. Just to show that I’m an equal opportunity cartoon butt kisser, here is a butt-bonus oldie – President Obama kissing the butt of the king of Saudi Arabia.

Trump’s Stinky Quote

I was away at the cartoonists convention in France when Trump’s Access Hollywood tape came out. It always happens that when I’m away I really want to draw a cartoon! So, excuse this one being late, but it is still what everyone is talking about.

Does this fart-face cartoon look familiar? Remember my entry in Iran’s Holocaust Cartoon Contest a while back?

I liked this cartoon, and those darn Iranian folks didn’t choose to include it in their exhibition, so there weren’t many people who saw it – the perfect excuse to dust off this classic for Donald Trump!

Trump in the Toilet

Trump looks like he is spinning down the tubes. I wasn’t sure that this cartoon would work, since it is rather odd, and there may not be room for his body under his head in the toilet … but maybe there is. I think the fun part of this is the swirl of hair at the top.

Last week when I was at the big editorial cartooning festival in St Just le Martel, France, I was in a “cartoon fight” against a Romanian cartoonist named “Clear,” who wore his vampire cape. They built a boxing ring and had big easels for us. The theme was Trump and I drew The Donald grabbing the Statue of Liberty’s “pussy” – an image I was sure would be the Yahtzee of the week. I think the nicest Liberty-“pussy” cartoon is this one at the right by Alen Lauzan from Chile.

I’ll post more on the convention in France soon! And when I get over the euro-cold I brought back with me I’ll start live-streaming cartoons again – stay tuned.

Trump/Putin Bromance

Here’s the Donald giving a big bromance kiss to Vladimir Putin. They are both so strong. Mmm.

I futzed around  with this one before deciding on this close-up – you can watch my indecision in the video below.

In the next video, watch me coloring the kiss in Photoshop!

Obama Kisses Saudi King’s Butt

President Obama has threatened to veto a bill that would allow 9-11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia for their support of the 9-11 terrorists and would make public 28 redacted pages from the 9-11 Commission report that likely implicates Saudi Arabia. This week Obama traveled to meet with Saudi King Salman, so I drew this.

I’d like to see the bill pass and I’d like to see what is on those 28, top secret pages in the 9-11 Commission Report. The Saudis have threatened to sell all of their hundreds of billions of dollars of assets in America if the bill passes. That’s fine with me.

Here’s the first of two videos of my live stream drawing this one.

In the second video, below, I finish up the drawing and color it in Photoshop as I chat with my live viewers. Come to Twitch.tv/darylcagle to follow me and be notified when I come online to draw the next streaming cartoon.
