Conservatives Gary McCoy and Rivers – Drawing Amongst Liberals

On this week’s Caglecast we’re joined by two of our most conservative cartoonists, Gary McCoy who also draws two comic strips, “The Duplex” and “The Flying McCoys”; and Rivers, who draws anonymously and joins us with a disguise and an altered voice.

The vast majority of editorial cartoonists are liberal so the few, conservative cartoonists stand out as unusual, and often stand alone voicing ideas that seldom find their way into general circulation newspapers; Gary and Rivers are among the best among the few conservative cartoonists, and they talk about living in a world of liberal editors which includes their liberal editor who is hosting the podcast, me, Daryl Cagle.

Gary and Rivers show lots of their favorite cartoons, they enjoy denigrating Dr. Anthony Fauci; they deny the efficacy of COVID vaccines; they complain about the ignorance of liberals who watch MSNBC; they let us know that we wouldn’t have this war in Ukraine now if Trump was in office; they tell us about how the insurrection wasn’t an insurrection at all, and how most of the MAGA folks on January 6th were out for a peaceful stroll.

We could have titled this “Cartoons from the Bizarro Dimension.”  …but we love Gary and Rivers. Really, we do.  Here are a few of the images that are discussed in the video.

Biden’s Border: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

While Kevin McCarthy’s delayed election as Speaker of the House drew all the headlines, opinion editors seemed much more interested this week in President Joe Biden’s trip to the border and the classified documents found in an old office and his garage.

Buffalo News cartoonists Adam Zyglis also drew a pair of popular cartoons about Damar Hamlin, the Bills safety who suffered a cardiac arrest during a game last week. Thankfully, Hamlin has recovered well, and was released from a Buffalo hospital on Wednesday.

These are the Top Ten from Wednesday to Wednesday, last week to the week before:

#1. Dave Granlund

#2. Rick McKee

#4. Dick Wright

The Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

The good news? Home prices are dropping. Unfortunately, interest rates continue to climb as the Federal Reserve fights to slow down inflation.

Several of our most popular cartoons this week revolve around the high prices we’re all continuing to pay. Dave Whamond’s funny Monty Python riff on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was also popular with editors.

The number eight cartoon about the “Fall Equinox” is a correction of our number one cartoon from last week. Cartoonist Guy Parsons wrote the cartoon about the “Fall Solstice” and, of course, there is no such thing. A group of school children wrote to Guy about the error, and Guy made this corrected cartoon, which was also widely published. No adults complained about the “Fall Solstice” — just kids.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

LIZ CHENEY LAMENT: TOP TEN CARTOONS

August is typically a slow news month, but between the FBI searching Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate and the national shortage of teachers, there’s been plenty for cartoonists to draw about.

This week, editors loved Chris Weyant’s funny cartoon about confused liberals upset over Liz Cheney’s Republican primary loss. Cartoons about rent hikes, climate change, and the slow return of COVID-19 were also popular.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

Back to School – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

Kids are returning to school, and cartoonists sharpened their pencils this week on the many issues districts across the country face, whether it’s a shortage of teachers or out-of-control supply costs due to inflation.

There was also that FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Largo residence in Florida. While editors reprinted a number of our cartoons on the incident, just one cartoon featuring Trump made it onto our top ten list. Editors don’t like running Trump cartoons nearly as much as cartoonists love drawing them.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#1. Jeff Koterba, Cagle.com

#2. John Cole, Scranton Times-Tribune

#3. John Darkow, Columbia Missouran

Recession Rumblings – Top 10, August 4th, 2022

Are we in a recession or not? Experts have been debating what’s going on after figures released last week showed that while the U.S. economy shrank for the second straight quarter, job growth continues to be strong.

Of course, things are falling along political lines – Republicans say we are, Democrats say we’re not. Does everything have to be about politics?
