Twitter Poop

President Trump suffers from his impulsive Tweeting. Earlier this week he was accusing President Obama of wire-tapping his phones in a series of tweets that blew back to bite him.

A number of cartoonists have drawn the twitter bird flying over and pooping on Trump. I thought a giant Twitter bird would be funny, because it would poop more. And trump is one of those rare characters tho is recognizable even with his face covered in bird poop.

I didn’t live-stream this drawing, but I colored it, along with the last cartoon, in the video below. Come watch!

Apple vs. the FBI and Third World Despots

The legal battle between the FBI and Apple promises to be epic. I come down on Apple’s side; we’ve seen how important technology is in undermining evil despotic regimes around the world. If courts can force tech companies to become foot soldiers in regime efforts to spy on their populations that will be a loss for freedom around the world.

apple-despots

I drew this one as a live stream. Watch me color it in Photoshop in real time in the YouTube video below (scroll past the timer at the beginning).

Click on the YouTube video below and it should start at 2:48:40 where I start drawing the Apple vs Despots cartoon. This was a long afternoon of work, and I drew the previous cartoon before this one. Sorry for the lack of editing, but hey, you see everything. I have nothing to hide.

Andy Singer’s Panel Cartoons in the Editorial Cartoon Spot

Editorial page editors typically reject anything new and different from editorial cartoonists. Unusual styles and formats are just not what editors want to see. Editors like cartoons that look like what they think editorial cartoons should look like – which leads to lots of cartoons that look much the same.

I’ve been a big fan of Andy Singer’s self-syndicated, altie “No Exit” panel for years, and I’ve been encouraging Andy to try his hand at more traditional editorial cartooning. Andy’s panel has content that is socially conscious, like an editorial cartoon, but it is not the right shape, and it is wordy, and it doesn’t have caricatures of politicians and the panel format with a title is simply not something editorial page editors will consider putting in their daily editorial cartoon hole.

What to do? Andy wanted to be on the editorial pages but was committed to continuing the “No Exit” panel. Then he gave me a new pitch, saying, “Daryl, you know, when I put two of my panels next to each other it becomes the shape of an editorial cartoon, and if I do two panels that are on the same topic, and color them, it looks like one big editorial cartoon.” The idea looked interesting to me. The result is rather stylistically different than what editors are used to but Andy’s new editorial cartoon format looks like wordy, multi panel editorial cartoons, and editors seem to be accepting them. The connection between the two panels might be a stretch, but no one seems to notice. So far, so good.

A number of comic strip cartoonists, Like Dan Piraro and Wiley Miller, have been doing their cartoons in both strip and panel format for years. Andy’s work has some format advantages over most magazine gag cartoonists’ work; Andy’s panels are topically editorial cartoons to start with, and he doesn’t have a classic gag cartoon style with a caption at the bottom, which would be more difficult to reformat. Still, it may be that some other socially conscious panel or gag cartoonists could develop a new market by finding a procedure to reformat their ongoing work as editorial cartoons. Andy Singer is the trailblazer.

One of Andy’s new, combined format cartoons for the editorial pages. With the same characters and consistent color and format, it looks right as a single editorial cartoon and is proving popular so far.

Here are a couple more new editorial cartoons from Andy. Follow Andy’s work on Cagle.com here.

Metamorphosis!

Richard Nixon is great fun to draw.  It would have been wonderful to work as an editorial cartoonist during the Watergate days.  It was an editorial cartooning renaissance.

This week, the pack of cartoonists all ran in the direction of comparing Barack Obama with Richard Nixon because of Obama’s worsening three scandals: the AP records seizure, Benghazi and the IRS.  I draw metamorphosis cartoons every so often, when the news seems to be calling out for them.  Here is the line art for Obama turning into Nixon, which most readers will see in newspapers that print in black and white.

Just after the presidential election, the folks at Fox News were apoplectic about their loss, and ranted that Obama would be free to be the wild, radical leftist they knew he was all along, now that he was freed from the constraints of needing to be re-elected.  So I drew this metamorphosis cartoon.

Cartoonists draw evolution themed cartoons all the time – which are pretty similar to metamorphosis, I guess.  Here is Mitt Romney, and his evolving views about evolution, from back in 2007.

Here’s an evolving Donald Trump from 2011.

Cartooning, evolution and metamorphosis! It’s a tradition!  I’m working on another one today.

Facebook and Radio Interview

Here is an interesting audio piece from Eric Klein on Pacifica Radio, interviewing me and altie cartoonist Lloyd Dangle about the status of editorial cartoons, where political cartooning is going in the future and those frustrating cartoon iPhone apps.

Businessweek magazine is doing a story on the Facebook privacy policy next week and asked us for cartoons on the topic – we didn’t have any, so Brian Fairrington and I both drew them up very quickly Monday night. That’s my cartoon at the right, and here is Brian’s Facebook privacy cartoon. It is interesting that we both drew cartoons with two square arrow boxes; great minds think alike, I guess.

I have no idea if Businessweek will end up using either Facebook cartoon.

Our New, Updated msnbc.com Cartoons iPhone App

We just received word that Version 1.11 of our cool msnbc.com Cartoons iPhone app has been approved, and is available for FREE download right now at the iTunes store.

With version 1.11, users now have the ability to comment on all the cartoons directly from the iPhone app, without having to leave the app and come to our blogs.

Also, we know posting cartoons to Facebook was annoying the first time around, but we’ve fixed that; now it’s really easy to share our cartoons on your Facebook page directly from our app (and if you’re on Facebook, become a fan of our Cartoon Page).

Some other updates include a much faster interface, thanks to background cartoon loading. We’ve also made it easier to clear all images in the cache.

Apple Approves "Bobble Rep"

This just in:

Daryl,

I just thought I’d write to let you know I heard from Bobble Rep creator Ray Griggs just now that Apple reconsidered their rejection of our app and “Bobble Rep” is now approved and available in the App Store.

I’m glad Apple came to their senses and realized that this app is not only not derogatory or insulting to our congressional representatives and senators, it’s a beneficial program and a little fun as well.

It’s thanks to the support and attention of people like you that this happened. Thanks.

MADly,
Tom

Congratulations to Tom and Ray!  And thanks, Apple, for being reasonable about this one!

Ray Griggs, who produced and financed the Bobble Reps project asked me to post this reaction:

I would like thank all of the websites, news stations, Twitter, Facebook, internet bloggers, and email sources that showed their support of the Bobble Head Congressional App. I have received over 500 emails in the past two days and I tried to personally email each and every one of them to show my gratitude for their encouraging words. Many have also recently shown support of a documentary that I am currently working on. (www.iwantyourmoney.net)  Up until last night, this iPhone app seemed like it was on life support and hope was fading quickly. It was such relief to receive the phone call from Apple and hear that they had reversed their decision.

Personally, I still wish there were a better system for app. developers in the working stages to call in and speak with a representative. This would be an ideal way to ask: “This is what I’m doing. Do you foresee any problems?” before investing into an app. That doesn’t give you a guarantee, just a little peace of mind. One must remember that some developers get away with a couple of hundred dollars in development costs while others, such as myself, spend thousands. I was very blessed that the decision was reversed; sadly, I know that there may be many developers who have not had that good fortune.

We developers take a risk in trying to make our money back on iTunes site and we shouldn’t have to take that risk just to get approval to sell it. There is only one legal market in which to place one’s iPhone apps. When all is said and done, it is a privilege and not a right to be in this market. We must always keep this in mind. However, we should not be penalized for doing what we believe is right during the development stage. I still can’t help being a Mac fan, my last two projects “Super Capers” and “Lucifer the Movie” was done with Macs and Mac software. Depending on how this App. does,  I will consider and making future Apps. Over the past few days, I have realized that with all of the fans and support base available that there are other markets whose needs a developer can meet while taking less risk in the developmental stages. Android and Palm are such markets.  We are currently looking into these other markets with the intentions of promoting our future projects and films.

I would like to thank each person who contributed to voicing opinions on my behalf or encouraging me in this endeavor.  Thanks again!
