WINTER CHILL – Top Ten Cartoons of the Week!

Everyone loves a good weather cartoon!

Frigid temperatures, plies of snow, blistering wind chills – bad weather is one of the few things that impacts everyone, so it’s no surprise some of this week’s most-popular cartoons were about this week’s Arctic blast across the U.S.  Congrats to Jeff Koterba for his #1 weather cartoon.

We also had a number of popular cartoons about Donald Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucuses and his stranglehold on the Republican Party heading into the 2024 elections. The Trump cartoons won’t end with the New Hampshire primary up next, but cartoonists will probably lose interest in Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis if they don’t pull off an upset win.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

#2. John Darkow

ELECTION CHOICES: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

We’re about a month away from the first votes in the Republican primary being cast in Iowa, and it’s safe to say the country isn’t very excited about the likely choices for president.

Joe Biden, the incumbent, will likely face Donald Trump in a rematch of the 2020 election, which Biden won by more than 7 million votes. Our two most popular cartoons this week were about the lack of enthusiasm at the top of both presidential tickets. It’s going to be a long year.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

ELECTION’S END: TOP TEN CARTOONS OF THE WEEK

You might have heard; there was an election this week. While there is a good deal that remains uncertain (Georgia’s Senate race won’t be settled until next month), one thing that seems universal is our exhaustion over election ads and petty bickering from candidates.

Fortunately, we can all now safely turn on our TVs and not be afraid of eerie music playing behind black and white images of craven politicians attacking one another. We’ll just have to wait a bit longer for those lawn signs to be removed.

Here are our top ten most reprinted cartoons of the week:

If you haven’t noticed by all the political attack ads on television, it’s nearly Election Day! In just a couple of days Americans will be heading down to their local polling place to cast that vote in the 2022 midterms.

Elections are always a long slog for both voters and cartoonists, who just feel fatigued by the whole thing at this point. But at least they give us plenty to draw about.

Jeff Koterba Explains his Cartoon at our Exhibition

Jeff Koterba's "Big Lie Bat Cave" cartoon in the Donkeys and Elephants exhibition at the Salon in St Just le Martel, France. Donald Trump, elephants, bats, cave, election, denial, big lie,Republicans, Donald Trump
Jeff Koterba’s “Big Lie Bat Cave” cartoon in the Donkeys and Elephants exhibition at the Salon in St Just le Martel, France

We had two lovely exhibitions at the “International Center“, Press Cartoons museum in St Just le Martel, France this year. One of the shows was about Donkeys and Elephants.

Some people talk about cartooning being an international language, but it isn’t, a great example of cartoons that don’t cross borders are American donkey and elephant cartoons, which make no sense to foreign audiences. Our exhibit in France was curated by cartoons historian Olivier Auvray, who invited six cartoonists in our group to show their best donkey/elephant cartoons, which were presented with explanations –even with the explanations, the cartoons seemed seemed pretty difficult for the French fans to comprehend.

Here’s a video that Olivier took, of our cartoonist, Jeff Koterba, explaining his GOP Elephant Batcave cartoon to some French fans at the exhibition.

See CagleCartoonist Ed Wexler explaining his cartoon at our exhibition in France.

Midterms Approach: Top Ten Cartoons of the Week

We’re a little more than a week out from Election Day, and inflation remains one of the biggest issues of the midterms. Everything just seems to keep getting more and more expensive.

Of course, the election itself is a great topic for cartoons. Election deniers, unfit candidates, polarization – unfortunately there’s a lot of material for cartoonists to work with.

Top Ten Cartoons – New Green Deal

Last week, President Joe Biden announced he will pardon thousands of Americans federally convicted of marijuana possession. It didn’t take long for cartoonists to twist the acronym POTUS into fun riffs on pot and new green deals.

The upcoming midterm elections were also on the minds of cartoonists and editors last week. While cartoonists love the candidates and craziness that comes with national elections every couple of years, for most voters Nov. 8 can’t get here soon enough.

Our reader supported site, Cagle.com, still needs you!  Journalism is threatened with the pandemic that has shuttered newspaper advertisers. Some pundits predict that a large percentage of newspapers won’t survive the pandemic economic slump, and as newspapers sink, editorial cartoonists who depend on newspapers sink too, and along with them, our Cagle.com site.

Loyalty to Trump Gives Me a Headache

Here’s my new one, about loyalty to Trump headaches.

This one is based on an oldie from about 8 years ago, when Republicans were also bashing their heads for no good reason.  Things don’t change much.
